There is no single best fertilizer for every tree or shrub—and a healthy plant that is growing acceptably may not need any fertilizer at all. If a plant is struggling, check soil and growing conditions before treating it with nutrients: root, water, pest, disease, and soil problems can cause overlapping symptoms. When a soil test or local recommendation confirms a need, choose a product whose guaranteed analysis fits that need; a slow-release nitrogen source is a useful category to consider, not a reason to fertilize by default.

Does your tree or shrub need fertilizer?

Start with the plant, not a product list. UNH Cooperative Extension puts the threshold plainly: “As long as a tree or shrub appears healthy and is growing at an acceptable rate, there is no need to give it any additional fertilizer.” UNH Cooperative Extension identifies Cathy Neal as an Extension Professor and Specialist in nursery and landscape horticulture.

If growth or appearance is poor, fertilizer may not address the cause. Root damage, improper watering, pests, disease, and soil conditions can produce symptoms that resemble nutrient deficiencies. Where practical, get a soil test and use its results—along with local extension guidance and the plant’s needs—to decide whether to fertilize and which nutrients are appropriate. UMass Extension recommends complete fertilizer for trees and shrubs only when soil or tissue testing demonstrates a need. UMass Extension

How to choose the right fertilizer

The useful question is not which brand is universally best, but which labeled formula matches the site’s demonstrated need. Check the product’s guaranteed analysis and instructions before buying or applying it.

Match the analysis to the soil-test recommendation

Compare the guaranteed analysis with the nutrients identified as needed. Do not assume that every tree or shrub needs a complete N-P-K fertilizer, or that phosphorus and potassium should be added automatically. UMass Extension advises using complete fertilizer only when soil or tissue testing demonstrates a need. UMass Extension

Consider nitrogen release

When fertilization is warranted, slow-release or water-insoluble nitrogen is a reasonable feature to look for. UNH Cooperative Extension advises checking the label for water-insoluble or slow-release nitrogen. Virginia Tech distinguishes among fertilizer types, reinforcing the need to consider how the product supplies nutrients rather than choosing by package claims alone. Fit the product to the plant, site, and label

Species, plant condition, soil, timing, and proximity to water all matter. Read the label for the permitted application method, rate, and area covered, and follow local recommendations where they differ. A search for “slow-release tree and shrub fertilizer” describes a product category, not an endorsement of a particular brand or formulation.

When should you fertilize?

Timing depends on plant and region; do not treat one calendar as universal. For established plants, UNH Cooperative Extension describes applying in spring before growth begins or waiting until mid-summer after shoot growth ceases. It cautions that high nitrogen in late summer can prompt a new flush of growth that is vulnerable to early frost damage. Its fact sheet also notes that fall fertilization can be beneficial in some circumstances. Follow local extension advice for your climate and plant. UNH Cooperative Extension

How to apply fertilizer safely

  1. Use a justified rate. Base the amount on the soil-test recommendation or applicable product label; do not apply more in hopes of speeding growth.
  2. Apply over the root area. Virginia Tech says broadcasting the desired fertilizer over the soil above tree and shrub roots and watering it in is usually adequate. Follow the label for the product-specific method and treated area. Virginia Cooperative Extension
  3. Water it in when directed. Use the label’s directions and avoid washing fertilizer off the intended area.
  4. Keep granules off pavement. Fertilizer on hard surfaces can be carried by runoff toward waterways. Excess fertilizer can also injure plants and contribute to water pollution. University of Maryland Extension

Could mulch or compost be a better choice?

Recycling leaves as mulch can return nutrients gradually as they decompose. Maryland Extension says shredded leaves provide slow nutrient release and that compost may be used, with its guidance limiting compost to a one-inch layer. This is Maryland-specific advice; check local extension guidance before applying compost elsewhere. University of Maryland Extension
