The options below reflect what NBC Select and Bob Vila report, rather than a combined head-to-head ranking. Bob Vila’s observations come from its own short tests; they do not establish how long a seal will last in months of storage.

NBC Select’s guide, updated September 30, 2026, says bulky sweaters and fluffy blankets can shrink “down to a quarter of their original size — if not smaller” with the right bag. Treat that as a general description, not a result guaranteed for every item or product.
How to choose the right bag
Match the bag to the item and the storage space
Start with the contents: a jumbo bag may suit a comforter, while smaller clothing loads may be easier to manage in smaller bags. Bob Vila describes common sizes from small through jumbo and gives 40-by-30-inch jumbo examples; dimensions vary by manufacturer. Measure both the uncompressed item and the shelf, closet, or under-bed space where the filled bag will go. A bag that holds the bedding may still be too bulky for its intended storage spot.

Check how air is removed
Some bags include a hand pump; some accept a household vacuum hose. Compatibility is product-specific, so check the instructions and valve design rather than assuming any pump will work. NBC Select advises checking whether a hand pump is required. The Space Bag Vac Cube manual describes household-vacuum use for that model only; it is not evidence that every Space Bag or other brand works the same way. Bob Vila found a vacuum cleaner faster than a hand pump in its described tests.
Inspect the closure and valve design
NBC Select quotes expert advice to look for double-zip or triple-seal closures. After filling, the zipper must be fully closed and the valve capped according to the product instructions. A multi-seal feature is worth comparing, but the label alone does not guarantee a lasting seal.

Consider handling and material
Bob Vila treats bag strength, leak-resistant seals, and adequate dimensions as selection criteria. Its testers described the tested BoxLegend bags as thick and durable; that observation applies to those bags in that test, not to all bags or later versions. The same publisher found sealing clips awkward on some tested sets and preferred closing the zipper with fingers, a reminder that closure ergonomics can differ by product.
How to pack and store items
- Check care guidance. Follow the item’s care label or manufacturer’s storage advice, especially for valuable clothing and bedding.
- Choose a bag with room. Don’t force an item into a bag that is too small. Leave the zipper area clear so fabric does not obstruct closure.
- Close the zipper completely. Follow the bag’s instructions for its zipper or sealing clip, then check the closure from end to end.
- Remove air using a compatible method. Use the included hand pump or a vacuum hose only if the product supports it; follow its instructions for the valve.
- Cap the valve and place the bag carefully. Store it where its final dimensions fit, without putting sharp or heavy objects against the bag.
Textile vacuum bags use a zipper and valve to remove air. They are different from food vacuum-sealer bags, which use a machine to extract air and heat-seal the opening; food bags are not a substitute for clothing and bedding bags.

Are vacuum bags suitable for every textile?
No. Bob Vila cautions against keeping natural-fiber items such as wool and down compressed for several months because they may not regain their original shape after prolonged compression. It also warns that pressure can leave permanent creases or wrinkles in leather and suede. Check the care label or ask the maker before compressing valuable items. A short period of compression during a move is a different situation from long-term storage, but suitability depends on the item.
Salvador Villarreal, owner of VIP Cleaners in San Diego, told NBC Select: “The main benefits are space and protection. Removing the air significantly reduces the volume of bulky items, and the sealed bag keeps out dust, moisture, odors, and moths,” The statement is expert guidance, not a guarantee that every bag blocks every contaminant in every storage condition.

How long do vacuum storage bags stay compressed?
It depends on the bag, closure, valve, how carefully it is sealed, and storage conditions. Bob Vila’s reported observations covered three to five days: its BoxLegend test bag held its seal for five days, and other tested bags held for three to five days depending on the filled bag. Those short observations do not establish performance over months or provide a long-term guarantee. Recheck a bag during storage if maintaining compression matters.
