For a frightening jack-o’-lantern, start with a strong silhouette: hollow or angled eyes, a mouth with a distinctive shape, and—if it suits the face—fangs or jagged teeth. These ten ideas adapt familiar scary-face features into designs you can sketch onto a pumpkin and tailor to its shape.

The hollow-eyed skull
Carve two large, dark eye sockets, a small nose opening, and a narrow row of teeth. The contrast between broad sockets and a tight mouth gives the face a skull-like look.

The stretched scream
Cut a tall oval mouth and place small, pinched eyes high above it. A few short marks inside the mouth can suggest teeth without crowding the opening.

The hungry monster
Carve an oversized open mouth low on the pumpkin. Set a mini pumpkin in front of it so the larger face appears to be swallowing it; keep the prop stable and clear of any flame.

The stitched-up grin
Make a long, simple mouth and add short cuts across it to suggest crude stitches. Leave enough solid pumpkin between the marks that the mouth does not become a fragile row of narrow strips.

Choose a design that fits your pumpkin
Before drawing, turn the pumpkin and look at its ridges, flatter areas, and natural asymmetry. Kent Fire and Rescue Service notes that surface lines and an unusual shape can be incorporated into a design. A ridge might divide the eyes, for example, while a lopsided outline can suit the crooked goblin or one-eyed watcher.
The table’s complexity and shape-fit notes are editorial estimates, not tested ratings. Use them to narrow your choices, then simplify any feature that would require a delicate cut on your particular pumpkin.

Transfer the face before you carve
A stencil can help keep the expression legible and make it easier to place features around ridges. BBC Blue Peter offers five free Halloween pumpkin stencils, including a scary face described as having fierce eyes and a jagged grin. Its activity instructions use a printed design, marked lines, carving, and a battery-powered tea light.
- Pick and simplify the design. Decide which features must remain recognizable, then remove small details that do not fit the pumpkin or your experience.
- Print or draw a template. Blue Peter’s stencil is one printable starting point. Another transfer approach described by D23 is to put graphite on the back of a printed template and trace its lines onto the pumpkin with a ballpoint pen.
- Check the placement. Secure the marked design on the pumpkin and make sure the eyes and mouth sit where you want them before cutting.
- Carve smaller details first. Disney’s Jack Skellington activity advises beginning with smaller detailed pieces. Use a template as a guide, but avoid cuts so close together that the remaining pumpkin is fragile.
Carve and light it safely
Kent Fire and Rescue Service recommends specialty pumpkin-carving tools rather than kitchen knives, using a template and tracing its lines, and cutting away from yourself. Specialty tools do not remove the risk of injury, so work carefully and keep your hands out of the cutting path. For illumination, Kent Fire and Rescue Service, Blue Peter, and Disney’s activity all point to battery-powered or LED lighting; Kent also mentions glowsticks as an alternative to a flame.
