Cherry tomatoes and other small-fruited tomatoes have the clearest support; peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, beans, and strawberries are possibilities to test, not guaranteed successes. The distinction matters: growing a crop in a container does not prove it will thrive with its roots above and its stems hanging down.
Which plants are suitable for upside-down growing?
Colorado State University PlantTalk says, “Cherry tomatoes and other small-fruited tomatoes are better suited for upside down growing.” Its direct advice is about tomatoes; the other crops below are lower-confidence candidates based on container-growing guidance and secondary suggestions, rather than proven upside-down recommendations.
| Plant | How strong is the case for inversion? | Practical starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Cherry and other small-fruited tomatoes | Strongest: Colorado State University PlantTalk directly discusses upside-down tomatoes and favors small-fruited types. | Try a compact variety in a planter with enough root volume, secure support, good light, and manageable watering. |
| Peppers | Candidate: Wisconsin and Maryland Extension include peppers among container crops; Gardening Know How mentions smaller peppers as upside-down possibilities. | Use a compact pepper and treat inversion as an experiment. |
| Cucumbers | Candidate: extension sources list cucumbers as container crops, and Wisconsin notes that vining crops need suitable support or hanging varieties. A secondary source mentions cucumbers for upside-down growing. | Try only with a suitable support plan; a container recommendation does not establish that an inverted planter will produce a good harvest. |
| Eggplant | Candidate: Wisconsin and Maryland Extension list eggplant for containers, while a secondary source suggests it for inversion. | Choose a compact plant and a sturdy setup; consider the result a trial. |
| Beans | Candidate: Maryland Extension and NC State provide container guidance for beans. The secondary upside-down source mentions peas, not beans, so that is not proof for this crop. | Experiment only if the planter and plant are manageable; do not assume pea suggestions apply to beans. |
| Strawberries | Possible hanging-container option, but inversion evidence is limited. NC State provides ordinary container guidance, and a secondary source lists strawberries as a possibility. | A hanging basket or strawberry pot is not automatically equivalent to planting through the bottom of an inverted planter. |
How to choose a planter and mount it safely
Before planting, assess the full setup rather than relying on the planter’s empty weight or a generic product description.
- Pick a compact plant. Small-fruited tomatoes have the strongest direct support. For container crops generally, Wisconsin and Maryland Extension recommend looking for determinate, dwarf, bush, or compact varieties.
- Check the loaded weight and mounting. Colorado State PlantTalk warns that an upside-down planter filled with damp soil and a large tomato plant can weigh 50 pounds. That is an illustrative caution, not the expected weight of every planter. Check the filled load for your own container and use sound support appropriate to the mounting surface.
- Allow enough room for roots. Colorado State warns that a small rooting volume cannot support a large tomato plant. Wisconsin recommends at least five gallons and 12–18 inches of depth for larger container crops, including tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and cucumbers. NC State lists five gallons for tomatoes and eggplant, two gallons for peppers, and an eight-inch-deep container for strawberries. These are ordinary container recommendations, not validated dimensions for an inverted planter.
- Provide drainage and water access. Make sure excess water can escape and that you can water without difficulty. Colorado State reports that thin, breathable plastic planters dried so quickly in the conditions described that watering once a day was not enough. Wisconsin says fruiting container crops may need daily watering as they mature and temperatures rise; Maryland notes that some containers need daily water in hot, dry weather. Actual frequency depends on the planter, weather, and plant size.
- Account for sun and wind. Maryland Extension’s 2026 guidance calls for 6–8 hours of direct sun for warm-season container crops such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant. Wisconsin Extension’s 2021 general container guidance recommends at least six hours. Colorado State also cautions that a deck, building, tree, or the planter itself can create shade, while wind can pull or break hanging tomato stems.
When is upside-down growing worth trying?
It makes most sense when an upright plant is impractical because of space or sunlight. Colorado State PlantTalk says, “Upside down planters are an option if you can’t grow tomatoes right side up for reasons of space or sunlight.” If those constraints do not apply, the same source says upright tomato growing is easier. Container-grown tomatoes already avoid some ground-related issues sometimes presented as benefits of inversion, so do not assume turning a plant upside down prevents disease or guarantees a better harvest.

For a first attempt, start with a small-fruited tomato, then judge the setup by its actual light, root space, stability, wind exposure, and watering demands. Treat the other five crops as experiments: the available guidance supports growing them in containers, but does not establish comparative upside-down yields or reliable success rates.
