The 2025 REAL SIMPLE Home offers nine practical ideas for making rooms feel more cohesive and considered: match furniture to a room’s shape, connect art with color, layer pattern and texture, and use architectural details to add character. The examples come from two Lower Manhattan apartments—a penthouse and an annex—in the eighth annual REAL SIMPLE Home, featured by Real Simple writer Abby Fribush on September 17, 2025. 1. Echo the room’s shape with furniture
In the penthouse living room, New York City home stager Jason Saft chose a rounded coffee table, rug, and sofa to follow the room’s curved walls. He said square and rectangular pieces would interrupt the space’s natural flow.
When choosing a prominent piece, notice the lines already present: a curved wall, bay window, or rounded opening may call for softer shapes nearby. This doesn’t mean every item must match the architecture. A single curved table or rug can reinforce the room’s geometry without making the space feel overly coordinated.
2. Give a gallery wall a shared color thread
Saft’s gallery wall brought together art he found dynamic while keeping to a similar palette. The useful balance is variety in the artwork and consistency in one visual element, such as color.

Try combining different sizes or styles, then look for a few colors that recur across the pieces. Lay the arrangement out before hanging it, and step back to check whether the shared palette helps the collection read as a whole.
3. Pair bold color with wall texture
In the penthouse primary bedroom, New York City designer Alvin Wayne set jewel-toned bedding against earth-toned plaster. He noted that textured walls can add depth and interest without relying entirely on a bold wall color.
For a similar effect, decide which layer should provide the strongest color—the wall, bedding, or another major surface—and let texture add dimension elsewhere. Plaster is the example in the feature; the broader idea is to consider how surface variation can make a room feel richer alongside color.

4. Layer mirrors and frames over wallpaper
In the penthouse office, Los Angeles designer Mandy Cheng alternated framed mirrors with identical empty frames against toile wallpaper. The arrangement created a checkerboard effect, with some wallpaper initially appearing like a reflection.
This look depends on a deliberate visual illusion: Cheng said viewers are not meant to know at first glance what is a reflection and what is wallpaper showing through. Repeating the same frame style helps the alternating elements feel intentional. Because mirrors, frames, and patterned wallpaper all compete for attention, consider testing the arrangement on a small wall area before committing to a full installation.
5. Mix geometric patterns with a sense of balance
Chicago designer Candace Griffin combined checkered wallpaper, striped wainscoting and sheets, and geometric bedding and art in the kids’ room. The feature describes the result as playful while still tasteful for adults.

To borrow the idea, mix patterns with different visual rhythms rather than choosing several that all dominate in the same way. A check, a stripe, and a smaller-scale geometric can each contribute something distinct. Repeat a few colors across the patterns to keep the combination connected.
6. Let wallpaper inform furniture choices
In the penthouse den and game room, Toronto designer Alexandra Gater drew on the wallpaper’s warm, antique-inspired colors when selecting furniture. Plush velvet pieces and rich wood tables extended that palette through the room.

Wallpaper can be more than a backdrop: use its colors as one reference when choosing upholstery, wood tones, or other finishes. You don’t have to match every color exactly. Carrying a few tones into furniture and materials can make the room feel related without turning it into a single-color scheme.

7. Combine pieces from different eras and places
Drew Michael Scott of Lone Fox Home assembled the annex room with pieces from different traditions, including a French sideboard, Danish chairs, and a German daybed. He said the combination gave the room an almost worldly feel.
The example suggests that a collected room need not rely on a matched furniture set. When mixing pieces, look for a relationship that can tie them together—such as material, shape, color, or scale—so the contrast feels chosen rather than accidental.

Molding changes the visual structure of a room, so consider how its placement relates to doors, windows, cabinets, and ceiling height. Fletchall’s project is an example rather than a set of installation instructions; the feature mentions a related DIY but does not provide its steps. For built-ins or other detailed work, plan the layout and finish before installation.
9. Layer texture for a room that feels established
In the annex bedroom, Bay Area DIYer Valeria Jacobs combined millwork, texture, and pattern in an earthy palette of burnt orange, soft green, and warm cream drawn from nearby buildings. She identified grasscloth wallpaper as the key material that made the room feel richer and more established.
Grasscloth is one way to add visible texture, while millwork and patterned textiles contribute other layers. When combining them, decide which surface should lead and keep the palette connected so the room has depth without every finish demanding equal attention.
How to adapt the ideas to your own room
The apartments in the feature are specific design projects, not proof that a treatment will suit every room. Use these questions to shape your choices:
