A digital version of a construction jobsite starts with a standard 360° camera, the JobWalk mobile app, and a current floor plan. You walk the site, place each capture at its corresponding plan location, and upload the mapped imagery to FARO Sphere XG, the platform formerly known as HoloBuilder. Authorized project participants can then revisit conditions remotely, organized by project, sheet, date, and time.

The method is useful when photos must support more than a one-time update: progress checks, punch observations, owner questions, coordination, and comparisons between site conditions on different dates. It is a documentation system, not a promise of a particular labor saving. The available source material describes the workflow and product capabilities but does not establish quantified savings, accuracy improvements, or a universally recommended camera model.

What a digital jobsite record actually contains

A conventional photo folder usually tells you when an image was taken, but not always exactly where it belongs on the plan or how the condition relates to earlier and later work. A mapped 360° record adds spatial context. Each panorama is associated with a position on a floor plan, grouped with other captures by date and time, and made available through a cloud viewer.

FARO’s current product name is FARO Sphere XG; it was formerly called HoloBuilder. The documented 360° workflow uses a standard 360° camera connected to the JobWalk app on a mobile device. The app lets the field user choose a position on the floor plan and capture the site. The resulting image is then tied to that position instead of being left as an unidentified file.

That distinction matters to people who are not on site. An owner can inspect a recorded condition, a VDC team can check progress against a model, and a subcontractor can review an area without waiting for a new walk-through. These are capabilities described by FARO, not independent measurements of project outcomes.

What you need before the first capture

Camera, mobile device, and JobWalk

Start with a compatible standard 360° camera, a supported mobile device, and the JobWalk app. The source material does not identify one universally recommended camera model or provide a complete compatibility list. Camera recommendations can change, so verify current compatibility in FARO’s camera resources before purchasing equipment.

Assess the camera for the level of detail your work requires, how quickly it can be operated while walking, battery endurance, storage, and how easily it connects to the mobile workflow. A faster capture is not automatically better if the resulting detail is insufficient for remote review.

Current floor plans and project structure

Use the latest approved sheets or floor-plan files and establish a clear project structure before the walk. Confirm sheet names, levels, room identifiers, and revision status. If the plan does not match the field, the software can still store imagery, but the digital record will be harder to trust and navigate.

Decide who may view, annotate, or share the project. Sphere XG is intended to give authorized stakeholders remote access, so access rights should follow your project’s information-management rules rather than being handled informally from a shared login.

A repeatable capture standard

Write a short field standard before the first walk. It should state which areas are covered, how often they are revisited, what counts as a usable position, and how incomplete or blocked areas are recorded. Consistency is what makes two dates comparable; the platform cannot correct for a route that changes unpredictably from one visit to the next.

DEWALT 20V MAX Drill and Impact Driver (DCK240C2) | Includes 2 Batteries, Charger and Bag (
  • Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
  • Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces
  • Complete a wide range of applications with a high-performance motor that delivers up to 300 UWO, and an impact driver delivering up to 1,400 in-lbs of torque
  • Both the DEWALT impact driver and drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips

Step-by-step: capture and map the jobsite

  1. Open the correct project and plan in JobWalk. Confirm that the sheet, level, and revision correspond to the area you are about to document.
  2. Connect the 360° camera to the mobile device. Check connection status, battery, available storage, and the camera mode selected for the walk.
  3. Choose a position on the floor plan. Place the capture marker where the camera will stand. Use a location that another person can recognize from the plan and from the physical space.
  4. Set the camera safely. Keep the camera stable and clear of moving equipment, open edges, and active travel paths. Follow the site’s safety rules; documentation never takes priority over a safe work area.
  5. Capture the panorama or begin VideoMode. In single-image operation, take the 360° photo at the selected position. In VideoMode, walk while the system captures the sequence, subject to the feature and viewer access included in your subscription.
  6. Confirm the marker and image association. Check that the panorama appears at the intended plan location. Correct a misplaced marker immediately while the physical reference is still visible.
  7. Continue through the planned route. Cover rooms, corridors, equipment zones, and other areas required by the project standard. Record an area again if people, materials, glare, or motion make the first image difficult to interpret.
  8. Upload and verify the record. Send the captures to the cloud platform when connectivity and project policy allow. Open a few images in the viewer to confirm that they are readable, mapped to the right sheet, and associated with the expected date and time.

Choosing between individual captures and VideoMode

The capture mode determines the balance between walking speed and level of detail. Individual 360° photos require a deliberate stop at each planned position. VideoMode is designed to capture while the user walks and then organize corresponding 360° images on the floor plan. That can reduce interruptions during a long route, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed time saving.

Consideration Individual 360° photos VideoMode
Field action Stop and take each panorama at a selected plan position. Walk while the system captures a sequence.
Control over position Each image is deliberately placed before capture. Images are organized from the walking capture and should be checked on the plan.
Speed/detail trade-off Useful when deliberate framing and review of specific locations are important. Intended to favor a faster walking workflow; the appropriate detail level depends on settings and the project need.
Availability Part of the documented standard 360° workflow. Full functionality is in the Sphere XG Viewer and the add-on may not be included in every subscription.

Before planning a VideoMode rollout, check the subscription, viewer access, and current feature documentation for your account. Do not assume that a customer who can upload ordinary 360° photos also has the complete VideoMode feature set.

How to use the record after capture

Review by project, sheet, and time

Sphere XG’s software overview describes progress records organized by project, sheet, and time. Use those dimensions to answer a specific question: what was present in this room on a particular date, or how did this level change between two visits? A naming convention for the walk and a consistent route make those searches more useful.

