Aldi’s £16.99 video doorbell is a cheap Ring alternative—but the 480p camera has big compromises

Aldi’s reported £16.99 battery video doorbell avoids cloud fees with microSD storage, but its 480p camera and uncertain availability mean it is not a true Ring replacement.

Aldi’s reported £16.99 battery-powered video doorbell launched in the UK in October 2025 as a middle-aisle special buy. Its biggest attraction is local microSD recording, which avoids a monthly cloud-storage subscription. However, stock and the original price are not confirmed as current, and its reported 480p camera is far below Ring’s 1440×1440 resolution.

What Aldi’s £16.99 doorbell offers

Reports from TechRadar and GB News described a battery-powered, rechargeable video doorbell sold through Aldi stores, particularly the middle-aisle special-buy section.

The reported specification includes:

  • 480p video
  • Night vision
  • Two-way talk
  • Rechargeable-battery operation
  • microSD-card recording up to 32GB
  • Multiple chime sounds
  • Reported water and dust resistance

The reports do not clearly establish a formal product name or model number. They also do not confirm whether a microSD card, indoor chime or spare battery is included.

Is it really subscription-free?

Apparently, for recorded footage, yes. The reported design stores video on a microSD card instead of requiring a paid cloud plan. That means there should be no Ring-style monthly charge simply to save motion clips.

Ring Battery Doorbell 2K (newest model) Retinal 2K with wide-angle video, up to 6x Enhanced Zoom, Two-Way Talk, and Built-In Battery, Matte Mocha
  • Capture it all with Retinal 2K video — From wide views to tighter focus, it’s easy to see your home or business in crisp clarity with Retinal 2K.
  • Zoom in up to 6x — Catch details at a distance, inspect faces, and more with up to 6x Enhanced Zoom.
  • Connect to who’s there — See, hear, and speak in real time with Live View and Two-Way Talk.
  • Get real-time alerts — Receive real-time notifications on your phone when motion is detected.
  • Easily recharge — Simply insert the included removal tool to detach your doorbell from the wall, then recharge the built-in battery via USB-C. (Cable not included.)

But “subscription-free” does not mean entirely cost-free or maintenance-free. You may need to buy a compatible card, manage it when it fills up and periodically export or delete important recordings. The available reports do not confirm whether the doorbell overwrites its oldest footage, stops recording or requires manual deletion when storage is full.

Local storage also creates a security trade-off. If the doorbell is stolen, footage stored on or near the device could disappear with it. Cloud storage costs more and raises different privacy concerns, but it can preserve recordings after the hardware has been removed.

Ring does not require a subscription for every function. Its live-view guidance confirms that users can view live video and respond to visitors without a plan. A subscription is primarily needed to review recorded footage and access additional features.

In the UK, Ring Protect Solo is currently listed at £4.99 per month or £49.99 per year for one device. Ring also lists Multi at £7.99 per month or £79.99 per year, and Pro at £15.99 per month or £159.99 per year. Ring changed the names of its plans in January 2026, so older coverage may use different terminology. See the official Ring Protect plans page for current details.

The biggest compromise is 480p video

480p may be sufficient to show that somebody is standing at the door, or to speak to a delivery driver. It is much less suitable when you need useful detail: identifying a caller, seeing a parcel clearly, reading a number plate or cropping a clip without the image becoming difficult to interpret.

Ring Wired Doorbell 4K Pro (Newest Model), Retinal 4K with wide-angle video, 10x Enhanced Zoom, and Night Vision, Deep Silver
  • Capture it all with Retinal 4K video — See your home or business in the ultimate clarity with Retinal 4K.
  • Zoom in up to 10x — Catch details at a distance with up to 10x Enhanced Zoom.
  • See, hear and speak to visitors on camera — With Live View & Two-Way Talk with Audio+, you’ll be able to interact with who’s there in real time, right from your phone.
  • Tailored detection for more exact alerts — 3D Motion Detection pinpoints motion on your property so you’ll receive more precise alerts and fewer interruptions.
  • True color, even in low light — With Low-Light Sight, just a little ambient light gives you true color video. In total darkness, your camera switches to crisp black-and-white to keep details sharp.

This is not a like-for-like technical rival to Ring. Aldi competes mainly on price and the absence of a cloud fee, while Ring offers a clearer image, a more established app ecosystem and easier remote access to recorded clips.

  • what happens when the card is full;
  • whether clips can be downloaded or shared easily;
  • whether recordings survive an internet outage;

“Water and dust resistance” should not be treated as “waterproof” while the exact IP rating remains unconfirmed. Battery life should also be treated as unknown: no reliable runtime figure is established by the reports.

Who should consider it?

Aldi’s doorbell could make sense if you want a very inexpensive deterrent, basic visitor communication and local recording without recurring cloud charges. It is most appropriate for a sheltered installation and for buyers comfortable checking and managing a memory card.

It is a poor fit if you need clear evidence after a theft, dependable cloud backup, advanced person or parcel alerts, broad smart-home integration or a well-established support ecosystem. If the main purpose is identifying people at night or reading delivery details, 480p is a serious limitation.

Availability in 2026

The original reports concerned an October 2025 Aldi special buy, apparently sold in physical stores rather than through a permanent online product page. Current stock and the £16.99 price have not been verified. Treat listings from third-party sellers cautiously and check local Aldi stores rather than assuming the offer is still available.

Verdict

At £16.99, Aldi’s doorbell could be worthwhile as a basic, low-cost monitor if you find one in stock and accept its limitations. Its reported microSD storage is a genuine alternative to paying for cloud recording, but the low-resolution 480p camera, uncertain app and support details, unknown weather rating and potential loss of footage if the unit is stolen make it a budget option—not a true performance replacement for Ring.
