No—not if the appliance requires a neutral. A supply with two hot conductors and an equipment-grounding conductor does not provide the neutral needed by a 4-wire 120/240V appliance. Do not use the ground as a neutral or try to create one with an adapter or terminal jumper. Stop and have a qualified electrician identify the circuit and determine a code-compliant solution for the exact appliance and location.
Why the ground cannot replace the neutral
In a typical North American split-phase supply, the two hot legs provide 240V between them, while either leg and the neutral provide 120V. An appliance may use the hot legs for its 240V loads and the neutral for 120V components. The equipment ground has a different job: it provides a safety path for fault current, rather than serving as the normal return path for a 120V load. Why an adapter or different cord will not solve it
A plug adapter or cord changes the connection at the appliance; it does not add a missing conductor to the building circuit. A cord specified for a 4-wire supply is appropriate only when the supply and appliance are compatible. Do not connect neutral and ground together at the appliance to compensate for the absent neutral.
Some appliances can be configured for different supply arrangements, but that depends on the specific model, its instructions, the actual circuit, and applicable local requirements. A legacy 3-wire appliance connection is not a fix for a circuit described as two hots and ground: that description still does not identify a neutral.

What to do before choosing a connection
- Stop before connecting the appliance. Do not energize it using the ground as a neutral, and do not install an adapter or jumper to make the connection appear compatible.
- Identify the appliance. Record its make and model, check the rating plate, and locate its installation instructions. The required connection can differ between ranges, dryers, and other appliances. Whirlpool directs range owners to their model-specific installation guide.
- Have a qualified electrician assess the supply. The electrician should identify the actual conductors, circuit and receptacle, then determine what compliant work—if any—is needed for that appliance.
- Match the final connection to the instructions and local rules. Confirm the required cord, plug, circuit rating, and terminal configuration for the exact appliance and installation.
Why model-specific instructions matter
Four-wire appliance connections generally keep the neutral and equipment ground separate at the appliance connection, but the exact terminal arrangement and any required configuration depend on the model. For example, Whirlpool’s W10471644 dryer instructions describe moving that model’s neutral-ground conductor from the external ground connector to the center neutral terminal for a 4-wire supply, isolating the cabinet from neutral. That is a model-specific instruction, not a procedure to apply to another appliance or to a circuit without a neutral. Whirlpool also advises consulting a licensed electrician when grounding connections need alteration.
