Here, “trees” includes shrubs and small trees commonly sold and trained as standards. Bay has especially clear support for both pot growing and shaping; olive is better treated as a sculptural small tree unless you have confirmed it suits the formal shape you want.
Which trees make good potted topiary?
These six are practical options, not the only possible choices. The best fit depends on the shape, the space available for roots, local winter conditions and how often you are willing to prune. In a container, favour compact or relatively slow-growing plants: vigorous trees can become leggy when their roots are restricted. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) names box, yew, privet and holly among container topiary options, while extension guidance specifically supports bay for pots and shaping. The RHS recommends olives for pots because they can be sheltered in winter, but its container guidance does not establish olive as a formal clipped-topiary choice.
| Plant | Evergreen appearance | Clipping and growth considerations | Container and winter considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Box (Buxus) | Evergreen | Small leaves and dense growth make it a classic for close clipping. Box blight and box tree caterpillar are concerns. | Named by the RHS as a container topiary specimen. Consider alternatives if those pests or diseases are a concern. |
| Yew (Taxus) | Evergreen | Clips neatly and can regrow from old wood. Avoid waterlogged conditions; the RHS warns that specimens can be badly affected by Phytophthora root rot. | Named by the RHS as a container topiary specimen. Choose a well-drained position and potting setup. |
| Bay laurel (Laurus nobilis) | Evergreen | Adapts well to pruning and shaping and grows relatively slowly; leaves can also be harvested for cooking. | Does well in containers. It is frost-sensitive in colder regions; bring it indoors before frost where needed. |
| Privet (Ligustrum) | Often evergreen or semi-evergreen, depending on species and climate | Several species clip well once established and tolerate most soils and some shade. New growth may be damaged by frost. | Named by the RHS as a container topiary specimen. Choose a species suited to your local conditions. |
| Holly (Ilex) | Many commonly grown hollies are evergreen | Used as a formal-garden alternative to box and named among RHS container topiary choices. Suitability varies by species and cultivar. | Confirm the selected holly’s mature size and local growing requirements before choosing a pot. |
| Olive (Olea europaea) | Evergreen in suitable conditions | Can make a sculptural or trained small tree. The RHS pot advice does not specifically establish it as a clipped formal-topiary species. | The RHS considers olives suitable for pots because tender trees can be moved to frost-free shelter over winter. Check local climate and pruning needs. |
Box: the close-clipped classic
Box is the natural choice for small, crisp shapes, thanks to its small leaves and tolerance of tight clipping. Its main drawback is the risk of box blight and box tree caterpillar. If you would rather avoid those particular problems, yew, privet or holly may be alternatives, though each has its own growing requirements.
Yew: for defined shapes and recovery from old wood
Yew is another classic that clips neatly and can regrow from old wood, giving it flexibility if a specimen needs reshaping. Drainage matters: do not let the compost stay waterlogged, as the RHS warns of Phytophthora root rot in yew specimens.

Bay laurel: a useful pot plant that can be shaped
Bay has unusually direct support for this use: University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension says it adapts well to pruning and shaping and can be grown as topiary or as a standard. Its relatively slow growth helps in a pot, and the leaves are useful in the kitchen. In colder regions, University of Illinois Extension advises bringing bay indoors before frost.
Privet: adaptable, with frost-sensitive new growth
The RHS lists privet among container topiary specimens. Several privet species clip well once established and tolerate a range of soils and some shade, but do not assume all are interchangeable: check the species’ mature size and whether it suits your local climate. Frost can damage new growth.

Holly: choose the species, not just the name
Holly is an RHS-listed container topiary option and a formal-garden alternative to box. “Holly” covers different species and cultivars, so check growth habit, mature size and local growing conditions before committing to a container and a particular shape.
Olive: best approached as a sculptural tree
Olive is a tender tree that the RHS considers well suited to pots because the container can be moved to a frost-free place for winter. That makes it a good candidate for a sculptural, trained form in a sheltered setting. Do not assume it will take tight, formal clipping as reliably as box or yew: confirm the pruning approach for your chosen plant and the shape you want.

How to choose a tree and pot for your space
- Start with the intended shape. Small, tightly defined forms favour fine foliage and plants known to tolerate clipping. A looser, sculptural form gives more scope to use a small tree such as olive.
- Check mature size and growth habit. Avoid plants that are too vigorous or large for restricted root space; they can become leggy. Confirm the selected species or cultivar’s requirements with a local nursery or gardening authority.
- Plan for winter before you buy. Tender plants need an appropriate frost-free shelter in climates where winter temperatures are unsuitable. A heavy container may be harder to move, so account for this when selecting both plant and pot.
- Use a pot with ample drainage holes. Increase pot size in stages as the plant grows. The RHS suggests a final container of about 45 cm (18 in) minimum, and says most trees do well in loam-based compost.
- Make the container stable. Choose a pot large enough for the tree and heavy enough, or weighted, to resist wind and tipping.
How to care for potted topiary
Water and drainage
Container trees dry out faster than trees in the ground. Keep the compost moist but not waterlogged, and check it regularly even in winter. A pot’s drainage holes are essential: persistent wetness is particularly unsuitable for yew.
Trim to the plant’s growth rate
The RHS recommends trimming topiary annually in early or late summer; faster-growing plants may need two or more trims each season. Use topiary shears or hedge cutters, and avoid treating one calendar schedule as right for every species and climate. The aim is to maintain the intended outline without cutting beyond what the plant can readily replace.

Protect against frost and wind
Match winter care to the species and local climate. Move tender plants such as olive to frost-free shelter where necessary; bring bay indoors before frost in colder regions. Place containers where they are not exposed to damaging winds, and make sure the pot cannot tip as the plant grows.
