Start a kitchen renovation with the way you cook, move, store things, and gather—not with a finish trend. The ideas below range from focused updates to major layout changes, so you can choose what fits your room, household, maintenance preferences, and project scope.

That practical-first approach aligns with the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s planning guidance on activity areas, circulation, storage, lighting, accessibility, and code compliance. Its 2025 trend report also highlights personalization, concealed storage, multifunctional spaces, natural materials, and mixed finishes. Those are useful prompts, not rules for every kitchen.

Start with layout and everyday function

Before choosing cabinets or counters, map the routes between food storage, preparation, cooking, cleanup, and the places people gather. An island or open plan can help in the right room, but can also obstruct circulation or remove useful storage if it is added without a plan.

  1. Reorganize work zones. Group food storage, prep, cooking, and cleanup around the way your household actually uses the kitchen.
  2. Add an island only when the room supports it. Check clear routes around it and decide whether the household needs extra prep space, storage, seating, or some combination.
  3. Make a peninsula work harder. Use its footprint for drawers, a useful landing surface, or seating if that does not interfere with cooking and circulation.
  4. Consider a second island only in a generously sized room. Treat it as a specialized option, not a default layout; it needs to serve a distinct purpose without crowding other work areas.
  5. Create a beverage or coffee station. Group the equipment, cups, and supplies for a daily routine in one reachable spot.
  6. Give meal prep its own place. A dedicated counter section or prep sink can help when it fits real cooking habits and the plumbing plan.
  7. Connect the kitchen to dining or living space selectively. Before removing a wall, weigh improved sightlines and social connection against lost storage, noise, structural work, and the value of the room being opened.
  8. Plan a landing area near key appliances. Reserve counter space where groceries, hot cookware, or dishes can be set down safely and conveniently.
  9. Use seating to match how the household gathers. A breakfast perch, island seats, or a nearby table should leave work routes clear and suit the way people actually eat.

Make cabinetry and storage work for you

Storage choices should reflect what you own and how you reach it. A concealed pantry may calm the room visually; drawers and pull-outs can make everyday contents easier to access. The NKBA’s 2025 industry survey found that 87% of respondents said homeowners want concealed pantries behind doors or panels. That is a professional survey response, not a direct poll of all homeowners.

  1. Use deep drawers for cookware. They can make pots and pans easier to see and retrieve than items stacked in a low cabinet, depending on the cabinet layout.
  2. Fit pull-out storage to suitable base cabinets. Check the cabinet dimensions, hardware clearances, and the items you want to store before selecting an organizer.
  3. Take advantage of vertical space. Tall cabinets can store pantry goods or less-used equipment, provided frequently used items remain reachable.
  4. Hide pantry storage behind a door or matching panel. This can reduce visual clutter while keeping food and small appliances close at hand.
  5. Build a small-appliance garage. A cabinet with an appropriate work surface and outlet can tuck away appliances used often; confirm electrical and ventilation needs for the design.
  6. Mix display cabinets with closed storage. Glass-front doors can add a focal point, while solid doors keep everyday clutter out of view.
  7. Give the island its own storage role. Use its drawers or cabinets for items needed at the island rather than duplicating storage without a purpose.
  8. Choose hardware for comfortable use. Pulls and knobs can add contrast, but grip, reach, and ease of cleaning matter as well as appearance.
  9. Keep often-used items within easy reach. Arrange shelves and drawers around the people who use them, with less frequently used items stored higher or lower as appropriate.
  10. Use an accent cabinet to add character. A contrasting color, wood tone, or glass-front section can distinguish a coffee station or display zone from quieter perimeter cabinets.

Choose surfaces, color, and finishes with care

There is no single palette that fits every kitchen. In Houzz’s 2025 U.S. Kitchen Trends Study, based on 1,620 homeowners who had completed, were undertaking, or planned a renovation or addition, transitional style was the most selected style in the sample, followed by traditional. In a separate NKBA survey of 523 industry professionals for its 2025 report, 76% selected green as a leading kitchen color and 59% listed white oak as a preferred cabinet color. The findings describe different groups and should be read as options, not universal preferences.

  1. Compare countertop materials by care and use. Consider appearance, cleaning instructions, durability claims, and project requirements instead of choosing on trend alone.
  2. Give the island a contrasting surface. A different color or material can make it a focal point when it still works with the perimeter cabinets and overall palette.
  3. Extend the backsplash higher. A full-height backsplash creates a more continuous visual plane; Houzz reported increased use of full-coverage backsplashes in its survey, but the look and installation requirements are project-specific.
  4. Use patterned tile for a defined accent. A backsplash is a contained place to add color or pattern without committing every surface to it.
  5. Consider a slab backsplash for fewer visual breaks. Coordinate the slab with the countertop and confirm its material and installation requirements.
  6. Choose flooring for maintenance and household needs. Houzz respondents selected resilient or vinyl flooring, hardwood, and ceramic or porcelain tile at different rates; that survey records choices, not a performance ranking. Review product-specific care and traction information.
  7. Combine materials with a clear palette. Wood, stone-look surfaces, metal, and painted finishes can coexist when their tones and visual weight are considered together.
  8. Try warm neutrals or natural wood tones. These can create a softer backdrop, while the NKBA’s 2025 industry survey identified light, warm, natural tones as a trend theme.
  9. Use green or blue as a color statement. Apply color to an island, backsplash, wall, or accessories if you want a focal point without making every surface a commitment.
  10. Choose cabinet doors to suit the room’s style. Shaker doors were selected by 61% of homeowners in Houzz’s 2025 U.S. survey, but a simpler or more detailed profile may better fit your home.
  11. Use cabinet hardware to reinforce the design. A change in shape, finish, or scale can add contrast without changing the cabinet fronts.
  12. Carry a finish into an adjacent room thoughtfully. Relating a wood tone, paint color, or metal finish to nearby spaces can help an open-plan kitchen feel connected rather than matched mechanically.

