6 Common Orchid Growing Mistakes—and How to Fix Them

Wrinkled leaves, dropped buds or no blooms? Check roots and growing conditions before changing your orchid’s care.

If your orchid has wrinkled leaves, dropping buds or no new flowers, check its roots, potting medium and growing conditions before changing its care. These six common mistakes often explain what is going wrong, but the right fix depends on the orchid’s identity and home environment. The advice below is aimed especially at household Phalaenopsis orchids; use a care sheet for your specific orchid before setting exact light, temperature or watering targets.

1. Watering by the calendar—or keeping roots wet

Most orchids grown by hobbyists are epiphytes: in nature, they grow attached to other plants rather than in permanently wet soil. Their roots need air as well as water. Roots kept wet too long can suffocate and rot. The American Orchid Society (AOS) author Ron McHatton put it plainly: “More orchids are killed by incorrect watering than by any other mistake.” His watering article was published in the November 2024 issue of Orchids magazine (AOS watering guidance).

How to fix it

  • Check the potting medium instead of watering on a fixed weekly schedule. Wait until its surface looks dry, the pot feels lighter, or a wooden skewer comes out almost dry.
  • When it is time to water, water thoroughly and let the pot drain completely.
  • If roots are mushy or hollow, suspect that the medium stays wet too long. Repot into a better-draining medium and use less water-retentive sphagnum, as appropriate for the orchid and your conditions (AOS root-problem guidance).

A fast-drying pot or medium is not automatically best for every home: humidity, airflow and watering habits affect how quickly a pot dries. Choose a setup you can monitor and manage.

2. Treating wrinkled leaves as proof the orchid needs more water

Wrinkled leaves indicate that the plant is not taking up enough water, but they do not identify the cause. Underwatering can do it; so can root loss, including roots damaged by overwatering or deteriorated medium.

How to check before watering

  • Look at the roots and feel the potting medium. Plump, healthy roots with a light pot and dry medium point toward underwatering.
  • Damaged roots may mean the plant has lost its ability to take up water. Adding more water blindly can worsen rot rather than help.
  • Use the root and medium condition to decide whether to adjust watering or address root damage (AOS guidance on wrinkled leaves).

3. Giving too little light, especially when expecting flowers

If an orchid grows but will not bloom or rebloom, check its light before reaching for fertilizer. The AOS says insufficient light is the most common reason orchids fail to bloom. Its general care guide states: “Not giving your plants enough light is the most common reason for your orchids to fail to bloom.”

How to fix it

Identify the orchid and consult its matching AOS care sheet before changing its exposure. There is no single light target that fits every orchid genus and home. The AOS care sheets cover different orchid types, while its general care guide explains how light fits into overall care.

4. Leaving degraded or persistently wet potting medium in place

Potting medium changes over time. When it breaks down, it can stop providing the drainage and airflow roots need; dead roots can be a sign that it is time to investigate. The AOS also recommends repotting when the plant outgrows its container.

How to fix it

  • Repot when the medium has broken down or the plant has outgrown its container.
  • Choose fresh medium that drains well while retaining enough moisture for the orchid, and match it to your growing conditions and watering habits.
  • If the old medium stays wet too long, prioritize better drainage; avoid simply replacing it with another mix that holds excessive moisture for your setup.

For timing and method, see the AOS repotting guidance. If you are not sure which medium suits your orchid, consult its care sheet rather than choosing by a universal ranking.

5. Moving the orchid or changing its environment abruptly

Bud drop can have several causes, so it is not proof of one particular mistake. AOS troubleshooting guidance lists temperature extremes or rapid changes, drafts from heating or air conditioning, moving the plant, low humidity, ethylene from ripening produce and pests among possible contributors.

How to investigate

  • Review recent changes: Did you move the orchid, expose it to a draft or place it near a new heat or cooling source?
  • Check the buds and leaves for signs of pests, and consider whether the room conditions changed.
  • Address a likely stressor and avoid making several major changes at once, which can make it harder to tell what helped.

Use the AOS bud-blast troubleshooting guidance and orchid pest and disease resources to narrow down possible causes.

6. Expecting fertilizer to solve every growth or flowering problem

Fertilizer can support growth, but it cannot compensate for poor light, unhealthy roots or medium that stays too wet. The AOS notes that orchids can grow and flower for fairly long periods without fertilizer, although some feeding generally improves results.

How to fix it

Address light, root health and potting medium first. If you then choose to feed, follow a suitable care guide for your orchid and the fertilizer product label. The AOS general guide provides feeding advice, but its recommendations should not be treated as a universal schedule for every genus and home.

Miracle-Gro Ready to Use Orchid Plant Food Mist, Feeds All Types of Indoor Orchid Plants, 8 oz.
  • Mist roots and growing media weekly
  • Nutrients are instantly available
  • Easy-to-use
  • Apply to roots and growing media once a week

A quick symptom-first check

  • Wrinkled leaves: Check roots and medium before adding water; underwatering and root loss can look similar above the pot.
  • No flowers: Check whether the orchid is receiving suitable light, then confirm its identity and consult a matching care sheet.
  • Dropping buds: Review recent moves, drafts, temperature changes, humidity and possible pests rather than assuming a single cause.
  • Mushy or hollow roots: Investigate how long the medium stays wet and whether it has broken down.

Orchid care depends on the plant’s identity, season, pot, medium, humidity, airflow and location. Treat these checks as a first diagnosis, not a substitute for species-specific guidance.
