How to compare cooling mattresses
Look at the whole construction, not just the cover claim
Coil cores and ventilated materials can allow more air movement than a solid foam core. A breathable cover or moisture-wicking upper layer may contribute to comfort, but the materials beneath it matter too. Sleep Foundation describes the Helix Midnight Luxe as combining a breathable Tencel cover and gel-infused foams with pocketed coils. That construction is a feature, not a promise that every sleeper will feel cool on it.

A Homes & Gardens guide, for example, describes the Saatva Latex Hybrid as using open-cell Talalay latex over a coil core and reports a tester’s favorable experience in humid summer weather; it also notes limited edge support. Treat “cooling” materials as features to check, not proof
Gel, phase-change materials, proprietary fabrics, and cool-to-the-touch covers can be worth comparing, but the material name alone does not establish how a mattress will perform. Sleep Foundation’s gel-memory-foam explainer reports temperature-neutrality ratings ranging from fair to very good across models. Match firmness and support to your body and sleep position
A mattress that feels cooler but leaves you uncomfortable is not a good fit. Side sleepers may prioritize pressure relief at the shoulder and hip; back sleepers may have different support needs. The guide’s categories—such as side sleeping, pressure relief, spinal alignment, and back pain—offer starting points, not substitutes for checking whether the mattress’s feel and support suit you.
Balance airflow with motion and edge support
Couples may want both airflow and limited motion transfer, while people who sit or sleep near the edge should consider edge support. These qualities can vary among hybrids, so compare them alongside temperature-related features rather than assuming that coils guarantee a particular result. Homes & Gardens discusses motion transfer in hybrid testing and identifies limited edge support as a drawback of the Saatva Latex Hybrid.

What the testing behind the shortlist tells you
Sleep Foundation says it used thermal measurement tools to assess heat retention and put 30 of its strongest cooling candidates through additional testing. The site also states that it has rated more than 1,900 mattresses, draws on a team with more than 50 years of combined experience, and evaluated more than 100,000 user reviews. These are Sleep Foundation’s own figures and descriptions, not an external audit or a guarantee that the results predict an individual sleeper’s experience. A mattress can affect heat retention, but room temperature, bedding, and individual comfort also shape how warm you feel at night. If replacing a mattress is not the right next move, breathable sheets or a cooling topper or pad may be alternatives to investigate. A cooling pillow may also be relevant if heat is concentrated around your head. These accessories are categories to consider, not endorsements of a specific product.