Compare dates instead of relying on memory

When the same areas are captured repeatedly, compare images from different dates to inspect completed work, concealed conditions, material movement, or unresolved access issues. Comparisons are only meaningful when the plan revision, viewpoint, and coverage are reasonably consistent. If a room was blocked or captured from a different position, label that limitation rather than presenting the pair as a like-for-like comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add markups and punch observations

The platform describes markups and punchlist observations as supported functions. Use an annotation to identify the exact condition, explain what action is required, and assign responsibility through your existing project process. A markup should point to evidence in the panorama; it should not replace the formal record required by your contract or safety program.

Review beside BIM information

Sphere XG also describes side-by-side comparison with BIM renderings. This is useful for coordination discussions: participants can inspect the recorded condition and the intended model view together. Treat the model and the capture as different records. A mismatch may reflect construction progress, a field change, a model revision, or a registration issue, so resolve the cause before issuing a correction.

Buyer checklist for a 360° capture setup

The sources establish the standard 360° camera category, but not a model-level recommendation. Compare the following before committing to hardware or a subscription.

Decision area Questions to verify
Camera compatibility Is the current camera supported by JobWalk and listed in the vendor’s current compatibility guidance?
Image quality Does the camera provide enough detail for the distances, room sizes, labels, and conditions your team must inspect?
Capture speed Will the team use deliberate still captures, walking capture, or both? Does the selected mode preserve the required level of detail?
Mobile workflow Does the field device run the current app reliably, maintain a connection, and remain usable with gloves and site conditions?
Subscription features Are Sphere XG Viewer access, VideoMode, storage, and sharing permissions included in the account you intend to use?
Operational support Who maintains the project structure, checks uploads, manages access, and trains replacement field users?

Because compatibility and subscription contents can change, obtain confirmation for the exact camera, app version, and account before buying equipment or promising a workflow to a client.

Quality controls that make captures dependable

Keep route and viewpoint consistent

Use the same general route and recognizable plan positions on recurring walks. Consistency makes date-to-date review easier and reduces arguments about whether a change is real or simply a different viewpoint.

Check coverage at the end of every walk

Review the plan for gaps, duplicate markers, and images that landed on the wrong sheet. Pay special attention to stair cores, service rooms, ceiling spaces, and temporary enclosures, which are easy to skip when a route follows the main circulation path.

Separate observation from interpretation

Record what the panorama shows before adding a conclusion. For example, identify an uninstalled door frame and its location; reserve the question of responsibility or schedule impact for the appropriate project workflow.

Protect access and context

360° images can show workers, private information, security systems, or proprietary installations. Limit access to the people who need it, follow the project’s retention rules, and avoid sharing a public link when the project requires controlled distribution.

Common problems and practical fixes

  • The image is on the wrong room or sheet: Correct the marker while on site, then verify the updated position in the viewer. Do not rely on a later guess based only on the file timestamp.
  • The panorama is too dark, blurry, or obstructed: Re-capture from a safer, clearer position and note any permanent obstruction. A mapped image is not useful if the condition cannot be read.
  • VideoMode is missing: Check whether the account has Sphere XG Viewer access and whether the add-on is included in the subscription. If not, use the standard still-capture workflow or obtain the required entitlement.
  • Uploads appear incomplete: Check the mobile connection, camera transfer status, and cloud project selection. Reopen representative images after upload rather than assuming that a completed field walk equals a complete cloud record.
  • Two dates cannot be compared fairly: Identify changes in route, plan revision, viewpoint, lighting, or access. Re-capture the area using the project standard when a reliable comparison is essential.
  • Stakeholders cannot find a needed image: Confirm that they have permission to the project and that the image is organized under the expected project, sheet, and date.

Who benefits from the digital record

Owners can review progress without arranging a site visit for every question. Architects and VDC teams can inspect recorded conditions alongside design information. Subcontractors can revisit areas that affect coordination or punch work. Superintendents and project managers gain a dated visual record that can support discussions about sequence and responsibility.

Those benefits depend on disciplined capture and clear access. The platform’s ability to share information does not by itself establish that a condition is complete, compliant, or contractually accepted. Use the panoramas as project evidence within the inspection, quality, safety, and change-management procedures already governing the job.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show

A November 2022 Building Design + Construction webinar summary presented 360° capture as a way to make jobsite conditions easier to organize and share. That item was promotional in tone and not an independent field test or comparative review. Current FARO descriptions support the product name, JobWalk workflow, plan mapping, date organization, remote viewing, comparisons, markups, and BIM side-by-side capabilities.

No reviewed source supplies an attributable figure for hours saved, cost reduction, accuracy gained, or return on investment. Phrases describing capture as fast as a person walks should be read as workflow framing, not as a measured performance result. A project should establish its own acceptance criteria—coverage, readability, upload completeness, and stakeholder access—before claiming operational improvement.

A sensible rollout approach

  1. Define the use case. Decide whether the first objective is progress documentation, remote owner review, punch observations, coordination, or a combination.
  2. Validate the setup. Confirm camera compatibility, mobile-device operation, JobWalk access, floor-plan preparation, and the Sphere XG subscription features required.
  3. Run a controlled field walk. Capture a representative level or area using the planned route and naming convention.
  4. Review with the intended users. Ask an off-site stakeholder to locate a specific room, compare dates, and inspect a markup. Fix navigation or permission problems before expanding coverage.
  5. Publish the field standard. Document route, frequency, quality checks, access rules, and the process for correcting misplaced or unreadable captures.

The result is a dependable digital jobsite record when every image has a known location, date, and purpose, and when the team verifies what the cloud viewer actually contains.
