6 Things to Know Before Buying an Induction Hob

Before buying an induction hob, check cookware compatibility, installation requirements, zone layout, power sharing and the model’s specific care and safety guidance.

Before you buy an induction hob, check whether your pans will work, whether the appliance fits your worktop and electrical supply, and how its zones share power. Those practical details can matter more than headline features—and they vary by model. Here are six checks that can prevent costly surprises.

1. Check your existing pans before buying a new set

Induction heats suitable cookware through a magnetic field, so the pan’s base must be compatible. Try a magnet against the underside: if it sticks firmly, the pan is a promising candidate. It is only a screening test, though; check the hob’s manual for minimum and maximum pan-base dimensions, and confirm that each pan suits the zone you plan to use.

Cast iron, enamelled steel and steel cookware generally work. Some stainless-steel pans do too, but stainless steel is not automatically induction-compatible. Ordinary aluminium, copper, glass and ceramic cookware will not work directly unless it has a compatible magnetic base or is used with an appropriate accessory. Bosch UK advises: “Do not heat empty cookware and do not use cookware with a thin base.” Electrolux also notes that cookware diameter affects efficiency and recommends checking the manual for size limits. Bosch UK cookware guidance; Electrolux cookware guidance.

2. Confirm the hob fits your worktop and electrical supply

A hob that looks like a straightforward replacement may need more than a matching cutout. Before ordering, measure the existing worktop opening and compare it with the exact model’s installation drawing. Check required clearances, ventilation and the space below the hob, as well as the electrical supply and circuit capacity. Installation requirements differ by model and market, so a voltage or amperage quoted for one appliance should not be assumed to apply to another.

If you are replacing a gas hob, the gas connection may need to be capped and a suitable electrical connection installed. Whirlpool advises getting professional help for this transition. Confirm the work required with a qualified installer before buying, particularly if the kitchen’s wiring or supply capacity is uncertain. Whirlpool’s induction cooktop installation guidance; Bosch UK installation information.

3. Match the zone layout to the pans you actually use

Count and position cooking zones with your regular cookware in mind: a large frying pan, stockpot or roasting pan may not suit the zones you use most. Compare each zone’s size with the pan base, and look for a bridging or flexible-zone feature if you often cook with long or oversized cookware. Whether zones can combine, and how that feature works, depends on the model.

Duxtop Portable Induction Cooktop, Countertop Burner 1800W Silver 9600LS
  • PORTABLE INDUCTION BURNER: Duxtop induction cooktop uses 110/120 V 15 amp electrical outlet–standard in all North American homes. ETL listed and built to North American electrical standards. It is lightweight and compact for easy handling and storage
  • Choose from 20 preset power levels (100 to 1800 W) and 20 preset temperature level settings (100 °F to 460 °F). With an 83% energy efficiency, induction burner is more efficient than traditional gas or electric stoves
  • DIGITAL LCD SENSOR: Touch control panel: child safety lock keeps the cooking and timer settings from being accidentally changed once they have been set; fast boil button; keep warm button (for 1-30 minutes at 140 °F); up to 10-hour timer button
  • Induction stoves rely on cookware to heat, so it’s essential to choose magnetic bottom cookware with a minimum diameter of 5 inches. Auto-pan detection will shut off automatically after 60 seconds if no cookware, or the incorrect cookware is detected
  • Although induction itself is a noiseless process, there may be high pitched sounds from the cookware due to multiple layers of metals sandwiched together. Please allow the induction cooker to cool down before cleaning

Also check power management. Some hobs redistribute available power when several zones are running; increasing one zone can reduce the power available to another. Gorenje describes this behavior for its power-management system, but it is not a universal specification. Look in the chosen hob’s manual for its connected load and any limits on simultaneous use. Gorenje user manual.

4. Treat boost as a model-specific, temporary feature

Boost can provide extra power for a limited task, such as bringing water to a boil, but the name does not guarantee the same performance or behavior on every zone or hob. Check the selected model’s manual for which zones support boost, how it affects other zones, and whether it has a time or temperature limit.

5. The glass can still get hot, and cleaning has rules

Induction heats the cookware directly, but heat from the pan can warm the glass beneath or around it. Do not assume the surface is instantly cool when cooking stops. Bosch describes residual-heat indicators and automatic shutoff features; check the chosen appliance’s manual to understand its warnings and protections.

6. Expect operating sounds, and check device guidance if relevant

A hum or buzz during operation can be normal: Samsung says induction cooktops may make these sounds while cooking. The sound can be surprising if you expect the appliance to be silent, so consult the selected model’s manual if you are unsure whether a particular noise is expected.
