You can clean shower tiles with less effort by matching the cleaner to the tile and grout, letting it dwell as directed, brushing grout gently, and rinsing and drying thoroughly. For routine upkeep, wipe or squeegee the walls after showering. Avoid treating vinegar or bleach as universally safe: the wrong cleaner can damage grout, tile, or stone.
1. Match the cleaner to the tile, grout, and buildup
Start by identifying the surface and the soil. Ceramic and porcelain tile, cement grout, premixed grout, and natural stone do not all tolerate the same products. Check both the tile and grout manufacturer’s guidance, then read the cleaner label for compatibility. Test an inconspicuous spot before treating the whole shower.
- Routine cleaning on ceramic or porcelain: LATICRETE recommends a neutral-pH cleaner for routine care. MAPEI describes its UltraCare Concentrated Tile & Grout Cleaner as a neutral-pH product for routine care on ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, and grout; follow its current label and compatibility directions. MAPEI product information and LATICRETE care guidance.
- Grout soil: The American Cleaning Institute (ACI) advises using an alkaline cleaner for grout. Its guidance notes that cement grout is vulnerable to acids over time. ACI grout guidance.
- Soap scum or hard-water marks: Choose a product labeled for the actual tile and grout. LATICRETE identifies its STONETECH Soap Scum Remover for soap scum and hard-water stains on stone, tile, and grout; that is a manufacturer claim, so verify current label directions for your installation. LATICRETE care guidance.
Do not assume vinegar is safe simply because it is a common household cleaner. Acids can gradually dissolve cement grout; highly acidic substances may etch some tile, and vinegar can etch natural stone. MAPEI also warns that repeated vinegar use can weaken cement grout. ACI, LATICRETE, and MAPEI care information.
2. Let the cleaner do some of the work
Apply the product as its label directs and allow it to sit for the specified dwell time before brushing or wiping. ACI recommends giving cleaner time to work, but there is no universal wait time: the right interval depends on the product and surface. Do not let a cleaner dry on the tile or grout unless its directions explicitly allow it.

3. Brush grout gently, not aggressively
Use a soft-bristle grout brush to work the loosened soil from grout lines. Avoid harsh abrasives and powdered abrasive cleansers, which can scratch tile. For grout, ACI also suggests a paste made from baking soda and a little water; apply it gently and rinse it away. ACI grout guidance.
4. Rinse until cleaner and loosened soil are gone
Rinse the surface thoroughly after cleaning. Cleaner left behind can form a sticky film that attracts dirt, according to the Tile Council of North America (TCNA). Oily or waxy products can also leave residue in grout. TCNA describes applying cleaner, removing the dirty water, rinsing, and removing the rinse water as an effective professional-style approach. TCNA FAQ.
5. Dry the tile and grout
After rinsing, buff the surface dry with a clean cloth or clear remaining water with a squeegee. Drying helps prevent water from lingering and contributing to fresh hard-water deposits. ACI recommends drying or buffing after rinsing. ACI hard-surface guidance.

Make a quick wipe-down part of the routine
Wipe or squeegee tiled shower walls after use to remove water before it dries. ACI calls wiping walls with a towel after each use the easiest way to keep them clean. ACI hard-surface guidance.
Use stronger options only when the surface allows them
If normal cleaning does not remove stubborn grout soil, TCNA says steam may be tried. It is not a guaranteed no-scrub fix: MAPEI cautions that prolonged high heat can damage some premixed grouts. Check the grout and steam-cleaner manufacturers’ directions before use. TCNA FAQ and MAPEI care information.

- Gentle formula perfect for tinted grout and frequent use
- Cleans grout, tile floors and backsplashes

Bleach is another cautious, occasional option for appropriate grout and surfaces—not a routine all-purpose cleaner. ACI describes a grout-stain treatment of 3/4 cup household bleach per gallon of water, followed by thorough rinsing. MAPEI warns that regular bleach use can discolor and weaken grout. Check current product and surface directions, ventilate the area, and never mix bleach with other cleaners. ACI grout guidance and MAPEI care information.
