A heater that will not start, cannot warm the home, or behaves unusually may need attention. The signs below apply broadly to home heating systems, but causes differ among furnaces, heat pumps, boilers, and room heaters. Furnace examples are labeled; these symptoms are warnings, not diagnoses. A gas odor or carbon monoxide (CO) alarm requires emergency action, not routine troubleshooting.

10 signs your heater may not be working properly

1. The heater will not turn on

If the system does not start, check that the thermostat is set to heat and the temperature setting calls for heat. Check accessible power status and follow the user manual. If those checks do not resolve the problem, arrange professional diagnosis. Carrier lists thermostat settings and furnace power among basic checks: Carrier furnace troubleshooting.

2. The home does not get warm enough

A heater may run yet fail to bring rooms to the desired temperature, or some areas may remain colder than others. Airflow restrictions or equipment problems can contribute. If basic external checks do not restore adequate heat, have the system assessed rather than assuming one particular part has failed. See Carrier’s furnace repair guidance.

3. Airflow is weak

Weak airflow from registers can result from a dirty filter or obstructed vents. Check that vents are open and unobstructed. If checking or replacing a filter is permitted by your manual, use the exact size and type specified for your system; a generic filter may not be compatible. A filter change will not fix an ignition, combustion, blower, or electrical fault.

4. A furnace repeatedly starts and stops

Repeated starting and stopping, often called short cycling, can be associated with restricted airflow as well as control or mechanical problems. Check only accessible items such as the filter and unobstructed vents. If the cycling continues, arrange service. Do not open the furnace to investigate internal controls.

5. You hear new, loud, or unusual noises

Banging, grinding, squealing, or loud hissing are reasons to take notice. A new or persistent sound can indicate a problem that requires professional attention; its sound alone does not identify the cause. Do not open the equipment or adjust internal components. Trane identifies loud hissing or banging as requiring professional attention in its troubleshooting guidance.

  • Upgrade abs material: Upgrade abs material applied, which is more flame resident. The room heater with six feet lead cord and 2 prong connection has a long lasting life. The space heater for indoor use makes a noticeable difference and works well in small to medium rooms when positioned properly.

6. There is a persistent unusual odor

A persistent burning odor warrants attention. If you suspect a gas leak, stop troubleshooting: do not operate electrical switches or use the heater. Leave the building and contact the gas utility or emergency service from a safe location. Trane’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes ordinary equipment concerns from suspected gas odors that call for immediate safety action.

7. A fuel furnace’s flame or ignition looks abnormal

This sign applies only to fuel-burning furnaces where a flame is visible; it does not apply to electric heaters or every burner design. In its gas-furnace guidance, Trane describes a steady blue flame as expected and advises specialist help for a yellow or orange flickering flame. Do not attempt to adjust a burner or ignition system. See Trane furnace maintenance guidance.

8. The furnace blower does not operate normally

A furnace blower that does not run as expected can interfere with heat circulation and merits evaluation. This is a furnace-specific warning, not a diagnosis based on a fan setting or on how a heat pump behaves. Trane lists blower failure among furnace repair signs.

9. The furnace trips a breaker or will not shut off normally

A furnace that repeatedly trips a breaker or does not shut off normally needs professional evaluation. Do not keep resetting a breaker or attempt electrical repairs. Trane includes both conditions in its furnace repair signs.

10. A carbon monoxide alarm sounds

Treat a CO alarm as an emergency, not as a clue to investigate while inside. Go outside to fresh air, call emergency services or the fire department, and do not re-enter until responders say it is safe. If a malfunctioning appliance is identified as the source, do not operate it until trained personnel have serviced it. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says fuel-burning furnaces and room heaters can produce CO; its Carbon Monoxide Fact Sheet gives emergency guidance.

What you can safely check before arranging service

For a routine heating problem with no gas odor or CO alarm, limit checks to accessible items allowed by the owner’s manual. Carrier’s basic troubleshooting checklist includes:

  • Thermostat mode and temperature setting.
  • Accessible furnace power status.
  • Whether the filter is dirty; any replacement must match the system’s required size and type.
  • Whether vents are open and unobstructed.
  • Visible fuel availability, if applicable and safe to check.

If those checks do not resolve the symptom, or the issue involves combustion, wiring, ignition, a gas valve, or another internal component, stop and contact a qualified heating professional. Do not service internal parts unless qualified.

How urgent is it?

  • Emergency: A CO alarm or suspected gas leak. Leave the building and contact emergency services or the appropriate utility from a safe location. For CO alarms, follow CPSC’s instruction not to re-enter until responders permit it.
  • Prompt professional attention: A recurring breaker trip, abnormal furnace flame, persistent short cycling, blower failure, loud new noise, or a system that cannot heat adequately after safe external checks.
  • Safe external check first: A heater that will not start, weak airflow, or uneven heat may warrant checking thermostat settings, accessible power, filter condition, and unobstructed vents, provided there is no emergency warning and the manual permits the check.

Reduce carbon monoxide risk

CPSC recommends CO alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas, with monthly testing, in its 2026 winter safety guidance. Follow local requirements and each alarm’s instructions. An alarm is an added safeguard, not a substitute for proper appliance use, upkeep, or professional service. CPSC says more than 200 people in the United States die each year from CO produced by non-automotive consumer products; that figure is not specific to furnaces.
