One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe right pull-behind mower depends on what you need to cut: choose a rough-cut machine for dense weeds and overgrowth, or a finish mower for maintained grass and a neater lawn appearance. These are different tools, not interchangeable options. The available manufacturer information supports two model examples—not a defensible “top five” ranking—because it does not provide consistent independent tests or comparable owner-reliability evidence.
Choose by the mowing job
Rough-cut mowing
A rough-cut mower is designed for overgrown land, dense weeds and rougher terrain. Swisher describes rough-cut models as having heavier blades and frames suited to uneven ground. Its RC11544CL is explicitly not intended to create a finish cut on lawns.
Finish-cut mowing
A finish mower is intended for maintained grass where a more even, lawn-like appearance matters. Swisher describes finish-cut mowers as suitable for large lawns and says its finish-cut units can attach to ATVs and other utility vehicles. Do not judge a finish mower by its ability to clear brush, or a rough-cut mower by the neatness of its lawn finish.
Two manufacturer-documented models to compare
The table summarizes the specifications stated on the manufacturers’ product pages. It is not a performance ranking; the models serve different mowing jobs.

| Model | Intended use | Cut and engine | Other stated features | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Swisher RC11544CL 44-inch Classic Rough-Cut Trailcutter | Overgrown land; Swisher identifies ATV/UTV towing. | 44-inch welded 11-gauge steel deck; 11.5 HP (344cc) Briggs & Stratton engine with recoil start; 3–7-inch single-point height adjustment. | Rear discharge, offset hitch that can tow to either side, remote operator control, two swinging blades and pneumatic tires. One-year warranty. | Swisher says the blades cut most stems up to 3 inches and states the mower is not intended for a lawn finish. The product page notes it cannot ship to California; check current restrictions and the current manual. |
| DR PRO XL60TF 60-inch Tow-Behind Finish Mower | Maintained grass; DR lists ATV or riding-mower towing. | 60-inch cut; 15.5 HP Briggs & Stratton engine; electric start. | DR states a mowing rate of up to 2.75 acres per hour. | The acreage-per-hour figure is the manufacturer’s estimate, not an independently verified field-test result. Confirm current availability, hitch fit, terrain limits and towing requirements in DR’s current manual. |
Check ATV fit before choosing a mower
A manufacturer listing ATV towing does not establish that every ATV can safely tow that mower. Compatibility depends on the specific ATV, mower and operating conditions. Before buying, check the ATV owner’s manual and the mower’s current manual, and verify:
- Rated towing capacity: Confirm the ATV is approved to tow the mower and any relevant load under the conditions you expect to encounter.
- Hitch type and geometry: Match the mower’s hitch to the ATV’s hitch, including any required coupler or kit. For an offset hitch, check that the mower can track where you need it without interfering with the ATV.
- Controls and access: Understand how the mower is started, stopped and adjusted from the operator’s position; the Swisher model lists remote operator control, while DR lists electric start.
- Terrain and vegetation: Compare the mower’s intended use and manual limits with your ground, slopes, obstacles and vegetation. A stem-cutting claim is not a guarantee for every plant or site condition.
Compare the details that affect ownership
Cutting width and horsepower alone do not determine which mower is the better choice. A responsible comparison within the same mower category should also cover:
Rank #2
- ROUGH & TOUGH: The Acreage can clear tall grass, thick brush and saplings up to 3" thick in a single 44” wide pass. Two pivoting break-away blades are designed to tackle the tough stuff, but swing out of the way when encountering rocks or stumps, protecting the blades and drive system.
- ADJUSTABLE OFFSET MOWING: Fully offset the mower behind the tow vehicle up to 4’ in either direction for mowing trails or ditch slopes, and under tree limbs. Tool-less cutting height adjustment allows for changing the cutting height on the fly from 3.5" to 7.5".
- TRUSTED POWER: Maintain overgrown properties with an always reliable 17.5hp Briggs & Stratton engine. Its Advanced Debris Management System keeps the engine clean by deflecting and ejecting grass and debris, making for a longer engine life.
- ELECTRIC START: Engine features a keyed electric start with included battery, providing quick, reliable ignition without the need for manual pull-starting.
- EASY TO OPERATE: Engage the blades with a simple pull of a lever and disengage from the convenience of your seat by pulling on the included rope.
- Cutting-height range and adjustment method.
- Hitch type, offset and any model-specific accessory requirements.
- Operator controls, starting system, discharge design and wheel or tire setup.
- Vegetation and terrain limits stated by the manufacturer.
- Warranty terms, replacement blades and service-part availability.
- Regional shipping restrictions and current product availability.
Manufacturer productivity and cutting-capacity statements are claims about the product, not independent test results. The available material does not establish comparable field performance, long-term reliability or owner-service outcomes for these models, so it cannot support a meaningful overall winner or a verified five-model ranking.
