The 65 ideas below are prompts to mix and match—not a claim that every variation has been independently tested. Start with evenly dried, cooled slices, then choose an attachment method suited to the project.
How to dry citrus slices for Christmas decorations
Oranges are a classic, but lemons, limes, and grapefruit also work. For even drying, Clemson University Extension recommends cutting citrus into slices about 1/8 inch thick, blotting away surface moisture, and arranging them with space between each slice on parchment-lined trays.
Oven method
- Heat the oven to 175°F, or use its lowest setting if it is no higher than 200°F.
- Arrange blotted slices in a single layer on parchment-lined trays.
- Dry for an estimated 3–5 hours, turning the slices every 30 minutes. Timing varies with slice thickness and appliance.
- Cool the slices on a wire rack. Check for soft or sticky spots and let them air-dry longer if needed.
These are Clemson Extension’s directions and time estimates, not a guarantee for every oven. Its guide to drying oranges for holiday decorations also gives a dehydrator option: 130°F for about 12–14 hours, turning slices hourly. Clemson notes that dehydrator-dried slices tend to be more uniform and less likely to burn.
A separate oven approach for garlands
The National Park Service’s Fort Vancouver craft instructions use a hotter, garland-specific method: slice citrus 1/8–1/4 inch thick and bake at 250°F for 1½ hours, flip, then bake for another 1½ hours, watching for browning. The NPS gives about 3–4 hours as the total time. It says slices need not be completely dry before stringing and can continue drying on the garland. This differs from Clemson’s lower-temperature method, so follow one set of directions rather than combining them. See Christmas Crafts From Fort Vancouver.

Choose the right attachment for each decoration
Match the fastening method to where the slices will go. These practical pairings draw on the materials used in the cited craft instructions:
- Individual ornaments: use a ribbon or twine loop.
- Garlands: string slices on twine or thread, leaving enough space to drape them without crowding.
- Wreaths and greenery: use florist wire to secure slices where you want them.
- Gift and table accents: use a short twine tie or ribbon so the slice can be removed easily.
For storage, Clemson Extension advises putting fully cooled, dry slices in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. It says properly stored slices can last several years; actual longevity depends on how completely they dried and the storage conditions. Keep decorative slices separate from food. If you intend to use citrus in a drink or eat it, Farmers’ Almanac advises using clean, edible fruit and handling that batch as food; its article is Dried Fruit Decorations: How to Dry Citrus for Gifts.
