Lettuce, spinach, carrots, radishes, peppers, and tomatoes can all grow in bags when you match the container to the crop and keep the potting mix evenly moist. For most growers, leafy greens and radishes are the easiest fit for smaller bags; carrots need enough depth for the variety, while peppers and tomatoes need more room and, often, support. These are practical choices—not a trial-based ranking of yield or flavor.

Which vegetables grow well in bags?

Grow-bag suitability depends on the bag’s usable volume, depth, drainage, and the variety you plant. The measurements below are examples from University of Illinois Extension guidance, not universal minimums: bag shape and cultivar can change what fits. Follow the seed packet for spacing and local planting timing.

Vegetable Container guidance What to plan for
Lettuce Illinois Extension lists leaf lettuce in a one-gallon container as an example. A separate small-space recommendation calls for a top diameter over 10 inches for leafy greens. (Extension container guide; small-space guide) Choose a suitable plant count and keep the mix consistently moist without saturating it. Named examples include ‘Green Ice,’ ‘Salad Bowl,’ ‘Red Sails,’ ‘Black Seeded Simpson,’ ‘Buttercrunch,’ and ‘Oakleaf.’
Spinach A one-gallon container is one Extension example; seedlings are thinned to 1–2 inches apart in that table. (Extension container guide) Direct-sow seeds. Planting time is location-dependent because spinach is a cool-season crop. (small-space guide)
Carrots Two gallons is an Extension example; a separate recommendation gives a minimum top diameter over 12 inches. (Extension container guide; small-space guide) Match bag depth to the selected carrot type. If depth or volume is limited, choose a shorter-root or half-long variety.
Radishes Two gallons is an Extension example, with seedlings thinned to 1–2 inches apart; another recommendation calls for a minimum top diameter over 10 inches. (Extension container guide; small-space guide) The compact roots make radishes a useful choice where space is limited. Thin seedlings as directed so roots have room to develop.
Peppers Extension gives two pepper plants in a two-gallon container as one example, while its small-space guidance recommends a minimum top diameter over 16 inches. These are different setups, not interchangeable guarantees. (Extension container guide; small-space guide) Give peppers more space than leafy greens where possible, and use the larger, crop-appropriate bag for the plant count and variety.
Tomatoes Extension lists one standard tomato in three gallons, or one cherry or patio tomato in one gallon, as examples. Its separate small-space recommendation is a minimum top diameter over 20 inches. (Extension container guide; small-space guide) Choose a compact, patio, or dwarf type if space is tight; ‘Micro Tom’ is one named compact option. Plan for support as the plant grows.

Potatoes are another container-suitable option, and Extension names ‘Huckleberry’ and ‘Magic Molly’ as compact or container-friendly examples. The cited guidance does not give a crop-specific bag-volume recommendation for potatoes, so choose a container based on the cultivar’s requirements rather than assuming the examples above apply. How to choose a grow-bag size

Start with the plant’s roots and mature habit, then check both the bag’s depth and its usable volume. A bag’s stated gallon capacity alone does not tell you its top diameter or growing depth, so compare its actual dimensions with the crop’s needs. University of Illinois Extension’s small-space recommendations give these minimum top diameters:

  • Peppers: over 16 inches.
  • Carrots: over 12 inches.
  • Radishes and leafy greens: over 10 inches.

Those are crop recommendations, not guarantees that every bag with the same diameter will work. Extension’s 2021 examples pair a 10-inch pot with 3 gallons of soil, a 12-inch pot with 5 gallons, a 14-inch pot with 7 gallons, a 16-inch pot with 10 gallons, an 18-inch pot with 15 gallons, a 24-inch pot with 25 gallons, and a 30-inch pot with 30 gallons. A fabric bag’s shape can differ from a rigid pot, so treat these as a sizing reference rather than an exact conversion. (University of Illinois Extension, 2021)

Fabric grow bags are one container option, but the label matters less than adequate root room, sound drainage, and safe materials. Use a bag made for growing plants and avoid containers containing chemicals toxic to plants or people. (University of Illinois Extension on container gardening; small-space guide)

How to plant vegetables in bags

  1. Choose the crop and bag together. Check the selected variety’s mature size and root depth, then compare those needs with the bag’s dimensions and capacity.
  2. Use potting mix, not garden soil. Container mix is suited to growing in a pot or bag. Check its label to see whether fertilizer is included. (University of Illinois Extension container guide)
  3. Set up drainage and support. Make sure water can drain from the bottom. For tomatoes or other plants that climb or spread, install a stake before filling the bag, or fit a cage around a seedling; tie growing stems to a stake as needed. Match the support to the variety and the bag’s stability. (University of Illinois Extension container guide)
  4. Plant at the packet’s depth and spacing. Sow seeds according to the instructions for that crop and variety, and thin seedlings where directed. Water immediately after planting. (University of Illinois Extension container guide)
  5. Place the bag for suitable light. Extension defines full sun as at least six hours and partial shade as four to six hours. Check the selected crop’s needs and your local conditions. (University of Illinois Extension container guide)

How to water and feed bag-grown vegetables

Check the mix rather than following a fixed daily watering schedule. Bags have limited soil volume and can dry quickly; how often they need water depends on weather, location, bag material and size, crop, and plant stage. Fabric, clay, and unglazed ceramic containers dry faster than plastic or glazed pots, according to Illinois Extension. (University of Illinois Extension on watering containers)

When watering, wet the mix thoroughly until water drains from the bottom, then let the excess escape. Do not let the mix dry completely or leave it waterlogged. As Extension horticulture educator Andrew Holsinger put it in a June 17, 2020 release, “Proper drainage is just as important as the amount of water added to the container.” (University of Illinois Extension, June 17, 2020)

Check whether the potting mix already contains fertilizer and follow its label. If it does not, use a fertilizer appropriate for vegetables and follow its directions; Illinois Extension recommends slow-release vegetable fertilizer as a general container-gardening practice. The right feeding plan depends on the mix and crop, so do not assume every bag needs the same schedule. (University of Illinois Extension container guide; container gardening guidance)
