5 Surprising Ways to Use Garlic in Your Garden

Garlic offers more than a kitchen harvest: use it for bulbs, scapes and garden interest, while treating pest-control claims as limited rather than guaranteed.

Garlic can do more in a garden than supply cloves for the kitchen. Grow it for bulbs, harvest its scapes, use its foliage and flowers for visual interest, or experiment with companion planting and pest sprays. The first three are straightforward garden uses; pest-control claims deserve more caution because extension sources say the evidence is limited and effects can vary.

1. Grow garlic for its bulbs

Garlic is a crop you start from individual cloves. Planting stock and varieties should suit your local climate: University of Minnesota Extension recommends cloves from garlic seed producers and cautions that grocery-store garlic may not perform well in Minnesota. Its growing advice is region-specific, so check local guidance for planting time and variety selection rather than treating Minnesota dates as universal. University of Minnesota Extension’s garlic-growing guide explains its regional recommendations.

If you are choosing planting stock, look for certified seed garlic appropriate to your climate. Garlic grown for its bulbs is the most direct way to make this plant part of a productive garden.

2. Harvest hardneck garlic scapes

Hardneck garlic sends up a curling flower stalk called a scape. Minnesota Extension recommends removing scapes after they start curling; they are edible, so they can be used in the kitchen rather than left as garden waste. Mature scapes can also be added to flower arrangements. See Minnesota Extension’s guidance on growing and harvesting garlic.

3. Use garlic as an ornamental plant

Garlic can contribute to the look of a garden as well as its harvest. Alabama Cooperative Extension describes its dark green foliage and ball-shaped flowers as landscape features. Consider it in a planting where its foliage and blooms can add texture and shape; ornamental appeal will depend on the variety and local growing conditions. Alabama Cooperative Extension’s overview of garlic in the garden discusses its landscape use.

4. Experiment with garlic as a companion plant

Gardeners traditionally plant garlic near some vegetables and herbs in hopes of deterring pests. Possible pairings listed in an Oregon State University Extension Master Gardener response include beets, carrots, lettuce, cabbage-family crops, tomatoes, strawberries and asparagus. Treat these as combinations to try, not as proven protections or guaranteed ways to improve growth.

The evidence for companion-planting advice is limited. Alabama Extension says little research substantiates many such practices, NC State Extension notes that most recommendations are unproven, and Kansas State Extension says pest-repelling effects are limited to certain pests. Keep track of what happens in your own beds, and use established crop-specific pest-management practices when a problem appears.

5. Consider garlic spray cautiously for pest management

Garlic-based sprays are sometimes suggested as a way to repel pests. Maryland Extension includes garlic sprays among options for pests of brassica crops such as cabbage and kale. That is not evidence of a universal garden pesticide: UF/IFAS Extension says research on garlic insecticides is limited and warns that garlic-based products may also repel or harm beneficial insects, including bees.

Before using any product, check its label for approved crops, target pests and application directions. Avoid spraying pollinators, and do not assume that a homemade garlic mixture has the same performance or safety directions as a labeled product. Maryland Extension’s vegetable succession and companion-planting resource discusses spray options for brassica pests; UF/IFAS Extension’s response on garlic and aphids describes the limits and potential non-target effects.
