Hidden beds can make an office, craft room, den or studio do double duty—but the right choice depends on more than how neatly it disappears. Before settling on a design, measure the bed both closed and fully open, check what furniture must move, and verify that the chosen mattress and anchoring system match the manufacturer’s specifications.

Plan the room before choosing a hidden bed

“Murphy bed” and “wall bed” commonly describe beds that fold into or against a cabinet or wall. Available formats also include cabinet beds and desk-bed configurations, but these are not interchangeable designs. Compare the specific format, dimensions and installation requirements rather than relying on a product label. Murphy Wall-Beds Hardware Inc. describes several of these formats.

  • Measure the room: Record wall width and height, closed cabinet depth, the full open-bed projection, ceiling height, trim and other obstructions. Make sure there is room to assemble and service the unit.
  • Map the open-bed route: Mark the projected bed area on the floor and check circulation to the door. Account for a desk chair, sofa, equipment, screens and any furniture that must be moved before opening.
  • Decide what the room must do while the bed is closed: A desk, craft surface, exercise zone or storage wall may affect which bed orientation and configuration will work.
  • Verify compatibility: Check the manufacturer’s mattress dimensions, thickness and weight limits, orientation, cabinet configuration and mechanism requirements for the exact model.
  • Plan installation and anchoring: Follow the selected product’s current instructions. If you cannot confidently meet its structural and assembly requirements, use a qualified installer.

There is no single standard footprint. For example, Murphy Wall-Beds Hardware Inc. lists its Principal queen vertical wall bed at 89 1/2 inches wide, 88 3/16 inches high and 15 7/8 inches deep when closed, with an open-bed projection of 89 1/2 inches. Those measurements apply to that model, not to wall beds generally. See the Principal queen wall bed’s listed dimensions before using any product’s measurements to plan a room.

15 hidden bed ideas for different rooms

1. A classic vertical Murphy bed

Use a tall cabinet front that reads as a wardrobe or paneled wall when closed. This layout needs adequate wall height and enough clear floor space in front for the bed to open. Measure both conditions before choosing a model.

2. A horizontal wall bed

A bed that opens sideways can suit a lower ceiling or a long, low wall. It still needs sufficient width and clear projection; compare the selected model’s own closed dimensions and open footprint rather than assuming a horizontal bed always saves space.

3. A home-office bed with a desk

Keep a work area available by day and a guest bed ready for night. Desk mechanisms and clearance needs differ by product, so establish exactly what moves, folds or must be cleared before the bed opens. Include the desk chair in the floor plan.

4. A wall bed flanked by bookcases

Side shelving can make the bed cabinet read as a built-in library and provide storage for books or office supplies. Murphy Door lists shelving and side cabinetry as add-on possibilities. Check the selected configuration’s dimensions and make sure the shelves do not interfere with the bed’s movement. Murphy Door’s wall-bed collection shows its options.

5. A bed concealed behind bookcase doors

A bookcase-front component can disguise a wall bed as shelving. Murphy Systems lists its BC-1 bookcase-bed component for compatible wall-bed frames in twin, full or queen sizes. That does not make every bookcase and frame a plug-and-play pairing: confirm the frame and component are compatible before planning a build. Check the BC-1 product details.

6. A cabinet bed in a den

A cabinet bed can function as a substantial piece of furniture in a den, without being the same format as a wall-anchored bed. Decide where the unit will sit and confirm the specific product’s footprint and opening process; the room needs to accommodate the bed when deployed, not just the closed cabinet.

Must install into wall studs — not for plaster-only walls or drywall without studs. Three wall types: wood studs (lag bolts), metal studs (toggle bolts), brick/concrete (tapcons). Anchors not included. Kits NOT interchangeable (gas pistons calibrated by mattress size/weight). Wooden stabilizer leg rod (~$10, any hardware store) required but not included.

7. A studio-apartment guest bed

In a studio, a concealed bed can let one room serve as both daytime living space and guest room. Keep the sleeping area’s open projection clear of the main circulation route, and choose everyday furniture that can be shifted without an involved rearrangement.

