There is no single official haint blue: the name covers a range from pale, quiet blue-green to vivid turquoise. These 14 documented paint-color examples offer different ways to get the look, but names and outdoor formulations can change, so confirm current manufacturer details and test a physical sample on your porch before choosing.
What haint blue means—and why there is no one official shade
Haint blue is a family of blues, not a universal historic formula. Historic New England explains that historic paint could vary with pigments and hand-mixed binders and solvents. The Historic Charleston Foundation, quoted in a Kentucky Heritage Council guide, likewise describes a range of colors considered “piazza blue” or “haint blue,” rather than one official color. The documented spectrum runs from robin’s-egg and pale blue-green to saturated blue and turquoise.

The tradition is commonly connected to Gullah Geechee culture and African traditions, shaped by the history of enslavement and indigo production. In the folklore, a blue porch ceiling might resemble sky, inviting spirits (haints) to pass upward, or water, which they could not cross. These are beliefs and oral traditions, not established supernatural effects. The National Park Service’s Michael Allen describes haint blue on buildings throughout the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor as a visual representation of Gullah culture’s power and legacy, as quoted in the Kentucky Heritage Council guide.
Its popularity today also owes something to its light, sky-like appearance. Sherwin-Williams color marketing director Sue Wadden calls haint blue a “soft, dreamy blue” and notes that people have adopted the color in different ways beyond Charleston.

14 haint blue paint colors to consider
The colors below are organized by the way their described character tends to read, not as a ranking. They are examples documented by the cited sources, not a claim that every shade is currently sold in every exterior paint line. Confirm the current name, color code, and exterior-use directions with the manufacturer.
Pale and airy
- Palladian Blue (Benjamin Moore): HGTV describes this as a soft, airy blue-green used in a porch example, with darker blue accents.
- Meander Blue (Sherwin-Williams): A light blue with teal undertones; HGTV identifies it as a traditional choice in the Historic Charleston Foundation color deck.
- Tidewater (Sherwin-Williams): HGTV describes this as a light ocean blue with warm green undertones and suggests it for a porch ceiling.
- Windy Blue (HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams): A breezy blue with a gray undertone, shown in an exterior setting by HGTV.
- Harbor Haze (Benjamin Moore): Spectrum Paint features it in a porch-ceiling example.
- Blue Allure (Benjamin Moore): Spectrum Paint quotes a local painting source describing it as a soft blue with a slight green undertone.
- Woodlawn Blue: Included among designer recommendations reproduced in the Kentucky Heritage Council guide; check current product details and code with the manufacturer.
- Bird’s Egg: Also included in the Kentucky Heritage Council’s reproduced designer recommendations; verify current name, code, and exterior suitability.
- Borrowed Light (Farrow & Ball, No. 235): Named in an exact-title article search snippet. The full 14-color list was not available for verification, so treat this as a lead to check with the manufacturer rather than a confirmed exterior recommendation.
Blue-green and traditional references
- Haint Blue SP 51 (Spectrum Paint): Spectrum says its formula is loosely based on Duron’s old Piazza Blue formula and recommends its Empress Exterior Satin for porch ceilings. Check current local availability and product directions.
- Piazza Blue: The Kentucky Heritage Council guide identifies the Historic Charleston Foundation reference as D-CR075. The guide is older; verify the reference and current equivalents before purchasing.
- Jetstream (Sherwin-Williams): Listed in the manufacturer’s 2014 “Southern Tradition of Haint Blue” color-story palette. Current catalog status is not established here.
- Open Air (Sherwin-Williams): Also listed in that 2014 palette; check whether the name and code remain current.
- Watery (Sherwin-Williams): Listed in the 2014 manufacturer palette; confirm current availability and exterior formulation.
Brighter or more saturated possibilities
- Niagara Falls (Olympic, OL633.2): Named in the exact-title syndicated article’s search snippet. Its full context and exterior suitability could not be verified, so confirm the color and product details before relying on it.
The source material also identifies Wondrous Blue and Rhythmic Blue in Sherwin-Williams’ 2014 haint-blue palette, Tidewater above, and Pool Blue (SW 6944) in the exact-title article snippet. These are additional names to investigate if you want a broader shortlist; inclusion in an older palette or snippet does not establish current availability or porch-ceiling suitability.

How to choose a shade for your porch
Start with the light and ceiling proportions
A shaded porch can make a color look darker or less vivid than it appears outdoors in full sun. A tall ceiling may tolerate a more saturated shade, while a low or dim porch may feel more enclosed under a strong blue. These are practical considerations rather than fixed rules: look at samples in the actual ceiling light before committing.
Check undertones against the house
Decide whether you want the ceiling to read more blue or more green. Then compare it with the siding, trim, and front door. Sherwin-Williams designer Amy Milani advises adjusting the shade for the amount of light and coordinating it with the siding and door. A blue-green can bridge green landscaping or warm materials; a grayer blue may sit more quietly beside neutral siding; a brighter turquoise becomes a more noticeable accent.

Sample the actual exterior product
- Confirm with the paint maker that the color is available in a product suitable for your porch ceiling and exterior conditions.
- Get a physical chip or sample; screens and online color charts cannot reliably show the exact appearance in your porch’s light.
- View it on the porch at different times of day and alongside the siding, trim, and door before selecting the final color.
- Follow the chosen product’s label for surface preparation, application, and finish. Spectrum’s Empress Exterior Satin recommendation applies specifically to its Haint Blue SP 51 example; it is not a universal specification for every porch or paint.
Does haint blue keep insects away?
That effect is not established by the cited sources, so modern blue paint should not be treated as an insect or bird deterrent. Sherwin-Williams notes that historic paint could include milk and lime and says any repellent effect may have related to paint composition rather than hue. The folklore about haints and the separate claim about insects should not be conflated.
