Shrubs are long-lived woody plants that can give a landscape structure as well as seasonal flowers, foliage, berries, or bark. The eleven plants below are examples featured in Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) selections—not a universal ranking. The right choice depends on your climate, sun and wind exposure, soil and drainage, and the space available at maturity.
Before buying, check the plant label for mature height and spread, then confirm local growing guidance for the species or cultivar. A shrub that fits its site can provide lasting interest without repeated pruning just to hold it in place.

How to choose for your site
- Start with space. Compare the plant label’s mature height and spread with the room available. Allowing a shrub to reach its expected size can reduce the need to move it or prune it repeatedly to constrain it.
- Match conditions. Check sunlight, wind exposure, soil, and drainage against guidance for the exact species or cultivar. For instance, Ceanothus generally needs sun, shelter, and well-drained soil, while very wet soil is unsuitable for most Cotoneaster described in the RHS guidance.
- Choose the interest you want. Evergreen foliage can preserve structure in winter; other shrubs may be selected for flowers, foliage, or berries. Check when the chosen plant provides interest and whether it is evergreen or deciduous.
- Check local climate advice. RHS examples are not automatically recommendations for every country or growing zone. Consult a local nursery, extension service, or botanical garden for region-specific guidance before buying.
When and how to plant
Most shrubs are best planted from autumn through early spring, provided the ground is neither frozen nor waterlogged. Avoid planting in hot or dry weather. Container-grown shrubs can be planted at other times, but they need more aftercare; newly planted evergreen shrubs should not be allowed to dry out while establishing.
- Check the plant label. Confirm the identity, mature height and spread, and growing requirements before deciding on a location.
- Choose a suitable planting window. Aim for autumn through early spring when soil conditions allow. Avoid hot or dry weather.
- Allow for establishment. Pay particular attention to watering newly planted evergreens so they do not dry out as they establish.
RHS notes that shrubs are usually sold in containers, though some—particularly hedging plants—may be available bare-root. Its planting guidance is available in How to plant a shrub.
Pruning depends on the shrub
There is no single pruning date or severity that suits all eleven choices. Remove dead, diseased, or damaged shoots, then check guidance for the specific plant and its flowering pattern before shaping it. RHS notes that many larger evergreens need little regular pruning beyond removing unhealthy shoots, while some small lavenders and heathers benefit from annual pruning. Larger shoots may call for loppers or a saw rather than small hand pruners. See the RHS guide to pruning evergreen shrubs for plant-specific timing.
