Use white vinegar only for limited garment pretreatment, not as a universal stain remover or a routine washing-machine additive. When vinegar may help with clothing
Whirlpool describes vinegar as an option for pretreating some stains and odors, including soaking sweat-stained garments; Maytag also recommends checking for damage or discoloration on a hidden area first. These are limited uses, not a guarantee that vinegar will remove a particular stain or suit every fabric. Follow the garment’s care label.

Pretreat a suitable garment
- Read the care label and confirm the garment can tolerate the proposed treatment.
- If fabric damage or color change is a concern, test a hidden area first, as Maytag advises.
- Use distilled white vinegar only for a stain or odor that is appropriate for pretreatment. The manufacturer guidance does not establish one dose or concentration for all fabrics.
- Rinse the garment thoroughly with water before placing it in the washing machine, then wash according to its care label.
Whirlpool also mentions vinegar as one possible bleach-free option for white garments. That is not a promise of whitening; rinse thoroughly, and never combine it with bleach.

Why appliance advice differs
Whirlpool warns that vinegar’s acidity may corrode some washer components, especially rubber parts, and says vinegar used with detergent may compromise cleaning performance. Maytag also advises against using vinegar in the washer. Samsung’s surfaced recommendations differ, so the relevant instruction is the one for your own model—not a general laundry rule.
How to clean a washer with limescale or residue
Garment pretreatment and appliance maintenance are different jobs. For limescale or hard-water deposits, Bosch recommends a washer descaler; for greasy residues, it recommends washer cleaner. Whirlpool likewise points users to a purpose-made washing-machine cleaner or the washer’s use-and-care guide. Follow the product and appliance instructions for the specific machine.

Vinegar and bleach must not be mixed
Never mix vinegar with chlorine bleach. Whirlpool warns that the combination can create toxic chlorine gas. Keep them separate during laundry and cleaning; do not add vinegar to a load or solution that contains chlorine bleach.
