5 Best Fertilizers for Lettuce: How to Choose for Your Garden

Choose lettuce fertilizer by soil-test results, not a one-size-fits-all ranking. See when 5-10-10, calcium nitrate, low-phosphorus fertilizer, or compost may fit.

The best fertilizer for lettuce is the one that supplies nutrients your soil actually lacks. Start with a soil test, then match fertilizer to its recommendations. If you have no test, Clemson Cooperative Extension offers 5-10-10 as a regional preplant option for home gardens—not a universal rate. These five choices serve different needs; they are not a tested ranking of retail products.

What is the best fertilizer for lettuce?

A soil-test-matched fertilizer is the best starting point because it accounts for existing nutrients and soil conditions. Use the test’s recommendations rather than automatically adding phosphorus or potassium. NC State Extension cautions that excess phosphorus and potassium do not improve yield and may increase environmental risk (NC State Extension: Lettuce Production in North Carolina).

Before choosing a product, check soil pH as well. Clemson Cooperative Extension advises maintaining lettuce soil at pH 6.0–6.5 according to soil-test results; if lime is needed, apply it at least three months before planting (Clemson Cooperative Extension: Lettuce).

Five fertilizer and soil-amendment choices, by use case

  1. Soil-test-matched fertilizer: best when you have test results

Choose a fertilizer that supplies the nutrients indicated by the test. Do not add phosphorus or potassium unless the results call for them. This is the most tailored option, but the right formulation and rate depend on your soil and local recommendations.

  2. 5-10-10 granular fertilizer: a conditional preplant fallback

If you have not tested the soil, Clemson Cooperative Extension gives 5-10-10 at 3 pounds per 100 square feet before planting as a home-garden recommendation. This guidance is regional, not a universal prescription: follow local extension advice and the product label. A soil test may show that this phosphorus- and potassium-containing formulation is unnecessary.

  3. Calcium nitrate (15-0-0): a nitrogen sidedress option

Clemson Cooperative Extension lists calcium nitrate at 2 pounds per 100 feet of row as a home-garden sidedress, once during the growing season. Sandy soil or excessive rain may call for more frequent sidedressing under its guidance. Keep fertilizer off lettuce stems and water after sidedressing, as UC IPM advises (UC IPM: Lettuce).

This nitrogen fertilizer is not a guaranteed tipburn remedy. Tipburn has multiple possible contributors, including drought and uneven moisture.

  4. Low- or no-phosphorus fertilizer: when soil results do not call for P

If your soil test shows no need for additional phosphorus, choose a low- or no-phosphorus fertilizer that meets any other indicated nutrient needs. Minnesota Extension recommends this approach unless the soil test specifically calls for phosphorus (Minnesota Extension: Growing lettuce).

  5. Compost or well-rotted manure: a soil amendment, not an N-P-K substitute

Compost and well-rotted manure can improve soil, but they are amendments rather than interchangeable granular fertilizers. Account for the nutrients they contribute when planning fertilizer. Minnesota Extension advises against fresh manure, which may contain harmful bacteria and can increase weed problems.

When should you fertilize lettuce?

For a home garden, apply a preplant fertilizer only when a soil test or appropriate local guidance supports it. If sidedressing is recommended, keep it away from plant stems and water afterward. Lettuce grows quickly, so adequate, uninterrupted growth matters, but excessive nitrogen can harm quality.

NC State Extension describes commercial North Carolina lettuce nitrogen requirements of 80–120 pounds of nitrogen per acre, varying by lettuce type, soil texture, and production system. Its commercial guidance uses split applications, with some nitrogen preplant and one or more sidedress applications during early crop development. Those acreage rates are not home-garden rates and should not be converted directly to a garden bed.

Can I use 10-10-10 on lettuce?

Possibly, but only if its nutrient balance and label rate suit your soil and local recommendations. A 10-10-10 product includes phosphorus and potassium; if a soil test does not call for either nutrient, adding them simply because they are in the bag is not justified. Do not treat 10-10-10 as automatically better—or equivalent to the cited 5-10-10 preplant recommendation.

How to avoid overfertilizing and tipburn

  • Base phosphorus and potassium on a soil test. Excess amounts offer no yield benefit and may increase environmental risk.
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen. NC State Extension notes it can increase tipburn risk, reduce head quality, and contribute to nutrient leaching.
  • Keep moisture consistent. Clemson Cooperative Extension identifies drought and inconsistent moisture as especially significant tipburn contributors; high temperatures, wind, ammoniacal nitrogen forms, and rapid growth may also contribute.
  • Keep sidedress fertilizer off stems and water it in. This follows UC IPM cultural guidance.

Fertilizer recommendations are not interchangeable across regions or production systems. For example, UF/IFAS recommendations for crisphead lettuce on Florida organic soils are soil-test-based, and the guidance warns that excessive potassium—especially when banded—can cause salt damage (UF/IFAS: Lettuce Production in Florida). Use advice for your soil type and region rather than transferring commercial acreage tables or recommendations from another state to a home bed.
