Fairy lights can add a soft decorative glow to a backyard when they’re placed to suit the garden’s existing features. Try them between trees, within shrubs, along a walkway or fence, across a trellis, or above a patio. The Home Depot’s “How to Hang Outdoor String Lights” project guide, published February 19, 2026, notes that hanging string or fairy lights can enhance a backyard, patio, or deck.
Six ways to place fairy lights in your backyard
1. Drape a gentle line between trees
Use suitable branches as natural supports and let the strand fall in a relaxed curve. Before hanging it, check that the branches can support the installation and that your light manufacturer permits this use. For longer spans, a guide wire can help support the lights without putting all the tension on the strand.

2. Add a small glow to shrubs
Weave or drape a lightweight string through shrubs to create points of light within a planting bed. Arrange the strand and its power connections as the product instructions specify, and avoid pulling it tight against branches.

Place lights along the edge of a path to mark its line and add a decorative boundary. Delicate fairy lights are for atmosphere, not dependable task or safety lighting; use appropriate outdoor lighting where people need to see steps, changes in level, or the walking surface.

4. Outline a fence or railing
Drape a strand along a fence or railing for a simple perimeter effect. Choose mounting materials suited to the structure and outdoor exposure, and leave enough slack that the strand and its anchors are not overstretched.
5. Dress an arbor or trellis
Run lights over an arbor or trellis to frame a garden entrance or seating area. Follow the structure’s contours, securing the strand at suitable points rather than using tension to hold it in place.

6. Create a patio canopy
Above a patio, arrange lights around the perimeter, in a zigzag, or as a canopy or grid. The best layout depends on the space and how much of it you want to cover. Philips Hue’s outdoor string-light guidance describes these patterns and recommends secure anchors; don’t overstretch the strand.
Choose lights and mounting materials for the location
Before buying, compare the product’s weather rating with the conditions where it will hang, along with its power source, strand length, light color or style, and the mounting materials your layout requires. Product ratings and suitable uses vary. For permanent, year-round outdoor installation, Feit Electric advises checking the packaging for a wet-location rating; Philips Hue likewise recommends checking weatherproof ratings.

Solar lights can work where the installation gets ample sun. The Home Depot’s buying guide says solar-powered lighting needs plenty of sunlight and gives six to eight hours as its guidance; that figure is not a universal requirement for every solar model.

Plan the installation before hanging
- Map the route and measure it. Decide where the lights will go and measure the span before choosing a strand. Leave room for a natural drape instead of stretching the lights to meet the endpoints.
- Choose suitable supports. Philips Hue lists stainless steel screw hooks, cable ties, and guide wires as possible materials. For a longer span, it recommends a tensioned guide wire to support the installation.
- Check the connection limit. Feit Electric says the maximum number of strands that can be connected depends on the product. Consult its packaging rather than assuming strands can be joined indefinitely.
- Follow the product’s outdoor power instructions. Feit advises using a covered GFCI outlet with its outdoor string lights. Follow the instructions for the specific product you install; this is manufacturer guidance, not a universal electrical-code statement.
- Keep the lights uncovered unless instructed otherwise. Feit says not to cover its product with cloth, paper, or material not supplied with it. Check your own lights’ instructions before adding any covering.
