5 Fruits and Vegetables That Look Nothing Like Their Wild Relatives

Maize, carrots, bananas, watermelon, and eggplant show how domestication reshaped crops—and why some familiar before-and-after stories need qualification.

People have reshaped crops over many generations through domestication and selective breeding. Some changes are striking: maize came from a wild grass, cultivated bananas are seedless, and carrots have not always been orange. But familiar before-and-after stories can oversimplify what scientists know—especially when a wild relative is mistaken for a crop’s direct ancestor.

The available evidence supports five examples, not six. Rather than inventing a sixth, this guide separates well-established changes from histories that remain uncertain.

How crops changed—and what “wild” means

Domestication and selective breeding altered traits people valued, such as edible parts, flavor, color, and ease of harvesting. Crop improvement includes methods from long-term selection to newer techniques; it is not synonymous with modern genetic engineering. The National Academies’ overview of genetically engineered crops describes the broader history of genetic improvement in agriculture.

A wild relative is not automatically the exact ancestor of a modern crop. Nor does a dramatic illustration prove a particular transformation: comparisons depend on correctly identifying the species, cultivar, and image. The examples below show both visible changes and the limits of simple origin stories.

Maize: from teosinte to a harvestable crop

What changed

Maize (corn) was domesticated from teosinte, a wild grass. Archaeological evidence indicates that people in what is now southwestern Mexico began domesticating it as early as 9,000 years ago. The ancestor identified in a peer-reviewed review is Zea mays ssp. parviglumis, not simply any grass that resembles corn.

Domestication changed the plant’s reproductive structure and made its grain more useful and accessible for harvest. The contrast is a good example of a crop transformed over a long period, rather than a sudden switch to a modern-looking ear. See UC Davis’s history of maize domestication and the Annals of Botany review.

Carrots: orange is only one chapter

White wild roots and early cultivated colors

Wild carrots are white, according to UC Davis. Early domesticated carrots included purple and yellow forms; orange types were reported in the Netherlands and adjoining regions in the 1700s, according to the USDA’s account of carrot history.

The popular story that Dutch growers created orange carrots specifically to honor the House of Orange is not established by these university and government sources. The defensible point is simpler: carrot color varied, and orange became familiar later. UC Davis explains carrot color and history; the USDA carrot-history account covers the appearance of orange types.

Bananas: cultivated fruit without hard seeds

Seedlessness and fruit development

Cultivated bananas and plantains are described in a peer-reviewed review as seedless and parthenocarpic: their fruit develops without fertilization. Their wild relatives, by contrast, have seeds. Farmers selected for traits including seedlessness and fruit quality, making edible fruit easier to eat.

There is no single settled wild ancestor that explains every modern edible banana cultivar. Banana ancestry is complex, so a picture of one wild banana should not be presented as the universal “before” version of all cultivated bananas. The seedlessness comparison and selection traits are discussed in the Annals of Botany review on banana domestication.

Watermelon: a sweet crop with an unsettled origin story

What is known—and what remains debated

Kew says watermelon’s African origin is broadly accepted, but the precise place where people domesticated it from a bitter wild fruit into a sweet one remains debated. DNA evidence points to the Kordofan melon as the closest relative of cultivated watermelon, while ancient depictions show watermelon being consumed in the Nile Valley.

One often-confused piece of evidence concerns seeds found at an archaeological site in Libya. Kew’s account identifies them as belonging to egusi watermelon, a related species grown for its seeds. Its raw flesh is bitter and inedible because it contains cucurbitacin. That is not proof that cultivated watermelon itself once looked exactly like egusi, or that the precise domestication route is known. See Kew’s account of watermelon origins and its report on ancient watermelon seeds.

Eggplant: cultivated forms can look surprisingly different

A range of fruit shapes, not one proven before-and-after

A peer-reviewed study discusses cultivated eggplant accessions known as Solanum ovigerum, which bear small, usually white, egg-shaped fruits. It also examines domestication-related traits including fruit size, shape, color, and seed shattering.

This is evidence that cultivated eggplant includes forms quite unlike the large, dark-purple fruit familiar in many markets. It does not, by itself, establish a simple universal sequence in which one specific ancestor became today’s typical eggplant. For the traits and accessions described, see the study in Molecular Biology and Evolution.

Why “before and after” crop images need context

  • Check the name: A wild relative may be related to a crop without being its direct ancestor.
  • Check the trait: A crop’s history may involve seedlessness, color, shape, or harvestability, not a single dramatic visual change.
  • Check the claim: If domestication location or ancestry is debated, an image cannot settle it.
  • Check the comparison: Species, cultivar, and image provenance matter when judging whether two pictures show a meaningful before-and-after.
