Yes, different wood tones can work together—and they do not have to match exactly. Start with a prominent finish such as flooring or cabinetry, identify its undertone, then bring in related or deliberately contrasting woods. Repeating secondary tones helps the mix feel intentional; a rug can soften a transition that feels too stark.
1. Start with the largest or most fixed wood surface
Look first at what is hardest to change or takes up the most visual space: floors, cabinetry, or substantial built-ins. Treat that finish as the room’s anchor, then choose furniture and smaller accents in relation to it. This gives you a clear starting point instead of trying to coordinate every piece with every other piece. Studio McGee and Living Spaces both discuss dominant tones as a useful foundation.

2. Compare undertones separately from lightness
A wood can be light or dark and still have a warm, cool, or relatively neutral cast. Those are separate qualities: two woods do not need to be equally light to relate, and two similarly dark woods can look mismatched if their undertones clash. Compare samples or pieces in the same room light, alongside the anchor finish. Similar undertones are one way to connect different woods, according to Tarkett, Sherwin-Williams, and Living Spaces.
3. Choose a close palette or a clear contrast
Once you know the anchor’s undertone, decide what relationship you want. Woods close in tone can create a quieter, more blended effect. A clear light-dark difference can add depth, especially when the undertones still feel compatible. The aim is a deliberate relationship, not an exact match: MyDomaine and Living Spaces describe contrast as a way to add visual interest.

4. Repeat a secondary wood tone
If a table or chair introduces a noticeably different wood, echo that tone elsewhere—in another furniture piece or a smaller decor detail. The repetition helps the secondary finish read as part of the room’s palette rather than an isolated mismatch. Room & Board recommends using each wood at least twice in furniture or decor; treat that as its design suggestion, not a universal rule. Room & Board also recommends considering shared undertones.
5. Include grain and finish in the overall impression
Color is only one part of how a wood finish reads. Notice the grain and the finish’s overall appearance as you compare pieces, then consider whether the combination looks connected or intentionally varied beside your anchor. MyDomaine identifies contrast and repeated shades as ways to create depth and continuity, but there is no single technical formula for matching grain across different woods. MyDomaine’s guidance is best used as a visual cue, not a requirement that every grain pattern match.

6. Add a rug when the transition feels abrupt
If a light wood furniture piece against a dark wood floor feels too stark, a rug between them can soften the visual change. It is an optional buffer, not something every mixed-wood room needs. Tarkett suggests this approach for easing contrast between light wood furniture and dark flooring. Tarkett’s interior design tips discuss both undertones and rugs as tools for working with mixed woods.
A quick way to assess a combination
- Anchor: Which wood surface is largest or most difficult to change?
- Undertone: Do the woods have compatible warm, cool, or neutral casts?
- Contrast: Is the difference in lightness subtle or clearly intentional?
- Repetition: Does a secondary wood appear elsewhere in the room?
- Transition: Would a rug help if furniture and flooring feel too far apart visually?
These are practical design checks, not a measured scoring system. If a combination feels off, change one relationship at a time: test a closer undertone, make the contrast more distinct, repeat the secondary wood, or try a rug between the pieces.
