SimpliSafe is the best affordable home security system for most U.S. households. It combines DIY installation, optional professional monitoring, broad alarm coverage, and no long-term contract. Choose Ring Alarm if you already use Alexa or Ring cameras, Cove if low-cost professional monitoring matters most, abode for smart-home flexibility, and ADT Blu if you want DIY equipment backed by ADT monitoring.
“Affordable” should mean more than a low starter-kit price. Equipment, installation, monitoring, camera storage, cellular backup, taxes, promotions, and cancellation terms all affect the three-year cost.

How to compare the real cost
Compare equivalent protection, not a bare hub-and-sensor kit with a package containing cameras, smoke detection, cellular backup, and professional response.
Three-year cost = equipment + installation + 36 months of monitoring + required camera-storage fees − verified discounts.
Use four separate numbers:
- Starter equipment price: the advertised entry kit.
- Realistic small-home price: a hub, keypad, exterior-door sensors, accessible-window sensors, a motion sensor, and any life-safety devices you actually need.
- Monitoring price: self-monitoring, video-only service, alarm-capable service, and professional monitoring are different products.
- Three-year ownership cost: the most useful figure when comparing subscriptions.
An illustrative $250 system with $22.99 monthly monitoring costs about $1,078 over three years before tax, shipping, cameras, installation, or promotions. That is not a quote for any particular configuration; it shows why monthly fees can outweigh the starter-kit price.

Best for: homeowners and renters who want a straightforward, complete alarm platform without a long-term contract.
SimpliSafe is the safest general recommendation because its core proposition is clear: buy the equipment, install it yourself, and add monthly monitoring if you want professional response. Its applicable plans support intrusion, fire, medical, water, and temperature-related alarms. SimpliSafe says its monitoring plans are billed monthly without contracts or hidden fees; its support page, updated June 24, 2026, lists a Pro Plus tier at $79.99 per month. Self-monitoring is also available, although features vary by plan. See the current SimpliSafe plan details.
Why it stands out
- DIY setup suits renters and first-time buyers.
- Optional monitoring avoids forcing every customer into a contract.
- The product range covers more than cameras, including life-safety and environmental sensors.
- It is easier to price as an alarm system than a camera subscription with a siren.
Trade-offs
SimpliSafe is not automatically the cheapest over three years. Monitoring can cost more than entry-level alternatives, and advanced video features may add recurring expense. Camera-first shoppers may find another ecosystem more economical if they need several cameras and long event histories.
Skip it if: your main priority is the lowest possible recurring price or a broad smart-home automation platform.

Ring often has one of the lowest practical entry costs among major DIY systems. Its value improves when you already own Ring devices and can use one subscription for the features you need. However, the total price depends on the number of cameras, recording history, detection features, and whether you want professional alarm monitoring. Ring’s official plans page identifies the Ring Protect Pro plan as the relevant tier for professional monitoring of Ring Alarm. Check Ring’s current plan page rather than relying on older $10-per-month references.
Why it stands out
- Low-cost hardware ecosystem with many accessories.
- Good fit for Alexa households and existing Ring-camera owners.
- Can be economical when alarm and camera needs are combined under the appropriate plan.
Trade-offs
Ring’s app features and professional monitoring depend on current subscription terms. Its strongest advantages also create ecosystem dependence, and buyers should review account-security and data-privacy settings before installing cameras.
Choose it if: you already use Ring cameras or Alexa and want the lowest-cost path to an integrated setup.
3. Cove: best for low-cost professional monitoring
Best for: buyers who place a low professional-monitoring bill above ecosystem breadth.
2026 comparison coverage identifies Cove as one of the least expensive professionally monitored choices, with one comparison listing monitoring around $22.99 per month and some coverage showing lower introductory figures. Exact equipment bundles, current checkout pricing, cancellation terms, and camera limitations should be verified directly at Cove.
Why it stands out
Cove deserves consideration when the buyer wants a conventional alarm workflow with professional monitoring without immediately moving to a higher-priced brand. Its appeal is primarily cost-focused.
Trade-offs
It has a smaller smart-home and camera proposition than Ring, and the lowest advertised monitoring figure may not describe the exact plan or promotion available to you. Do not assume that a lower fee means better equipment, app quality, or emergency response.