8. A craft-room conversion

Keep work surfaces and supplies accessible during the day, then close the bed away when the room returns to craft use. Murphy Wall-Beds Hardware Inc. identifies craft rooms as one possible wall-bed setting. Its room-use examples are inspiration, not a substitute for checking a specific unit’s fit and clearances.

9. A yoga or exercise room with a fold-down guest bed

A fold-down bed can share a room with exercise equipment if its open footprint leaves a safe route to the door and does not conflict with equipment storage. Murphy Wall-Beds Hardware Inc. identifies yoga studios as a possible wall-bed setting. Plan the bed’s open area and equipment positions together rather than treating them as separate layouts.

10. A media room with a hidden bed

Combine movie-night seating and occasional sleeping, but map the screen, seating and bed projection at the same time. Check whether opening the bed blocks the screen, an exit path or access to equipment, and decide where the seating goes when guests stay.

11. A guest-room wall with integrated storage

Pair a wall bed with shelves or cupboards so the closed unit acts as a storage wall and a focal point. Leave the bed’s opening path unobstructed, and make sure adjacent cabinetry does not block access needed for opening or servicing the mechanism.

12. A mirrored or decorative-panel front

A mirror or decorative finish can help a closed bed blend into the room’s design. Treat this as a finish choice, not an established feature of every bed system: confirm with the manufacturer that the front is compatible with the mechanism and stays within its rated limits.

13. A custom millwork surround

Trim, side panels and overhead storage can visually integrate a purchased mechanism with the room’s millwork. Follow the maker’s directions for access and installation; do not modify structural components or conceal areas that the manufacturer requires installers to reach.

14. A twin hidden bed for a compact guest room

A twin format may leave more open floor area than a larger bed, but the label alone does not establish how much space it saves. Compare the actual mattress dimensions, cabinet footprint and open projection for the models under consideration.

15. A hidden bed with a clear landing zone

Make the bed’s full open area a deliberate part of the layout. Keep a rug, chair or occasional table outside its projection so setup does not begin with clearing a crowded floor. Test the layout with the bed dimensions before committing to permanent furniture placement.

Check installation and product limits before building around a bed

Anchoring and mechanism requirements are model-specific. Murphy Wall-Beds Hardware Inc.’s support information says its vertical bed attaches at the top of the cabinet using three L-brackets fastened into solid structural studs. It also recommends clearance above the bed for mounting and access to both sides while mounting the front panel. Those directions apply to the products covered by that support information, not to every wall bed. Review Murphy Wall-Beds Hardware Inc.’s support and installation resources, and use the current guide for the bed you select.

The same support information gives model-specific mattress thickness allowances for different leg configurations and a maximum upright mechanism load. Those figures should not be transferred to another mechanism or configuration. Check the chosen product’s own limits before buying a mattress or adding a front finish.

Some manufacturers sell hardware kits for wall-bed projects, but a kit is not a universal mechanism. Confirm that any kit fits the intended bed orientation, mattress and cabinet, and that you can meet its installation and anchoring requirements. Murphy Wall-Beds Hardware Inc. lists hardware kits and bed formats on its product site.

Choose by fit and daily use, not by the hidden-bed label

Before comparing products, write down the closed and open dimensions you can accommodate, the room’s everyday use, and the mattress requirements. Then compare the relevant configuration details:

  • Vertical or horizontal orientation and the wall dimensions each requires.
  • Closed width, height and depth, plus open projection and clear circulation.
  • Wall-anchored bed or cabinet-bed format.
  • Integrated desk, bookcase front, side shelves or other storage.
  • Compatible mattress size, thickness and weight limits.
  • Anchoring, assembly and servicing requirements.
  • Delivered cost and service availability in your region.

Product dimensions and claims describe individual manufacturers’ offerings, not independent head-to-head test results. The most useful comparison is between specific models that meet your room measurements and installation constraints.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
