The best patio heater depends on where people sit, how much area needs warmth, and whether a fuel line, propane tank, electrical outlet, or pellet supply is practical. These 11 options span portable propane towers, tabletop and directional heaters, pellet-burning designs, fire-pit tables, and electric infrared models. Testing claims below are attributed to the publications that made them: Popular Mechanics says it tested three of its recommendations in person, while other models in its roundup were assessed through research and customer reviews. Bob Vila reports testing 15 models in its 2025 research, though its published top-pick section names eight. This is a comparison of published picks, not a claim that all 11 were independently tested hands-on by one reviewer.

How to choose a patio heater

Match the heater to the seating area

A tabletop heater is intended for warmth close to a small table; it is not a substitute for a tower serving a larger seating zone. Directional heaters concentrate warmth toward a defined spot, while a mounted or hanging infrared heater can keep floor space clear. Fire-pit tables combine a heat source with a central gathering feature, but their footprint and placement need to fit the patio.

Choose a practical power source

  • Propane: Portable and convenient when there is no fixed gas line, but it requires a compatible cylinder and outdoor ventilation.
  • Natural gas: Usually depends on a fixed gas connection, so it is less flexible to reposition.
  • Electric: Infrared models need suitable power and, for mounted units, appropriate installation. Follow the model’s manual for electrical requirements.
  • Pellets: Pellet-burning models require fuel and may be heavy or cumbersome to move.

BTU and coverage figures are not guarantees of comfort. Wind, distance, placement, and the arrangement of the seating area all affect how warm a patio feels. Compare models by format and intended use, not by BTUs alone.

Which type suits your patio?

For warmth around a small table

Compare the Cuisinart tabletop model with the Hiland tabletop heater listed by This Old House. This Old House gives the Hiland a 9,500-BTU output and notes that short fuel duration can be a drawback. Neither tabletop format should be treated as a whole-patio solution; Bob Vila’s Cuisinart test describes its useful warmth as close to the table.

For flexible, freestanding heat

The Amazon Basics, FDW, and Pamapic models are propane towers. Their reported outputs vary, and the coverage figures are not directly interchangeable. Wheels can help with repositioning, but do not move a heater while it is hot or lit; follow its instructions for shutdown and handling.

For a fixed or overhead location

The Dr. Infrared DR-238 and EnerG+ hanging model are electric options, while the Briza Carbon Infrared Heater in This Old House’s guide uses an adjustable tripod and offers 900-, 1,200-, and 1,500-watt settings. Placement and power access are central to choosing among them. Confirm installation, outlet, and clearance requirements in the current manual.

For a pellet-burning option

The Solo Stove Tower uses a gravity-fed hopper, according to Popular Mechanics, and offers a distinct fuel format from propane or electric models. Its reported weight and limited portability make it a less obvious choice if the heater needs frequent repositioning.

Setup, placement, and safety

Fuel-burning heaters belong outdoors and must be used according to their exact manuals. Portable-heater guidance from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says to keep heaters at least three feet from drapes, furniture, bedding, and other combustibles. That is general portable-heater advice, not a replacement for a patio heater’s specific clearance instructions or local fire and building requirements.

  • CPSC advises plugging electric space heaters directly into a wall outlet rather than an extension cord or power strip. Check the patio heater manual for outdoor electrical and installation requirements.
  • Do not assume a covered patio is suitable for a fuel-burning heater. Confirm the model’s permitted location, ventilation needs, and clearances in its manual.

CPSC estimates portable heaters, including electric space heaters, were involved in an average of 1,600 fires annually, with an average of 70 deaths and 150 injuries per year, from 2020 through 2022. These are figures for portable heaters generally, not patio heaters alone.
