Several flowers open at dawn or later in the morning, but their schedules and growing needs differ. For a trellis, sunny container, pond, or coastal site, these six plants offer distinct ways to enjoy flowers early in the day.
What does “bloom at dawn” mean?
Not every flower that opens in the morning does so at sunrise. The University of Cambridge Botanic Garden distinguishes plants that open at sunrise and close at sunset, such as morning glory, from Jack-go-to-bed-at-noon, which opens at dawn and closes shortly after noon. Light and temperature can also influence flowering schedules, so timing may vary with conditions.

Six plants that open at dawn or in the morning
1. Morning glory (Ipomoea tricolor)
Morning glory’s indigo flowers open around dawn and wither by dusk; fresh flowers appear daily, according to Singapore’s National Parks Board. The climbing vine can wind around a trellis or wall. University of Illinois Extension says it can be started indoors or sown directly in the garden, making it a fit for a vertical planting space.

2. Jack-go-to-bed-at-noon
Cambridge Botanic Garden identifies this flower as one that opens at dawn and closes shortly after noon. Its schedule is a useful reminder that “morning-blooming” can describe a flower that closes well before evening.

3. Calendula ‘Dawn Apricot’ (Calendula officinalis)
Chicago Botanic Garden describes this cultivar’s double apricot-orange flowers as opening first thing in the morning and closing by the end of the day. It suits full sun and can be planted in a container or directly in the garden. The garden profile lists May–June bloom time in its local context; that season should not be assumed for other regions.
4. Tropical day-blooming water lily (Nymphaea)
This is an aquatic choice for a pond, water garden, or suitable container—not a border flower. North Carolina State University Extension reports that tropical day-blooming water lilies open between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. and close in late afternoon or near sunset. That interval applies to the tropical day-blooming water lily described in the profile, not to all water lilies.

5. American yellow lotus (Nelumbo lutea)

University of Florida IFAS Extension describes pinkish-lavender flowers with purple-red throats that open early in the morning and close before noon. This creeping vine is a coastal plant, so it is not a general-purpose garden groundcover; consider it where the growing conditions and location suit its coastal context.

Choose by growing space, not just opening time
| Plant | Reported opening window | Best-fit setting in the cited profiles |
|---|---|---|
| Morning glory | Around dawn | Trellis or wall |
| Jack-go-to-bed-at-noon | At dawn; closes shortly after noon | Not stated by Cambridge Botanic Garden |
| Calendula ‘Dawn Apricot’ | First thing in the morning | Full-sun border or container |
| Tropical day-blooming water lily | 7:30–9:30 a.m., per North Carolina State University Extension | Pond, water garden, or container |
| American yellow lotus | Early morning | Pond with warm-water conditions |
| Beach morning glory | Early morning; closes before noon | Suitable coastal setting |
If neither an aquatic setup nor a coastal site suits your garden, daylilies are a perennial alternative: the American Daylily Society says most bloom for a single day beginning in early morning and lasting until evening. As with the six choices above, flowering time and seasonal timing depend on the plant and its growing conditions.
