You can grow lettuce, spinach, kale, basil, mint, and mizuna without soil using hydroponics. Their roots still need water, nutrients, and oxygen; some systems also use a medium to support the plant. The six are proven examples, not a guarantee that every crop will suit every home setup.
What “growing without soil” means
Hydroponics replaces soil with a water-based nutrient solution. The water is mixed with fertilizer that supplies essential plant nutrients. A growing medium such as rockwool, clay pellets, or coco coir may still hold the roots or support the plant, even though soil is absent. University of Illinois Extension, University of New Hampshire Extension, and the USDA National Agricultural Library describe soilless growing in these terms.

Six plants to try
UF/IFAS Extension lists the first five plants below as crops suitable for the passive Kratky method. NASA’s Veggie research system has grown mizuna mustard. These examples establish that the plants can be grown hydroponically; they are not a ranking or a promise of success in every kit, room, or season.

Lettuce is a leafy green specifically recommended for Kratky growing, making it a practical example for a first soilless crop. Your results still depend on light, nutrient balance, and the container and system you use.

2. Spinach
UF/IFAS includes spinach among leafy greens that work well with Kratky hydroponics. Match the setup’s light and nutrient management to the crop rather than assuming every indoor system will perform the same way.
3. Kale
Kale appears on UF/IFAS’s Kratky crop list and is also among the leafy greens Illinois Extension recommends for indoor beginners.

4. Basil
Basil is one of the herbs UF/IFAS names as suitable for the Kratky method. It is a hydroponic option, but that does not mean every room provides enough natural light year-round.
5. Mint
Mint is also included in UF/IFAS’s Kratky list. The cited guidance establishes hydroponic feasibility; it does not specify a universal container size or recommend one cultivar for every setup.

6. Mizuna mustard
NASA records mizuna mustard among crops grown in Veggie plant experiments aboard the International Space Station. That is evidence of use in a research system, not proof that a home kit duplicates NASA’s growing conditions. NASA’s Station Science 101: Plant Research describes the program.
How a simple Kratky setup works
Kratky is a passive hydroponic method: it does not need a pump or powered aeration. A seedling sits in a net pot above nutrient solution. As the plant takes up water, the solution level drops and leaves an air gap, giving some roots access to oxygen. UF/IFAS Extension’s Kratky guide notes that container size and nutrient balance matter.

- A lightproof container to hold the nutrient solution
- Net pots and a growing medium to hold seedlings
- Hydroponic nutrient solution and water
- Seeds or seedlings
Follow the nutrient product’s directions for the crop and the volume of water in your container. A passive setup is one option; a ready-made kit is not required.

Choosing between home hydroponic systems
Different systems manage water, oxygen, power, and light differently. Choose based on your space and how much monitoring you are willing to do; the extension sources do not provide comparable prices or quantified yields.

Light, oxygen, and ongoing care
Plan for the light available in your space
Light needs vary by crop, season, and location. UNH Extension says some moderate-light crops, including lettuce, salad greens, and some herbs, may grow in a sunny window in summer. Winter growing or high-light fruiting plants call for supplemental lighting. Commercial home systems often include grow lights, according to Illinois Extension; a separate LED grow light may be useful if your site does not provide enough light.
Keep roots supplied with oxygen
Roots need oxygen as well as water and nutrients. In Kratky, the declining solution level creates an air space. In a raft system, roots sit in nutrient solution, so good aeration is critical. System design determines how oxygen reaches the roots.

Indoor hydroponics can make year-round growing possible where outdoor soil growing is impractical, but it can cost more than pots or in-ground gardening. Depending on the system, you may need to monitor water level, nutrient concentration, and pH; some setups also require electricity. Illinois Extension discusses these practical trade-offs.