- Solar Powered, Once Install and Works Forever: Built-in solar panel keeps the battery charged, 3 hours of sunlight daily keeps it running, even on rainy and cloud days. Install in any location just drill 3 holes, 5 minutes.
- 360° Coverage & Auto Motion Tracking: Pan & Tilt outdoor camera wireless provides all-around security. No blind spots. Activities within the target area will be automatically tracked and recorded by the camera.
- 2K Resolution, Day and Night Clarity: Capture every event that occurs around your home in 3MP resolution. More than just daytime, 4 LED lights increase the light source by 100% compared to 2 LED lights, allowing more to be seen for excellent color night vision.
4. abode: best for smart-home integration
Best for: technically inclined households that want an alarm system to double as a home-automation hub.
abode is the specialist pick for flexible sensors, automation, and smart-home participation. One 2026 comparison listed a configuration at about $245.99 for equipment and about $26.99 per month for monitoring. Treat those as dated comparison signals, not current quotes. Verify the exact support for Apple Home, Alexa, Google, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, cameras, and monitoring before purchase at abode’s official site.
Why it stands out
- More compelling for automation than a basic alarm-only platform.
- Flexible sensor and smart-device positioning.
- Suitable for households that value integration more than the absolute lowest price.
Trade-offs
Monitoring and equipment may cost more than the cheapest DIY alternatives, and the camera experience is not its clearest advantage. More flexibility can also mean more setup decisions and troubleshooting.
Choose it if: automation and compatibility are central requirements, particularly if you have verified support for your existing devices.
5. ADT Blu: best ADT-backed DIY option
Best for: buyers who want to install the equipment themselves but prefer ADT’s professional-monitoring brand.
ADT describes Blu as self-installable, cancel-anytime, and available with self-monitoring or professional monitoring. ADT’s displayed plan pricing includes Video Connect at $9.99 per month, Self-Protect with a system at $14.99 per month, and Pro-Protect with video at $34.99 per month. A listed Video Essentials Kit was $339 plus $34.99 per month; a Total Safety Kit was listed at $699 plus $37.99 per month. See ADT’s Blu monitoring comparison and the displayed Video Essentials configuration.
Why it stands out
- DIY setup through the ADT+ app without heavy-duty tools.
- Professional monitoring from a recognized security company.
- ADT says Blu can send alarm events over cellular data or SMS when Wi-Fi is disconnected, but the published material ties this capability to the Pro-Protect plan.
- No long-term contract positioning, with the ability to cancel or change plans.
Trade-offs
Equipment costs more upfront than the cheapest DIY options. The most useful features require a paid tier, and promotions—such as advertised discounts or a free first month—require activation and other terms. Blu is a lower-complexity alternative to traditional installed ADT, not necessarily the cheapest system.

Professional monitoring: when is it worth paying for?
Self-monitoring sends alerts to you; you decide whether to call a neighbor or emergency services. Professional monitoring sends alarm signals to a monitoring center that follows its response protocol. Video verification or live-agent intervention may add camera review or human intervention before an emergency call.
Professional monitoring can be worthwhile when nobody is reliably available to respond to alerts, when the household needs medical or life-safety coverage, or when a formal response workflow is more reassuring than app notifications. It is less compelling if you can respond yourself and mainly want cameras.
Monitoring is not a guarantee that police, fire, or medical personnel will be dispatched or arrive within a particular time. Local verification rules, alarm permits, false-alarm policies, cellular and internet availability, dispatch procedures, and the event itself all matter. ADT says its Pro-Protect plan allows ADT professionals to contact emergency services after an alarm, while SimpliSafe describes emergency dispatch on qualifying plans. Those are service descriptions, not guarantees of local response.

What a small home actually needs
Start with the vulnerable openings and the household’s real risks rather than buying the largest bundle.
- Base station or hub
- Keypad or dependable app control
- One sensor for every exterior door
- Sensors for accessible ground-floor windows
- One motion sensor covering the main passage
- Interior siren
- Smoke and carbon-monoxide detection if life-safety coverage matters
- Doorbell or camera for visitors and packages
- Water sensor near a washing machine, water heater, basement, or other leak risk
Door and window sensors are usually more predictable for pet owners than extensive motion coverage. Motion sensors can be affected by pet size, jumping, furniture, and placement; follow the manufacturer’s pet guidance rather than trusting a generic “pet immune” label.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.DIY installation, outages, and portability
DIY systems are usually adhesive- or screw-mounted and can be removed when you move. Adhesive mounts are convenient but can fail on dusty, damp, textured, or poorly prepared surfaces. A renter should confirm whether drilling is allowed, whether an exterior camera is permitted, and whether a doorbell can record a shared hallway.
Place entry sensors on doors and windows that are actually used or accessible. Aim motion sensors across a path rather than directly at a window, and avoid pointing cameras at bright windows. Test every sensor in the app and label rooms accurately.

