Turn gathered acorns and pine cones into six simple seasonal projects: a pine-cone bird feeder, a garland, a wreath, a centerpiece, a nature display, and a garden-bed accent. Most use basic household supplies; the feeder needs a little extra attention to keep its food fresh and safe.
Gather and prepare your materials
Collect sound, dry acorns and pine cones from places where gathering is allowed. Brush off loose dirt and let damp materials dry fully before using them indoors. Check acorns for holes, cracks, or signs of insects, and set aside damaged ones. Useful supplies include sturdy twine, a shallow bowl or tray, and, for the wreath, craft wire or glue.

1. Make a pine-cone bird feeder
This is the only project here with instructions documented by extension sources. It is also the one that requires regular monitoring, because damp or moldy food should not be left out.

- Tie a loop of sturdy string around the upper part of a dry pine cone so it can hang securely.
- Coat the spaces between the cone scales with peanut butter, then roll the cone in birdseed. - Hang it where you can check it easily, and choose seed appropriate for the birds in your area.
Keep the food dry, discard it if it becomes wet or moldy, and clean the feeder regularly. Supplemental feeding can concentrate wildlife and increase disease-transmission risks. 2. String an acorn-and-pine-cone garland
Choose small cones and sound acorns, then thread or tie them onto sturdy twine. Alternate the shapes and leave a little space between pieces so the garland hangs naturally rather than bunching together. If the acorns are difficult to pierce safely, tie them in place or use a short loop of craft wire instead of forcing a hole.

Hang the finished garland under a sheltered porch, across a mantel, or along a railing. Keep it dry if you want it to last, and take it down if the materials become damp or deteriorate.

3. Build a natural-material wreath
Use a purchased or reused wreath base. Arrange cones and acorns over the base before attaching them so you can adjust the pattern, then secure them with craft wire or glue according to the product directions. Wire makes it easier to remove pieces later; glue can create a tidier fixed arrangement but may not hold up outdoors.

Display the wreath indoors or in a sheltered spot, especially if you used adhesive. Keep it clear of candles, fireplaces, and other open flames.
4. Arrange a rustic table centerpiece
Fill a shallow bowl or tray with clean, dry cones and acorns. Add a few fallen leaves for color if you like, and keep the arrangement low enough that it does not obstruct conversation or a view across the table. Refresh it when leaves crumble or materials become dusty.

Small loose pieces can be a choking hazard. Place the centerpiece out of reach of young children and pets who might chew or swallow them.

Arrange cones, acorns, and a few labeled leaves on a tray or an outdoor shelf. A simple label with the tree or leaf name can make the display useful as well as decorative. Keep it in a sheltered location, and replace items as they become damp or deteriorate.

6. Add a temporary garden-bed accent
Group a few cones and acorns beside a rustic garden marker or around a pot for a small seasonal detail. Treat them as decoration, not mulch: loose acorns are food for wildlife, and leaving food out can have unintended effects. Remove the pieces when they get wet, break down, or are no longer wanted.
