20 Amazing Climbing Plants for Trellises, Fences, and Arbors

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best climbing plant depends on how much room you have, what kind of support you can provide, and the light and climate in your garden. A compact annual such as black-eyed Susan vine may suit a small trellis; Virginia creeper can grow far larger and be difficult to remove. Use the guide below to compare 20 options, then check local plant labels and invasive-plant guidance before planting.

How to choose a climbing plant

Start with the structure and the plant’s mature size—not just its flowers. Some vines twine around narrow supports, while heavier or larger plants need a sturdy arbor, fence, or trellis sized for their growth. Light, soil, climate, and whether you want an annual, seasonal, or woody plant also narrow the choices.

  • Measure the space: The source-reported estimates range from 3–8 feet in one season for black-eyed Susan vine to as much as 50 feet for Virginia creeper. Actual growth varies with conditions.
  • Match the support: Wisteria, climbing hydrangea, and moonflower are among the plants for which the source calls for strong or solid support. Plan for the mature plant, not just its size at planting.
  • Check local conditions: The USDA zone ranges below are the source article’s guidance, not guarantees. Confirm suitability with current local plant labels or regional horticultural advice.
  • Check safety and status: Some vines can be invasive in certain places. Check local guidance before planting, and consult the ASPCA’s searchable database for plant-specific pet toxicity information.

20 climbing plants to consider

Annuals and warm-climate vines

  1. Cypress vine (Ipomoea quamoclit): A full-sun vine for well-drained soil. The source describes it as commonly grown as an annual and lists zones 11–12; it recommends starting from seed.
  2. Black-eyed Susan vine (Thunbergia alata): A useful choice for a smaller trellis, with source-reported growth of 3–8 feet in one season. It tolerates full sun to part shade.
  3. Sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus): A fragrant annual that can reach 8 feet with support. It prefers full sun and rich, well-drained soil.
  4. Firecracker vine (Ipomoea lobata): The source reports growth up to 16 feet and describes it as an annual or a plant for zones 10–11.
  5. Hyacinth bean (Lablab purpureus): A vigorous vine that may reach 20 feet in a season, so provide good support. The source describes it as an annual or suitable for zones 10–11.
  6. Moonflower (Ipomoea alba): Give this vine solid support. The source describes typical annual growth of 10–15 feet, with much greater growth possible in tropical conditions, and recommends sowing seeds six to eight weeks before the last spring frost.
  7. Morning glory (Ipomoea purpurea): Easy to start from seed and reported to reach 10 feet. Check local invasive-plant guidance before growing it.
  8. Sweet potato vine (Ipomoea batatas): Often grown in containers or hanging baskets rather than as a permanent structural vine. The source recommends full sun and describes propagation from cuttings.

Woody vines and larger climbers

  1. Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia): A fast-growing, large climber; the source reports up to 50 feet tall and 10 feet wide, with zones 3–9. It can be difficult to remove, so consider its eventual spread before planting.
  2. Dutchman’s pipe (Aristolochia tomentosa): A climber for sun to shade that may reach 30 feet; the source lists zones 5–8.
  3. American wisteria (Wisteria frutescens): This woody vine needs strong support and regular pruning. The source lists zones 5–9 and notes that it may take years to establish and flower. It cautions North American gardeners against Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis), described there as non-native and invasive; verify current local guidance.
  4. Climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea anomala): A large climber that may reach 50 feet and needs strong support. The source lists zones 4–8 and says it performs poorly in very hot climates.
  5. Climbing roses (Rosa): A broad group suitable for fences, trellises, and arbors. The source gives full sun to part shade as a general guide; choose a cultivar suited to your conditions and structure.
  6. Winter jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum): Yellow flowers may appear in late winter or early spring. It can be used as ground cover or trained along a trellis, and the source reports growth up to 15 feet.

Flowering vines for particular uses

  1. Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata): The source describes white and purple flowers and lists zones 5–9. It says the fruit, known as maypops, can be eaten or made into jelly; confirm species-specific food identification and safety guidance before consuming any fruit.
  2. Clematis (Clematis): A trellis or arbor option with wide variation among types. The source lists zones 4–8 and recommends checking the cultivar label because characteristics differ.
  3. Mandevilla (Mandevilla × amabilis): Often grown in a pot, which can make seasonal shelter practical. The source recommends bringing it indoors in colder months and lists full sun to part shade.
  4. Carolina jasmine (Gelsemium sempervirens): An evergreen twining vine with spring flowers in suitable climates; the source lists zones 7–10.
  5. Common hop (Humulus lupulus): A climbing plant also used commercially in brewing; the source lists zones 4–8. It is dioecious, meaning male and female plants are separate; both are needed for seed production.
  6. Trumpet honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens): A vine with scarlet, tubular flowers and wildlife interest. Check local invasive-plant concerns before planting.

Plan the support before planting

Use the support type and strength that suit the vine’s growth habit and eventual size. A light annual on a small trellis is a different structural load from a mature woody vine. The source specifically calls for adequate or sturdy support for wisteria, climbing hydrangea, and moonflower. It does not compare or endorse any particular trellis model.

For a fence, arbor, or trellis, consider where the plant will spread and whether it can be pruned or removed without damaging the structure. The source notes that Virginia creeper can grow quickly and be hard to remove, while wisteria requires regular pruning.
