For a bedroom, the right shade and how much of it you use depend on the room’s light, size, fixed finishes, and the atmosphere you want. Start with pillows, bedding, or artwork if you want an easy-to-change accent; choose a painted wall or broader scheme for a more deliberate color statement.
Choose the right kind of orange for your bedroom
Orange spans a wide range of undertones and intensities. Benjamin Moore Color & Design Expert Arianna Cesa describes it as a family ranging “from energizing shades of sun-kissed summer citrus, to the golden hues of an autumn sunset.” That range makes it useful to think in terms of a particular shade, not simply “orange.”
- Pale peach: soft and light, a gentler choice for walls or bedding.
- Pink-toned or kumquat orange: a quieter, more nuanced alternative to vivid orange.
- Golden orange: warm and sunny, suitable for repeated accents or a more confident color scheme.
- Burnt orange and terracotta: earthier, deeper shades that make a stronger statement.
These ideas are starting points rather than a ranking: a color that feels balanced in one room may look very different in another.
31 orange bedroom ideas
Paint and wall treatments
- Paint the walls pale peach. Use peach for a soft introduction to orange. Benjamin Moore suggests pairing it with creamy off-whites, or grounding it with charcoal or midnight blue.
- Create a burnt-orange feature wall. Concentrate the color on one wall for a clear focal point without carrying it across the whole room.
- Try a terracotta feature wall. Dulux and Benjamin Moore both present terracotta as an earthy bedroom direction; keep nearby trim or textiles light if the room needs balance.
- Use muted kumquat on the walls. Sherwin-Williams quotes interior designer Patricia Gray calling Kumquat “very relaxing and soothing” and suitable for a bedroom or another place where a quieter mood is wanted. This is Gray’s design opinion, not a measured sleep or mood effect.
- Paint a smaller architectural detail. Bring orange to a recess, alcove, or other contained wall area instead of making every wall the same color.
- Keep the walls neutral and add orange below eye level. An orange-painted lower wall or a color-blocked section can define the bed area while leaving the upper walls light.
- Use orange on a wall behind the bed. Make the bed wall the room’s main color statement and let the other walls remain quieter.
- Choose a golden-orange wall color. A golden shade offers a warmer, less citrus-forward route than a vivid orange.
Bedding and soft furnishings
- Make an orange duvet the focal point. Choose bedding in a shade that works with the room’s existing floor and furniture.
- Layer an orange throw over neutral bedding. A single textile adds color without committing the walls.
- Arrange orange accent pillows against cream or white bedding. This keeps the color concentrated and easy to swap.
- Repeat one orange tone across several pillows. Repetition gives a small accent a considered look without spreading it across large surfaces.
- Mix orange with layered neutrals. Keep the larger textiles subdued and use orange in one or two smaller details for warmth.
- Use a patterned bedspread with orange in the print. Let the other colors in the pattern guide your choices for sheets and nearby decor.
- Try burnt-orange curtains. Check how the fabric looks alongside the wall color and the daylight at the window.
- Add an orange upholstered headboard. It brings a substantial block of color to the bed without requiring painted walls.
- Use a small orange bedside textile. A cushion or folded throw is a low-commitment way to test the shade in the room.
Color pairings
- Balance orange with cream. Gray recommends white or cream to balance orange’s warmth.
- Pair peach with charcoal. Benjamin Moore’s guidance offers deeper charcoal as a grounding contrast to peach.
- Set peach against midnight blue. Use blue in bedding, art, or another contained area to contrast with a peach wall or textile.
- Bring in blue as an accent. Sherwin-Williams designer Kenneth Brown recommends considering blue with orange; keep the stronger colors balanced rather than covering the room in competing saturated surfaces.
- Add green details to an orange scheme. Green can provide a contrasting accent, whether in a print, a textile, or a small decor item.
- Explore orange and grey. Dulux presents grey as one possible bedroom pairing. Check the undertones of both colors in the actual room before committing.
- Keep orange with warm whites. This restrained combination lets the orange read clearly while softening its overall presence.
- Use wood tones to support terracotta. Compare the specific wood finish with the terracotta sample; both the tone and surrounding light will affect the result.
Artwork, lighting, and finishing details
- Hang art with orange in the palette. Pull one or two colors from the artwork into nearby bedding or accessories.
- Choose a lamp with an orange base. Homes & Gardens describes orange carried through bedroom details such as a lamp base and tones in a print—a layered approach rather than a single-color scheme.
- Repeat orange in a lampshade or small decor piece. Echoing an accent once elsewhere can help it feel intentional.
- Use orange in a rug pattern. A patterned rug can introduce the color while connecting the floor to bedding or artwork.
- Bring in orange through a decorative accessory. Dulux recommends soft furnishings, wall art, and accessories as subtle routes into an orange bedroom.
- Combine several small orange details. A few coordinated touches—such as a throw, art, and a lamp base—can create a layered scheme while leaving the main surfaces neutral.
Match the shade and coverage to your room
Decide not only which orange you like but also how much of the room should carry it. A painted room or feature wall makes a more deliberate statement; bedding, pillows, art, and other accessories let you introduce the color gradually and change it more easily.

Natural light and room size affect how paint colors appear, according to Sherwin-Williams. Behr recommends weighing bedding, flooring, furniture, window treatments, and light together. Look at a proposed shade beside those fixed or costly-to-change elements before choosing where to use it.
- For a cautious first step: try a pillow, throw, artwork, or other accessory against the room’s existing colors.
- For a visible but contained change: consider one feature wall or a larger textile such as curtains or a duvet.
- For a more enveloping scheme: choose the shade with the room’s light and finishes in view, then test it before painting.
Test orange paint before committing

- Compare colors against the room’s finishes. Check the sample with the bedding, flooring, furniture, and window treatments you plan to keep.
- View the sample in more than one place. Behr notes that shadows and lighting affect how a finished color looks, so a single wall location may not tell the whole story.
- Observe it in the room’s light. Look at the sample in the conditions in which you use the bedroom, rather than relying only on a screen or a store display.
- Choose coverage after testing. Decide whether the shade works best as an accent, on one wall, or across a broader painted scheme.
For a paint project, supplies may include painter’s tape, brushes, rollers, trays, a drop cloth, primer, and paint samples. The right preparation depends on the surface and the project.

Sherwin-Williams describes oranges as “friendly and welcoming,” while designer Patricia Gray characterizes Kumquat as soothing. Those are color and design perspectives, not evidence that orange improves sleep or produces a guaranteed mood change. Homes & Gardens likewise notes that bedroom color depends on desired mood, light, and personal preference. Choose the shade and coverage you enjoy living with rather than treating a color as a sleep solution.
