There is not enough verified evidence to call these the four best kitchen trash cans of 2026 or to say they were tested head-to-head. The available material does support a practical comparison of four documented options: a stainless step can, a sensor model, a basic plastic step can, and a large swing-top can. The right choice depends on where it fits, how it opens, what bags it takes, and how much upkeep you want.
How to compare kitchen trash cans
Capacity alone is a poor fit test. Before buying, measure the floor space and check lid clearance with the can in its intended location. A can that holds more may be awkward beside a cabinet or under a low counter.
- Opening: A step pedal keeps hands off the lid; a sensor avoids touching it but needs power and includes electronics; a swing top has a different opening and may do less to contain odors.
- Bags: Check the exact model’s compatibility. A gallon label does not guarantee that every bag of that nominal size fits well.
- Odor and cleaning: Look for the actual odor-control design, and consider whether the interior and lid will be easy to wipe down.
- Moving and longevity: Weight affects how easily a full can can be moved. Treat warranty and durability statements according to who makes them: a manufacturer’s test claim is not an independent comparison.
- Ongoing costs: Account for any model-specific liners or optional odor-control refills as well as the initial purchase price. Current prices and stock are not established here.

Its product descriptions and tradeoffs can inform a shortlist, but that date discrepancy means its ranking should not be presented as a verified 2026 assessment. The four models above are documented candidates, not confirmed picks from a commissioning author’s testing.
Simplehuman’s product page is the primary source for the CW2024’s listed capacity, warranty, liner system, and pedal claim. The product-specific figures are manufacturer statements; they do not establish how the can performs relative to competing products in everyday use. Current price and availability are also not established.
