Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo keep a poinsettia after the holidays, give it bright indirect light, water only when the soil feels dry, and keep it away from drafts and temperature extremes. That can preserve its colorful display for months. Getting it to color up again next Christmas takes more work: spring pruning, summer growth and a daily autumn schedule of uninterrupted darkness.
1. Choose bright light and steady temperatures
Set the plant near a bright south-, east- or west-facing window, where it gets at least six hours of indirect light. Keep it out of harsh direct sun and away from cold window glass, drafty doors, fireplaces and heating vents. Aim for daytime temperatures around 60–70°F and nights in the mid-50s; Utah State University Extension advises not exposing poinsettias to temperatures below 50°F (Utah State University Extension).

2. Water when the soil is dry, and let excess drain
Check the soil with a finger and water thoroughly when it feels dry. Let water run out of the pot, then empty the saucer. If the pot is wrapped in decorative foil or plastic, remove it or make drainage holes so water cannot collect around the roots. Once leaves and colorful bracts begin to fall, water less often; do not let the stems shrivel.

With good indoor care, poinsettias should remain attractive for two to three months, according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach (Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, updated 2024). While the bracts still look good, continue giving the plant bright indirect light and watering when the soil is dry.

4. Prune and repot as spring growth begins
In March to early May, cut the stems back to about 3–6 inches above the soil. This spring cutback is recommended by University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension (University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension). If the plant needs more room or the old mix is depleted, repot it in fresh, well-drained soilless potting mix.
When new growth appears, move the poinsettia to a sunny window and begin feeding with a balanced or dilute fertilizer, following the product label. Avoid fertilizing a resting plant that has not resumed growth.

5. Grow it outdoors in summer and pinch for shape
After frost danger has passed, acclimate the plant gradually to outdoor conditions over one to two weeks, beginning in shade and increasing its exposure. Extension guidance recommends about 6–8 hours of sunlight outdoors, with some afternoon shade. Bring it back inside before nights approach 55–60°F.
To encourage a fuller shape, pinch off shoot tips once or twice from late June through August. Stop pinching by early September; later pinching can delay the flower initiation needed for holiday color.

6. Give it long, completely dark autumn nights
Poinsettias are short-day plants: long nights trigger the color change in their bracts. From early October, provide bright light during the day and 14–15 hours of uninterrupted darkness every night, often by placing the plant in darkness from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. Continue until the bracts show color. Even brief light exposure at night can prevent or delay flowering, University of Maryland Extension warns (University of Maryland Extension).
Bring the plant indoors by late September or when nighttime temperatures approach 55–60°F. A closet or a light-proof enclosure can provide darkness, but remember to return the plant to daytime light on schedule; ordinary room or street light reaching it overnight can disrupt the dark period.

Keeping it attractive versus reblooming
| Goal | Effort and timing | Light control | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep the holiday display | Routine indoor care: suitable light, stable temperatures and watering as the soil dries. | No special dark schedule. | Good care can keep the plant attractive for 2–3 months, according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. |
| Bring back holiday color | Spring pruning, summer growth and pinching, then a daily autumn darkness routine. | Requires 14–15 hours of complete darkness nightly from early October until bracts color. | It can rebloom, but Maryland Extension cautions that a home-grown plant is unlikely to match the size and quality of a greenhouse-grown poinsettia. |
For most owners, preserving the current display is the simpler goal. Reblooming is possible if you can maintain the fall light schedule consistently; Utah State University Extension horticulturist Jerry Goodspeed notes that poinsettias’ long nights launch their color change (Utah State University Extension).