Before buying, identify what survives each outage:
- Power outage: Does the hub have battery backup?
- Wi-Fi outage: Can the alarm signal still reach the monitoring center?
- Internet outage: Cameras may lose remote access even while the alarm hub continues working.
- Cellular backup: Is it included, and does it require a particular paid plan?
- Camera outage: Does recording require internet, cloud service, or local storage?
ADT’s published Blu material specifically describes cellular data or SMS alarm communication after Wi-Fi loss, subject to the Pro-Protect plan and equipment requirements. Do not generalize that capability to every plan or every brand.
Best Value
- 100% Wireless Solar & Battery Powered: Enjoy true wireless installation with no outlets or messy cables. The detachable solar panel keeps your outdoor camera charged daily, 2 hours of daily sunlight to maintain 24/7 operation. while the built-in backup battery ensures reliable protection during cloudy days or bad weather.

- 360° Pan-Tilt Coverage & IP65 Weatherproof: Remotely pan, tilt, and zoom through the app to monitor every corner of your property. Built with an IP65 waterproof rating, this wireless outdoor camera performs reliably in rain, snow, dust, and extreme temperatures year-round.
- Smart Human Detection & Real-Time Two-Way Talk: Advanced PIR + AI human detection accurately identifies people—not just motion—reducing false alerts from animals or moving objects. Receive instant notifications and speak directly through two-way audio to greet visitors or deter unwanted activity from anywhere.
- Flexible Storage Options & Alexa Compatible: Choose local 15x11x1mm MicroSD card recording (card not included) or optional cloud storage with no forced subscription. Easily view live feeds or play back recordings using Alexa voice commands for hands-free home monitoring.
Cameras, subscriptions, and privacy
A camera system is not automatically a complete alarm system. Compare live viewing with recorded history, local storage with cloud storage, person/package/vehicle detection, retention length, and the number of cameras covered by a plan.
Also check two-factor authentication, account-sharing controls, privacy modes or shutters for indoor cameras, data-retention policies, and whether cameras remain useful during an internet outage. A subscription-free camera may still provide live view or local recording while lacking cloud history, AI detection, cellular backup, or emergency dispatch.
Renters, pets, and special cases
- Renters: prioritize adhesive, portable equipment and confirm rules for exterior cameras, shared corridors, sirens, and Wi-Fi installation.
- Rural homes: verify cellular coverage before relying on cellular backup.
- Older adults: consider professional monitoring or panic pendants if rapid assistance is important.
- Pet owners: use door/window sensors and carefully positioned motion sensors; test false-alarm behavior.
- Apple-focused homes: consider abode only after verifying current compatibility.
- Existing wired alarms: investigate retrofit compatibility before replacing usable sensors.
- Life-safety buyers: compare smoke, CO, flood, temperature, and medical coverage—not burglary prices alone.
Contract, cancellation, and ownership checklist
“No contract” does not mean “no obligations.” Before checkout, verify:
- Month-to-month versus annual or multiyear billing
- Equipment financing and early-termination charges
- Return window, restocking fees, and return shipping
- Whether monitoring can be canceled while equipment remains usable
- Whether equipment is locked to the vendor
- Whether moving requires reactivation or professional installation
- Whether a promotion requires activation within a specific period
- Taxes, shipping, local permit fees, and any installation charge
Alternatives worth considering
Wyze can be attractive for very low-cost cameras, but distinguish camera monitoring from a complete alarm service and verify cellular-backup assumptions. SafeWise’s Wyze coverage discusses its low-cost positioning.
Eufy may appeal to subscription-conscious camera buyers who prefer local storage. Evaluate privacy, remote access, and the absence or limitation of professional emergency monitoring; see Security.org’s no-monthly-fee comparison.
Frontpoint is worth comparing for a more traditional monitored-security experience, but check current equipment, monitoring, and contract terms. Traditional ADT may make sense when professional installation or a broader installed package matters more than low cost; its terms differ from Blu. A local alarm company may offer hardwired systems, retrofit support, or local service, but requires a quote and careful contract review.
How these recommendations were judged
This is a U.S.-focused, research-based comparison rather than a claim of hands-on testing of all five systems. The criteria are weighted as follows: three-year total cost (25%), alarm fundamentals and reliability features (20%), monitoring workflow (15%), installation and daily use (15%), camera costs (10%), smart-home compatibility (5%), contract and portability (5%), and privacy controls (5%). Claims and prices come from the linked manufacturer pages and independent 2026 comparison coverage; plans and prices can change.
