Asparagus ferns bring light, finely textured greenery into a home, and their flexible use in containers, hanging baskets, and flower arrangements makes them useful beyond a single display. Their benefits are ornamental and practical—not proven air purification or health effects. Despite the name, they are ornamental asparagus plants, not true ferns.

What is an asparagus fern?

“Asparagus fern” is a common name for ornamental plants in the asparagus group. For example, North Carolina State Extension identifies Sprengeri Group as belonging to the asparagus family, not the true ferns: NCSU Plant Toolbox: Asparagus densiflorus Sprengeri Group. Names and taxonomy vary among horticultural sources, so check the cultivar when looking up care advice.

Six benefits of having asparagus ferns at home

1. Airy, fine-textured greenery

Wisconsin Extension describes the plant’s bright green, arching stems and airy foliage as ornamental qualities. That fine texture can soften a room’s plant display without visually overwhelming it. University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension: Asparagus fern

2. A decorative indoor plant

Wisconsin Extension lists asparagus fern as a houseplant, and UF/IFAS says Meyers asparagus fern can grow in a bright indoor location. It offers greenery for interior spaces; these sources do not establish that it cleans indoor air or produces a measurable health benefit. UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions: Asparagus fern

3. Several ways to display it

4. A useful contrast with other plants

Its fine foliage can contrast with plants that have larger leaves or medium- to coarse-textured foliage. In a mixed display, that difference in texture adds visual variety without requiring another bold color or oversized plant. Wisconsin Extension

What care helps it look its best?

Care depends on the cultivar. Wisconsin Extension describes direct or bright indirect light indoors and notes that tuberous roots can store water, allowing the plant to withstand periods of neglect; brighter light encourages faster growth. UF/IFAS, by contrast, advises keeping Meyers asparagus fern out of direct sun and avoiding wet soil. These are not interchangeable instructions for every plant sold under the common name.

  • Identify the cultivar, then follow care guidance for that plant rather than assuming all asparagus ferns have the same light needs.
  • For Meyers asparagus fern, UF/IFAS recommends a bright indoor location without direct sun and warns that wet soil can contribute to root rot. Its container guidance supports using well-drained soil; it does not specify a required brand or special potting formula.
  • Do not interpret drought tolerance in one source as a reason to leave every cultivar dry. Match watering to the plant and its growing conditions.

See UF/IFAS guidance for Meyers asparagus fern and Wisconsin Extension’s asparagus fern profile for their respective recommendations.

Is an asparagus fern safe around pets and children?

No plant should be treated as harmless to a child or pet who may chew it. The cited extension sources report that eating the plant, particularly its berries, may cause gastrointestinal upset. Sap contact can irritate skin or cause dermatitis. Keep the plant out of reach of children and pets likely to chew it, and avoid contact with sap. After an ingestion or skin exposure, contact an appropriate poison-control or veterinary professional for advice.
