5 Reasons to Plant Sunflowers Near Tomatoes—and What to Watch For

Sunflowers can have a place beside a tomato garden, but they are not a guaranteed way to boost tomato yield or keep pests away. A small 2025 field study found weed suppression and lower pest and disease incidence in a sunflower–tomato intercrop, but also found strong competition and lower total land productivity than growing the crops separately. The most defensible reasons to try the pairing are targeted trap cropping, potential habitat for beneficial insects, a more diverse planting, and the flowers themselves—provided you plan for light, water, and root space.

What the tomato–sunflower field study actually found

Ratna Yuniati, Siti Zahrotul Karimah, and Niarsi Merry Hemelda tested tomato monocropping, sunflower monocropping, and an alternating 1:1 sunflower–tomato intercrop in raised beds in South Jakarta. Their 2025 paper reports a 13-week, simultaneous-transplanting trial conducted in 2020, with two replications per treatment. The intercrop suppressed weeds and reduced pest and disease incidence, but sunflower yields were significantly lower than in sunflower monocropping. Its Land Equivalent Ratio was 0.65; in the authors’ experiment, a value below one indicated greater land productivity under monocropping. They attributed the result in part to belowground competition and rhizosphere interactions, with tomatoes dominating the system. These are findings from one location, season, and small experiment—not predictions for every home garden. Read the study.

The authors’ practical qualification is important: “Therefore, sunflower and tomato plants can be effectively intercropped, provided that planting times are staggered to minimize competition and aggressiveness between species.” That supports trying a carefully planned arrangement, not planting sunflowers tightly alongside tomatoes and assuming both will thrive.

Five reasons gardeners might try the pairing

1. The intercrop suppressed weeds in one tomato trial

The South Jakarta experiment reported weed suppression in its sunflower–tomato treatment. That makes weed competition a plausible reason to test the pairing, but the study does not establish that sunflowers replace mulch, cultivation, or routine weeding in other gardens. Check the soil around both crops and manage weeds as needed.

2. Sunflower can be part of a targeted trap-crop plan

UF/IFAS Extension recommends a specific approach for leaf-footed bugs: plant sunflower and sorghum about two weeks before tomatoes so sunflower heads can attract the bugs away from developing tomato fruit. The guidance also recommends hand-picking adults and nymphs from the sunflower heads. This is a two-plant trap-crop tactic that requires monitoring; it is not evidence that sunflower alone repels pests or reliably protects tomatoes. See UF/IFAS’s trap-crop guidance.

3. Flowers may support beneficial insects, with limits

Flowering plants can offer nectar, pollen, or prey to beneficial insects. UF/IFAS describes minute pirate bugs building to high numbers in sunflower, and reports that perimeter sunflowers in pepper fields increased those predators and helped suppress western flower thrips. That is evidence from pepper, not proof of the same effect on tomatoes. Attracting beneficial insects does not guarantee they will reach your tomato plants or control a pest there. Read the UF/IFAS discussion of crop diversity and pest management.

  • Packaged in the USA by a family owned and operated company since 1968

4. Plant diversity may make host-finding harder for some pests

A mixed planting can complicate the visual or scent cues pests use to locate host plants. The University of Delaware Cooperative Extension describes this as a general mechanism of garden diversity; it does not establish that adding sunflowers specifically will reduce tomato pests. Treat diversity as one part of a garden plan, not as a stand-alone control. Read the extension guidance.

5. Sunflowers add height and flowers

If your goal includes a vertical flowering element, sunflowers can provide one. But the sources reviewed do not show that sunflower height or flowers improve tomato yield, pollination, or fruit quality in a typical home garden. Height can also mean shade: consider where the sun will fall as the plants grow, and whether the sunflower will compete with tomatoes for light, water, or nutrients.

Could sunflowers harm nearby tomatoes?

Possibly, depending on the plants and conditions. An Ask Extension response dated January 12, 2024, notes that sunflowers contain sesquiterpene lactones and lists tomato among plants that may not do well as sunflower neighbors. That response is a caution, not a controlled compatibility test. The South Jakarta study shows that tomatoes and sunflowers can coexist in at least one experimental arrangement, while also identifying competition as a key limitation. The evidence does not establish that sunflowers poison every nearby tomato, or that allelopathy is irrelevant. Read the Ask Extension response.

How to choose a layout

No universally optimal spacing or sunflower cultivar is established by the sources cited here. Choose a layout around your goal and the space available, then watch how the crops respond.

  • 12 ounce bag of organic roasted sunflower kernels
  • No salt added for pure flavor
  • USDA certified organic
  • Perfect for snacking or baking
  • Excellent source of protein
  • For a trap-crop attempt: follow the UF/IFAS arrangement, planting sunflower and sorghum about two weeks before tomatoes, and inspect the sunflower heads for leaf-footed bugs.
  • For a flower or diversity border: place sunflowers at a bed edge or perimeter rather than automatically inserting them into the tomato row. This makes it easier to observe shade and competition and is consistent with the perimeter arrangement described in UF/IFAS’s pepper-field example.
  • For an intercrop: stagger planting rather than transplanting both crops together. The tomato–sunflower study identifies staggered timing as a way to minimize competition, but it does not supply a home-garden spacing formula.
  • For any layout: account for mature height, sunlight, root room, and water access. Monitor tomato growth and adjust the arrangement if the sunflower shades or crowds the tomatoes.

How to assess whether it is working

Decide in advance what you want the sunflower to do—provide flowers, serve as part of a trap-crop plan, add planting diversity, or occupy a separate edge of the bed. Then check for the outcome that matters to you: weeds beneath the planting, leaf-footed bugs on the sunflower heads and tomatoes, beneficial insects, or visible shading and competition. Keep ordinary tomato care and pest inspection in place; the available evidence does not justify treating a sunflower as a substitute for either.
