Yes—shrubby hydrangeas can form a flowering screen, but they work best as an informal row rather than a tightly clipped, year-round hedge. Choose plants for their mature size, give them room, and prune according to the type of hydrangea so you do not remove the stems that carry its flowers.
1. Choose shrubby hydrangeas and an informal hedge style
Mophead, lacecap, panicle and smooth hydrangeas can grow as a shrub row. This advice is for shrubby types, not climbing hydrangeas, which are used to cover a support such as a fence. Before buying, compare a plant’s mature width, flowering habit and site requirements. The Royal Horticultural Society’s guide to shrubby hydrangeas covers their growing needs.

A naturally shaped row is usually a better fit than a formal hedge clipped into a tight outline. Repeated shearing can cut off flower-bearing growth, particularly on hydrangeas that bloom on last year’s stems. If a sharply defined, frequently trimmed barrier is the priority, hydrangeas may not be the right choice; see the RHS advice on pruning hedges.

The RHS recommends spacing shrubby hydrangeas 90 cm–2.4 m (3–8 ft) apart, depending on vigor. Check the plant label for the cultivar’s eventual size, then choose spacing that suits both the available border depth and the look you want. Tighter spacing may help a screen fill in sooner, but can crowd shrubs as they mature.
#1 Best Overall
- Thrives in USDA zones 3-8
- Grows to mature size 48-60 inches W x 48-60 inches H
- Full sun to part sun
- Deciduous – Foliage loss in winter and new growth in spring
- Recommended spacing 48 inches
General hedge-planting advice often uses closer spacing, but it is not a hydrangea-specific rule. Use the hydrangea’s mature width rather than applying a generic hedge interval; the RHS explains planting considerations in its hedge-growing guide.
3. Plant in moist, well-drained soil
Light shade is generally a good position for shrubby hydrangeas. A sunnier spot can also work if the soil does not dry out in summer. Choose ground that holds moisture but drains, and avoid exposed sites or frost pockets where late frost can damage new growth.
Water plants in after planting and keep the soil damp over the following weeks. Mulch in spring to help reduce moisture loss. For site and planting guidance, consult the RHS shrubby hydrangea growing guide.
4. Prune according to the hydrangea type
There is no single pruning rule for a mixed hydrangea row. The key distinction is when each type flowers: some carry flowers on growth made the previous year, while others can be cut back in early spring. The RHS sets out the differences in its hydrangea pruning guide.
Rank #2
- PACK CONTENTS: Includes 35 Mixed Hydrangea seeds in one labeled packet for count-based sale. The labeled packet supports straightforward count-based storage and garden planning before sowing.
- PLANT IDENTITY: A mixed hydrangea type represented by rounded mophead flower clusters in several colors. Use the product name and plant identity shown on the packet when choosing a suitable garden location.
- GROWTH HABIT: Mixed Hydrangea follows the growth pattern described in the product details. Plan practical spacing, support, beds, or containers for local conditions.
- PLANTING SETTING: Use outdoors in partial shade to filtered sun with moisture-retentive soil and dependable drainage. Adjust sowing depth and timing to local climate and packet directions.
- CARE AND VARIATION: Keep conditions appropriate for the plant and avoid waterlogging. Germination, maturity, size, color, harvest, and bloom timing vary with climate, soil, and care.
Mophead and lacecap hydrangeas
These flower on previous-year growth. The RHS advises light pruning in mid-spring and removing one or two older stems at the base. Hard cutting can remove the shoots that would have flowered that season.
Panicle and smooth hydrangeas
Paniculata and smooth hydrangeas (Hydrangea arborescens) can be pruned in early spring. Reducing the previous year’s growth can encourage larger, more prolific flowerheads. Do not apply this approach automatically to mopheads or lacecaps.

Use selective cuts to remove old or misplaced stems instead of routinely shearing the whole row. The less often you cut back flower-bearing growth, the better the chance of preserving blooms. That means accepting a looser outline and a screen that may take time to knit together, with less structure in seasons when the shrubs are not in leaf.
Plant size involves a trade-off: according to the RHS, smaller hedge transplants can establish more rapidly, while semi-mature plants offer a quicker visual effect. Its hedge-selection advice discusses transplant size. For a different pruning perspective specific to paniculata, the RHS trial report records that two-bud pruning produced long extension growth and bigger but fewer flowers; trial judge Peter Jones described the result as “a tight, dense structure on plants pruned hard.” This finding concerns panicle hydrangeas in the trial, not every hydrangea type or every hedge situation. Read the RHS Hydrangea paniculata trial results.
