These five habits help control debris without sending useful organic material—or fertilizer—into streets and waterways.
1. Clear heavy leaf cover from lawn areas
Leaves can be useful mulch or compost, but a thick layer on grass can block light and contribute to dieback. Collect leaves where they are smothering turf; a leaf rake, blower, or mower collection bag can do the job. A rake is a simple option for hand collection, but the right method depends on the size and layout of the area.

Leaves in beds or other suitable areas need not all be removed. Reuse collected material in a compost pile or take it to a local yard-waste facility if accepted. Check municipal rules before putting yard debris out for collection.

2. Leave grass clippings on the lawn when practical
EPA calls leaving clippings on the lawn “grasscycling.” The clippings return nutrients to the soil and reduce the amount of yard material sent to landfills. You do not need to bag clippings automatically after every mow; whether to collect them depends on the lawn and the mowing conditions.

- Heavy duty 2 Ply Self standing yard waste bags
- Eco-friendly biodegradable brown paper bag accepted by municipal composting
- Large 30 gallon size for grass clippings, yard waste, sticks, leaves
- For moist or dry disposal
- Dimensions: 12" x 16" x 36”
EPA’s yard-care guidance includes grasscycling as a waste-reduction practice. It is not a substitute for assessing whether a lawn needs nutrients.
3. Raise the cutting height in hot weather
During hot summer weather, a higher mowing height helps grass shade its roots, which can reduce browning and weed growth and may lower watering needs. There is no single ideal height for every lawn: turf species differ. Use the tallest height within the recommended range for the grass you grow, as described in EPA’s landscaping tips.

4. Reuse suitable trimmings as mulch or compost
Leaves, grass clippings, and yard or tree trimmings can be compost feedstocks. EPA describes composting as a process that depends on appropriate moisture, oxygen, particle size, and a balance of carbon-rich and nitrogen-rich materials. For basic guidance on materials and conditions, see EPA’s composting overview.

Choose a method based on available space and the volume and type of material. If you use community composting, first confirm what the facility accepts and keep contaminants out. Mulch or compost suitable leaves and grass where practical, and keep loose debris from washing into streams. The EPA’s yard-care guidance also advises using fertilizer only when needed and avoiding application before windy or rainy conditions, which can carry it away in runoff.

Use seasonal planning as a flexible guide, not a fixed national schedule. EPA’s archived GreenScapes Seasonal Planning Calendar suggests preparing equipment and beds in spring, managing mowing and moisture in summer, handling leaves and garden cleanup in fall, and tuning up equipment and planning in winter. Climate, plant types, water restrictions, and local collection rules can all change the timing.

- Spring: Inspect irrigation and prepare beds as conditions allow.
- Summer: Mow at a height suited to your turf and avoid wasting water.
- Fall: Remove leaf cover that is heavy enough to harm grass, then reuse or dispose of it according to local rules.
- Winter: Clean and store equipment, and plan for the next season. If you maintain a mower yourself, the archived EPA calendar includes blade sharpening in its winter equipment tune-up suggestions.
The archived calendar is a general planning aid, not current local regulation. EPA directs readers to check with local authorities about requirements for watering, pesticide and fertilizer use, composting, and other practices. The calendar also reports that homeowners accounted for 15 million tons of yard waste each year; this is a historical figure published in the 2007 planner, not a current estimate.
