The clues are when the nuts fall, what they look like, and what has happened to the tree’s water supply. Pecan trees are the best-documented example here; timing and causes differ among nut-bearing species, cultivars, regions, and seasons.
1. Normal seasonal shedding and a heavy crop
Trees do not necessarily keep every developing nut. Pecans can shed nuts at several stages as the crop develops, and a heavy crop may make this natural process look alarming. A few fallen nuts are not, by themselves, proof that the tree is unhealthy.
University of Georgia pecan specialist Lenny Wells describes a July “third drop” as a normal physiological process, often associated with the endosperm failing to develop properly. His 2025 guidance says this described drop typically involves 30–50% of the nuts in a cluster. That figure applies to the pecan process he describes—not to every pecan crop or other nut trees.
A New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension guide describes earlier pecan drops associated with unpollinated flowers and incomplete fertilization, followed by a later drop associated with embryo abortion. It attributes about 25% of the total pecan crop to the first and second drops together and says the described August drop is generally 8–10%. The guide’s publication year is not stated, so these figures should be treated as guidance from that document, not a universal forecast.

2. Pollination or fertilization problems
In pecans, flowers that are not pollinated, or nuts in which fertilization is incomplete, may drop early. The New Mexico State guide associates cross-pollination with less dropping than self-pollination, and Wells notes that self-pollination can accentuate the July drop he describes. Pollination conditions and tree varieties matter, so this explanation should not be applied automatically to other species.
3. Drought stress or a sudden change in moisture
Insufficient soil moisture can contribute to excessive nut drop. But for pecans, a sudden influx of water can also be a problem at a susceptible stage: water-stage fruit split is associated with rainfall or irrigation near shell hardening, particularly after a dry spell. The split may occur internally and remain invisible from the outside; damaged nuts can fall roughly a week later.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Because both prolonged dryness and abrupt wetting can be involved, aim for steadier soil moisture where practical rather than making large, sudden irrigation changes. UGA’s pecan guidance discusses soil moisture and drought effects on production. A soil moisture meter can help monitor one factor, but it cannot diagnose pollination, pests, or disease.
4. Disease or insect damage
Inspect the shucks—the outer husks around pecan nuts—and any fallen nuts for visible clues. Pecan scab can cause dark, sunken lesions on shucks. Pecan weevil damage may leave larvae or an exit hole in fallen nuts. Shuckworm and nut curculio are also identified by UGA as causes of additional pecan drop. These signs can narrow the possibilities, but they do not establish a diagnosis on their own.

How to narrow down the cause
| Clue to check | What it may suggest | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| When the nuts fell | Early post-pollination loss, a summer seasonal drop, or loss near shell hardening may point toward different processes. | Pecan stages and timing are not a calendar for every species, cultivar, or region. |
| Appearance of fallen nuts | Dark, sunken shuck lesions may suggest scab; larvae or an exit hole may point to weevil damage. | Green nuts with no obvious external marks do not rule out internal water-stage splitting. |
| Recent moisture pattern | An extended dry spell or a sudden heavy rain or irrigation change may be relevant. | Water history is one clue, not proof of the cause. |
| Crop load and pollination context | A heavy crop can make normal shedding more conspicuous; pecan pollination or fertilization problems can contribute to early loss. | Species and cultivar affect how these clues should be interpreted. |
Look at both the tree and the fallen nuts, then observe whether the remaining crop is still substantial and whether the drop continues. A pattern over time is more informative than a single handful of fallen nuts.

- For suspected scab: UGA guidance recommends winter cleanup of fallen leaves, twigs, and nuts to reduce potential sources of infection.
- For suspected weevils: North Carolina Cooperative Extension advises removing fallen nuts before larvae can leave them and enter the soil.
- For water-related stress: Keep soil moisture as consistent as practical and avoid abrupt irrigation changes, especially after a dry spell.
- Before considering treatment: Identify the likely pest or disease and assess the severity. Extension sources caution that uniformly treating a large tree can be difficult; follow the current product label and local Extension advice rather than spraying on the basis of nut drop alone.
- For persistent heavy loss or uncertain symptoms: Contact a local Cooperative Extension office or qualified arborist for advice suited to the tree species and region.
North Carolina Cooperative Extension’s article on premature pecan loss was written by Daniel Simpson, originally dated October 20, 2020, and updated December 4, 2024. UGA’s account of the July pecan drop was published July 2, 2025, by Wells; his water-stage fruit-split article is dated August 19, 2014. The New Mexico State guide identifies Ron Byford and says it was scheduled for update and reissue in 2010, but the retrieved document does not state a clear publication year. For trees other than pecans, consult local Cooperative Extension guidance for the species and growing region.