Layer lighting and improve atmosphere

One ceiling fixture rarely serves every task. Plan general illumination, focused work lighting, and optional accent lighting together, and coordinate fixtures and controls with the electrical layout. The NKBA’s 2026 trend release summarizes a 2025 survey of 634 industry respondents: 95% cited natural lighting, 93% quality lighting, and 92% task lighting for work zones as important considerations; 82% named under-cabinet lights among anticipated lighting types. These are professional views about expected trends, not a guarantee about any one project.

Ravinte Cabinet Handles, Brushed Nickel,5" Length,3" Hole Center,30 Pack
  • 365-Day Evaluation: We believe you'll find value in your Ravinte handles. Use them for a full year, and if they don't meet your needs, we're here to help
  • If you're replacing your handle, measure and ensure the center to center hole spacing of the current handle is 3 Inches Installing new cabinet handles, drill two holes with center to center spacing of 3 Inches

  • MEASUREMENT: 3 Inch(76mm), Total Length:5 inch(127mm), Diameter:1/2 inch(12mm) Projection:1-1/4 inch(32mm)
  1. Layer general, task, and accent lighting. Give room-wide illumination, counter work, and display areas distinct roles rather than asking one fixture to do everything.
  2. Add under-cabinet lights over work surfaces. They can illuminate counters directly; plan placement, wiring, and controls with the cabinetry and electrical work.
  3. Use pendants above an island when they fit. Check ceiling height, sightlines, and the island’s work needs before settling on fixture size and placement.
  4. Light the inside of selected cabinets. Interior lighting can make display cabinets or deep storage easier to see, subject to fixture and wiring requirements.
  5. Make the most of existing daylight. Keep window areas unobstructed where practical and consider glare, privacy, and the room’s orientation.
  6. Explore a window change only after checking feasibility. Altering an opening can involve structure, exterior work, and permits; it is not a simple finish update.
  7. Separate controls for different lighting layers. Independent switches or dimmers can support cooking, cleanup, and relaxed gatherings; have electrical work reviewed for local requirements.
  8. Light sinks and transitions deliberately. Aim for clear visibility at work areas and changes in floor level or direction of travel.

Choose appliances and details around real needs

  1. Select appliances around how you cook. Compare capacity, functions, service needs, available space, and energy information in the product documentation.
  2. Consider a multifunction appliance only if you will use it. In the NKBA’s 2025 industry survey, 91% of respondents said multifunctional appliances were popular with homeowners; that perception is not a reason to add features your household does not need.
  3. Plan ventilation with a qualified professional. The appropriate equipment and installation depend on the cooking appliances, kitchen design, and applicable local requirements; trend data does not prescribe a hood size or layout.
  4. Explore a custom refrigerator configuration if it suits the layout. The NKBA’s 2026 release reported custom refrigerator configurations as a trend among industry respondents, but fit, capacity, and service access should guide a specific choice.
  5. Add water filtration if it solves a household need. Check the system’s specifications, maintenance, and installation requirements before incorporating it.
  6. Use LED lighting as one possible efficiency choice. Houzz reported that 67% of homeowners in its 2025 U.S. survey installed LED lightbulbs; that adoption figure does not establish savings for an individual home.
  7. Consider efficient appliances using their product documentation. Compare relevant energy information for the models and usage patterns under consideration rather than assuming a universal result.
  8. Add a small herb-growing spot when conditions allow. A sunny sill or nearby shelf can be useful if the light and ongoing care suit the home.
  9. Look for finish documentation behind environmental claims. Choose lower-emission or durable options only where manufacturer information supports the specific claim.

Plan for accessibility and household changes

Long-term usability is part of good design, whether the kitchen is being adapted for current needs or planned for changing mobility. NKBA’s public planning reference covers accessibility, storage, lighting, clear floor space, passageways, and code compliance; its page describes a professional resource with more than 65 technical guidelines and 100 illustrations.

  1. Preserve clear routes through the kitchen. Consider household mobility, appliance doors, and the space needed to move between work areas.
  2. Favor reachable storage and easy-grip hardware. Drawers, pull-outs, and comfortable pulls can reduce awkward reaching; tailor choices to the people using the room.
  3. Consider visibility and footing together. Plan adequate lighting and review flooring traction information; rounded countertop corners may also suit some households, depending on the design and product.

Match the ideas to the project scope

Decide which changes belong in the same project before choosing finishes. A cosmetic refresh may focus on lighting, hardware, paint, or a backsplash; a partial update may add cabinetry or surfaces; layout changes, new plumbing, structural work, or replacing most of the kitchen require more coordination. In Houzz’s 2025 U.S. survey, 35% of respondents expanded their kitchen footprint and 58% added or upgraded an island. Houzz defined a major remodel as replacing at least all cabinets and appliances; its reported $60,000 median for major remodels is a survey result for projects as of mid-2024, not an estimate or quote for another home, location, or date.
