5 Annual Flowers for Breezy, Wind-Exposed Gardens

Five annual flowers to consider for exposed gardens, with practical notes on height, frost timing, support and watering.

For a breezy garden, consider compact zinnias, calendula, nasturtiums, sweet alyssum and cosmos grown with support. These are practical choices based on their growth habits and horticultural guidance—not a proven ranking of wind resistance. No cited source establishes a wind-speed threshold or compares the flowers in a controlled trial, so none should be considered windproof.

What makes a flower a practical choice for a windy garden?

Wind can dry plants by increasing moisture loss through their leaves. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) notes that “Wind can increase the rate of moisture loss from plants, particularly through the leaves, so plants grown in windy locations are prone to drying out.” The RHS also identifies hairy or waxy leaves and reduced leaf area as traits that can help limit water loss, but those general traits do not establish a wind-tolerance ranking for annual flowers. Exposure differs from garden to garden: prevailing wind, shelter, containers, soil and local weather all affect how plants perform. The flowers below are selected for useful habits or specific care guidance, not a guarantee against damage.

Five annual flowers to consider

1. Compact zinnias: colorful flowers on a lower profile

University of Illinois Extension describes zinnias as having large, colorful blooms on sturdy plants. The species varies in size: its general mature-height range is 8–36 inches, while named compact Zinnia angustifolia cultivars such as Crystal White and Crystal Orange are listed at 10–14 inches. Choosing a compact cultivar keeps growth closer to the ground, a reasonable choice for an exposed bed—but not proof that it will withstand strong winds. University of Illinois Extension: Zinnia

Zinnias are tender annuals. Sow or plant them after frost risk has passed and the soil and air have warmed. University of Illinois Extension: Annuals

2. Calendula: a cool-tolerant annual with moderate height

Calendula, or pot marigold (Calendula officinalis), is listed as a hardy annual and grows about 45–60 cm (18 inches–2 feet) tall, with yellow or orange flowers from summer into autumn. “Hardy” here refers to its tolerance of cooler conditions; it is not evidence that calendula resists wind. Its moderate height makes it worth considering where you want seasonal color without choosing one of the tallest annuals. RHS: Hardy annuals—sowing in spring

3. Nasturtiums: spreading or climbing, depending on how they grow

Nasturtiums (Tropaeolum majus) are easy-to-grow annuals with edible flowers. Their habit can sprawl or climb, and their listed height spans 30 cm–1.2 m (1–4 feet). In an exposed spot, plan for the plant’s eventual spread and height: use suitable support if it climbs, or contain sprawling growth where necessary. The broad size range means the cultivar and growing conditions matter. RHS: Hardy annuals—sowing in spring

4. Sweet alyssum: a low-growing choice for the front of a bed

University of Illinois Extension classifies sweet alyssum as a hardy annual. Its low-growing use makes it a sensible candidate for the front edge of a planting, where it avoids the leverage of a tall stem. The available guidance does not directly establish how it performs in strong winds, so treat its low habit as a practical consideration rather than a guarantee. 5. Cosmos: grow it with support in exposed locations

Cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus) is tall and bushy, typically 60–120 cm (2–4 feet) high. That height makes support especially relevant: Virginia Cooperative Extension advises that tall annuals such as cosmos may need protection from strong wind and rain. Cosmos can still suit a breezy garden if you plan to support it rather than assume its stems will stand unaided. RHS: Hardy annuals—sowing in spring

Compare height, habit and wind-related care

Flower Reported height or habit Planting and wind-related guidance
Compact zinnia Named compact Zinnia angustifolia cultivars: 10–14 inches; zinnias overall: 8–36 inches (University of Illinois Extension) Tender annual; wait until frost risk has passed and soil and air have warmed. Compact growth is a practical choice, not a wind-resistance finding.
Calendula 45–60 cm (18 inches–2 feet); hardy annual (RHS) Hardiness refers to cool tolerance, not demonstrated wind tolerance.
Nasturtium 30 cm–1.2 m (1–4 feet); sprawling or climbing (RHS) Allow for its spread or provide appropriate support if it climbs; the broad height range makes cultivar choice important.
Sweet alyssum Low-growing use; no height stated in the cited University of Illinois Extension annuals guidance A reasonable front-edge option by habit; direct performance in strong wind is not established.
Cosmos 60–120 cm (2–4 feet); tall and bushy (RHS) Virginia Cooperative Extension says tall cosmos may need support in strong wind and rain.

Plant and care for annuals in exposed conditions

Time planting around local frost dates

Use local frost dates and the plant’s temperature needs rather than one calendar date for every garden. Illinois Extension classifies calendula and sweet alyssum as hardy annuals, while zinnias are tender and should wait for warmer soil and air after frost risk. UMass Amherst advises planting sturdy young plants after the local last frost and following plant labels for spacing. It lists calendula, cosmos, nasturtium, sunflower and zinnia among annuals that can be sown from seed; being suitable for seed sowing does not mean those flowers are equally suited to wind. Stake tall cosmos before it leans

Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends beginning support when a plant is about one-third of its mature size. Set stakes close to the plant without damaging roots, and tie stems with soft material that will not cut into them. For delicate cosmos stems, stakes and crisscrossed strings can provide support. Adjust watering to wind, weather and soil

Hot, windy weather can increase water demand. Virginia Cooperative Extension advises shortening the interval between waterings in those conditions, while accounting for soil type, plant species, growth stage and rainfall. Check conditions in your garden rather than relying on a fixed schedule: the right interval will vary with those factors. Virginia Cooperative Extension: Annual Flowers—Culture and Maintenance
