You can make a drainage ditch look like a deliberate part of the landscape by planting for its wet-to-dry conditions while preserving the route that carries runoff. Start by observing how water moves, then choose locally suitable plants and place them by moisture level. A ditch that conveys water is a planted swale; it is not automatically a rain garden, which is designed to hold runoff temporarily.
1. Watch the water before you plant
After rain, note where runoff enters the ditch, how quickly it travels, where it slows, and whether water cuts into the soil. Keep the channel’s purpose clear: a swale is a shallow planted depression that guides water from one point to another. A rain garden is designed to temporarily hold runoff while it infiltrates, evaporates, or is taken up by plants. The distinction matters because filling or reshaping a conveyance route as though it were a rain garden can interfere with drainage. Virginia Cooperative Extension explains the rain-garden function; Illinois Extension discusses rain gardens and bioswales.

2. Choose plants for your region and site
Select plants suited to your local climate, soil, sun exposure, and the range of moisture in the ditch. They should tolerate wet spells as well as dry periods, and should not be invasive. As Virginia Cooperative Extension puts it, “Choose plants tolerant of both occasional flooding as well as dry periods.” Check plant choices with your local extension service or a knowledgeable native-plant nursery; there is no universally suitable palette for every ditch. Virginia Cooperative Extension’s plant guidance was last reviewed in January 2024.

3. Plant in moisture zones
Use the ditch’s natural moisture pattern to guide placement rather than distributing plants evenly. The bottom generally stays wettest, the sides experience intermediate conditions, and the upper edge is usually drier. That pattern can help plants establish and makes the planting look intentional.

- EASYFLEX DECORATIVE NO-DIG LANDSCAPE EDGING: Get a beautifully landscaped yard without all the work of a dig-in lawn edging; simple installation without trenches or shovels; color may vary due to the unique manufacturing process.
- DO-IT-YOURSELF: Place the edging around raised flower beds, trees, and gardens and use a rubber mallet to drive the spikes into the tabs for a secure, long-lasting border
- FIT ANY SHAPE GARDEN DESIGN: EasyFlex garden edging is rigid enough to make straight sections, and has built-in spines that can bend to make curves and tree rings, or cut to make corners
- DURABLE & LOW MAINTENANCE: the strong plastic lawn edging can withstand string trimmers, temperature fluctuations and seasonal ground movement; requires minimal annual maintenance
- KIT INCLUDES: (12) 2.5-inch-tall x 15-inch-wide Stone-Look edging pieces and (24) 8-inch spiral anchoring spikes to complete a 15-foot installation
- Bottom: Choose plants that tolerate longer wet periods. USDA NRCS recommends wet-tolerant sedges and rushes for the center of a rain garden; the same moisture-zoning idea can inform a swale planting, but the exact species must suit your region.
- Sides: Use plants able to handle occasional standing water as well as periods when the soil dries.
- Upper edge: Choose plants that prefer drier conditions, such as suitable shrubs or perennials.
USDA NRCS’s homeowner guide describes this zoning for rain gardens and includes California-oriented plant examples, so confirm species locally before using them elsewhere.
4. Layer flowers and foliage for color
Build color around plants that fit the site, rather than choosing a flower first and forcing it into the wrong conditions. Where appropriate for the local climate and soil, Florida guidance offers two examples: blue flag iris (Iris virginica) has lavender-blue spring flowers and is listed at 4 to 7 feet tall and 1 to 3 feet wide; swamp sunflower (Helianthus angustifolius) has yellow fall flowers. Those dimensions and recommendations come from Florida guidance, not a universal planting prescription. UF/IFAS describes these rain-garden plants.

Virginia Cooperative Extension’s guidance discusses arranging plants by height.

If water runs forcefully through the ditch or soil is washing away, treat stabilization as a drainage issue—not as a decorative upgrade. University of Maine Cooperative Extension describes gently sloped, grass-lined swales for directing water and advises considering a rock-lined ditch for heavy flows. Its guidance also describes landscape fabric as a way to help prevent erosion and recommends checking that the bottom is not eroding. These are regional recommendations; site conditions and local requirements may call for a different approach. Read the University of Maine guidance on swales and rain gardens.

Inspect the channel after storms for newly exposed soil, displaced stone, or a flow path obstructed by debris or plant growth. If the ditch is steep, carries concentrated runoff, or is eroding repeatedly, get site-specific advice before changing its shape or lining it.

New plantings need attention while roots become established. USDA NRCS recommends weeding and irrigation during the first couple of months, followed by pruning and mulching as needed; extra irrigation may be required in drought years. Site-appropriate native vegetation can reduce fertilizer, pesticide, water, and maintenance needs, but it still requires ordinary landscape care. The USDA NRCS homeowner guide covers establishment and maintenance.

After planting, check the ditch after rainfall to catch erosion or a blocked flow route early. If your project is actually a rain garden rather than a conveyance swale, use rain-garden guidance for its drainage expectations: University of Maryland Extension says a well-designed rain garden should drain within 24 to 48 hours. That benchmark does not apply to every ditch, since a swale is meant to convey water. University of Maryland Extension’s rain-garden guidance was updated May 15, 2025.
