There is no universal list of houseplants that everyone must avoid. These 12 are worth keeping out of homes where young children or plant-chewing pets could reach them because poison-control and extension sources identify potential hazards. The risk depends on the plant, the part involved, and whether exposure is by eating it or touching it—not every contact causes serious illness. The examples below are not ranked by severity.
Why these plants may not suit every home
“Potentially poisonous” does not mean that a plant will inevitably cause harm. Poison Control notes that hazards vary by species, plant part, and route of exposure; some plants are harmful if eaten, while others can cause problems through skin contact. The examples here are selected because North Carolina Poison Control lists several as potentially poisonous indoor plants and UF/IFAS Extension discusses potential risks from the others. The sources do not provide a consistent scale for ranking them.

Children who may put leaves or flowers in their mouths and pets that chew foliage are the main household situations to consider. A plant that is manageable in one home may be a poor fit in another. Confirm the plant’s identity before relying on general advice: keep its label or take a clear photograph, since accurate identification helps Poison Control provide guidance.

1. Amaryllis (Hippeastrum spp.)

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide what belongs in your home
- Consider who can reach the plant. Young children and pets that chew foliage are important exposure contexts. A high shelf is not a dependable barrier for every animal.
- Check the route and plant part. The sources describe hazards involving ingestion and, for some plants, skin contact; the relevant part may differ by plant. Do not assume all plants or exposures behave alike.
- Identify the plant accurately. Keep its label or a clear photograph available in case you need advice. Common names can refer to different plants, so use the botanical name when possible.
- Observe pets around new plants. The University of Tennessee Extension recommends watching how pets interact with plants and moving them somewhere inaccessible if needed. Its guidance focuses on dogs and cats, is not exhaustive, and does not cover every indoor pet.
- Choose alternatives with care. The Tennessee guide names Peperomia among houseplants it considers largely nontoxic to dogs and cats. That is not a guarantee for every species, animal, or household; check the exact plant and ask a veterinarian if unsure.
What to do after possible exposure
If a person may have eaten a plant, Poison Control recommends using webPOISONCONTROL or calling 1-800-222-1222. Have the plant label or a clear photograph ready. Poison Control’s guidance is: “Don’t guess what you should do. Get accurate answers online or by phone.”
If a pet may have eaten a plant, contact a veterinarian and/or an animal poison-control service, as advised by the University of Tennessee Extension. This article cannot determine whether a particular exposure is harmful or diagnose symptoms.
