Costs and cooking times depend on ingredients, portions, appliance capacity, and your model.
12 practical foods to try in your air fryer
Air fryers can prepare much more than frozen snacks. Manufacturer guidance and recipe collections include proteins, fresh vegetables, and frozen ingredients. Use a recipe validated for your appliance, and check its manual: time and temperature are not universal across models or batch sizes.
1. Frozen fries or potato sides
Frozen fries and similar prepared potato sides are an easy starting point. Philips says frozen foods can be cooked in its air fryer. A 2024 appliance manual advises checking some prepared frozen foods early because air-fry mode may cook them faster than package timing suggests; that advice is specific to that manual, not a rule for every model. Follow your own appliance’s directions and check for doneness before the package time is up.
2. Chicken pieces or tenders
Chicken is a straightforward main-dish option, whether you use pieces or tenders. Cook according to a recipe suited to your model and verify that the thickest part reaches 165°F with a food thermometer. Browning on the outside does not confirm that poultry is safely cooked.

3. Salmon or another fish fillet
Salmon is one fish option listed in KitchenAid’s air-fryer guidance. USDA FSIS recommends cooking fish to 145°F, checked with a food thermometer. Choose a recipe for the cut and thickness you have rather than relying on a universal time.
4. Shrimp
Shrimp can be another fast-cooking protein to consider. KitchenAid includes it among foods suitable for air frying, but the sources here do not establish a single cooking time for different shrimp sizes and appliances. Use a model-specific recipe and check the result closely.
5. Tofu
Air-fried tofu is a flexible option when you want a meatless protein. KitchenAid lists tofu as a possible air-fryer food. Pair it with vegetables or a grain, and use a recipe that matches your preferred texture; no particular crispness or cost advantage is guaranteed.

7. Zucchini
Zucchini appears in both Philips and KitchenAid air-fryer guidance. It can work as a simple side or as one component of a mixed meal. Cut it as directed in your chosen recipe so the pieces cook at a similar rate.
8. Peppers

10. Cauliflower
KitchenAid includes cauliflower among firm vegetables suited to air frying. Use it as a side or combine it with another dish. Follow recipe guidance on piece size and batch size so the vegetables are arranged appropriately for your appliance.

12. Frozen vegetables as sides or add-ins
Frozen chopped vegetables can serve as an air-fryer side or go into a larger meal; the American Diabetes Association includes them in an air-fryer recipe. USDA MyPlate also recommends adding frozen vegetables to dishes as a way to stretch recipes. That makes them a useful pantry or freezer option when you have them on hand, not proof that frozen vegetables always cost less than fresh ones.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make the routine easier without assuming a dollar saving
The appliance itself does not guarantee a lower bill. The sources do not establish a comparable dollar or energy saving for these particular foods. A more dependable budget-minded approach is to plan meals around ingredients you will use and make extra portions when it suits you.
- USDA MyPlate recommends freezing extra chopped vegetables, doubling recipes to freeze portions for later, and adding frozen vegetables to dishes.
- Choose a batch size that fits your air fryer. Overfilling can conflict with the arrangement and cooking instructions for a specific recipe.
- Use a recipe that matches your food, portion, and appliance. Philips and KitchenAid list suitable categories of foods, but those lists do not establish universal timing.
- For frozen prepared foods, check your own manual and package directions. Some air-fry settings may cook them faster than package timing suggests.
USDA MyPlate’s advice is about planning and making ingredients go further; it is not a quantified claim about savings from an air fryer. See USDA MyPlate’s meal-preparation guidance.

Use a thermometer for food safety
USDA FSIS advises: “Cook all air fried foods to a safe minimum internal temperature and measure with a food thermometer.” Appliance size and power affect cooking time, so a fixed number of minutes is not a substitute for checking temperature. Use the thermometer in the thickest appropriate area and follow the food and appliance instructions.
| Food | USDA FSIS safe minimum |
|---|---|
| Poultry | 165°F |
| Fish and shellfish | 145°F |
| Ground meat | 160°F |
| Whole cuts of beef, pork, veal, and lamb | 145°F, followed by a three-minute rest |
| Leftovers | 165°F when reheated |
Refrigerate cooked leftovers within two hours. See USDA FSIS air-fryer safety guidance and its safe minimum internal temperature chart for details.
Sources for the food ideas
Philips lists frozen food, meat and fish, zucchini, corn, and peppers among foods for its air fryer: Philips air-fryer food guidance. KitchenAid lists chicken, salmon, shrimp, tofu, steak, zucchini, cauliflower, and sweet potatoes: KitchenAid’s air-frying guide. The American Diabetes Association has air-fryer recipes featuring chicken, sweet-potato chips, and frozen chopped vegetables: Diabetes Food Hub recipes. The frozen-food timing caveat comes from one appliance manual dated 2024-08-13, so it should not be applied to all air fryers: manual PDF.
