Lavender is best suited to a sunny outdoor bed or container, where its roots can stay well drained and air can move around the foliage. You can bring a potted plant indoors for winter, but dependable year-round indoor growth is not established by the extension guidance cited here. These six tips cover outdoor care, containers, and the limits of overwintering lavender inside.
1. Give lavender strong sun and fast-draining soil
For outdoor plants, aim for full sun. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommends at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily in its Iowa growing guide, last reviewed in May 2026. Treat that as regional extension guidance, not a universal indoor-light prescription. Lavender grows best in sandy or loamy soil that drains quickly. In clay, a raised bed or berm can improve drainage; leave enough space between plants for air to circulate around the foliage. Iowa State Extension’s lavender guide

2. Water to establish, then let the soil drain
Water newly planted lavender regularly during its first growing season while it establishes. Established plants tolerate drought better than saturated soil. Overwatering and poor drainage can contribute to root disease and shorten a plant’s life in the garden. Check that water can escape freely from a container and avoid leaving its saucer full. The sources do not establish a universal watering interval; soil, weather, and whether the plant is in the ground or a pot all affect how quickly it dries. Illinois Extension’s lavender guidance
3. Keep fertilizer to a minimum
Lavender has low fertility needs. Iowa State Extension warns that excess nitrogen encourages leafy growth at the expense of flowers, while Illinois Extension’s 2024 guide says fertilizer is generally unnecessary. Start with suitable soil and drainage rather than routinely feeding the plant. Illinois Extension’s backyard lavender tips

4. Prune without cutting into bare old wood
Lavender is a woody plant and may not regrow from leafless sections. Use clean, sharp pruners and keep cuts within green growth. Pruning timing depends on climate: in colder areas, Illinois Extension advises waiting until spring growth appears. An Ask Extension response by Chris Rusch, dated October 11, 2023, discusses annual pruning after flowering and advises stopping six weeks before the local first frost because pruned plants can be more susceptible to winter damage. The practical tradeoff is to shape the plant while it is actively growing, but avoid late-season cuts that leave it vulnerable before winter. 5. Match the lavender and container to your winters
Cold tolerance varies by type and climate, so choose a variety based on local winter conditions rather than assuming one cultivar suits every region. In Iowa, Iowa State Extension describes English lavender as the most reliable option for cold conditions and lists ‘Munstead’ and ‘Hidcote’ among compact, relatively hardy cultivars. Those recommendations are Iowa-specific, not a universal ranking.

Containers can help where garden soil drains poorly, and a movable pot makes it possible to bring lavender indoors for winter. However, container-grown lavender may not overwinter well outdoors in a pot. A pot also dries differently from an in-ground bed, so check its soil rather than following a fixed schedule. Consider local cold and wet-winter conditions, the sun and airflow at the chosen spot, and whether you can move the container when choosing where to plant. 6. Treat indoor growing as winter protection, not guaranteed year-round houseplant care
The strongest guidance here supports growing lavender outdoors or in a container and bringing the container inside for winter. It does not establish that lavender is an easy year-round houseplant, nor does it give a universal indoor temperature, humidity level, or watering interval. If you bring a pot indoors, apply the same basic principles: choose the brightest suitable location available and do not keep the soil persistently wet. Those are practical implications of the extension guidance on sun and drainage, not a complete indoor-care formula. Iowa State Extension’s lavender guide

Prevent common problems and harvest flowers
Reduce disease risk
Good drainage, restrained watering, and airflow address the main conditions associated with lavender problems: root rot is linked to poor drainage or overwatering, while humidity and crowding can contribute to fungal disease. Iowa State Extension notes that aphids and spittlebugs are occasional, usually minor pests in its regional guidance. Iowa State Extension’s lavender guide
Harvest at the start of flowering
Cut stems as flower buds begin to open, after the dew has dried. Dry small bundles in a warm, dry, ventilated place out of direct sunlight, or use a cool, dark, ventilated location as Illinois Extension advises. Iowa State Extension’s lavender guide Illinois Extension’s lavender guidance
