You can make a kitchen greener without replacing everything in it. Start with habits that cut water use and keep food scraps out of the disposal; when an appliance actually needs replacing, compare its certified efficiency and operating costs. These recommendations draw on U.S. EPA and Department of Energy guidance, while composting rules and product availability vary by location.
1. Scrape dishes instead of pre-rinsing
Scrape food into compost or trash before loading the dishwasher rather than rinsing dishes under the tap. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends this approach as a way to avoid unnecessary water use. EPA WaterSense: Home Maintenance
2. Run full dishwasher loads
Wait until the dishwasher is full before running it, and skip an extra rinse cycle when the machine allows. Follow the appliance manual and choose a cycle appropriate to the dishes’ soil level; a single cycle setting is not right for every load. EPA WaterSense: Home Maintenance
3. Use a basin when washing dishes by hand
Plug the sink or use a wash basin rather than letting water run continuously while you wash. This simple change can reduce water going down the drain unused. EPA WaterSense: Start Saving

4. Compost scraps when you have an accepted route
EPA recommends composting food waste rather than sending it through a garbage disposal. The practical option depends on where you live: check whether your municipality or hauler collects food scraps, which materials it accepts, and how they must be prepared. If you compost at home, use a method suited to your space and follow local guidance.
A small food-scrap pail can make collection convenient, but it only stores scraps; it does not compost them. EPA WaterSense: Start Saving and EPA: Identifying Sustainable Food Service and Food Service Ware

5. Choose reusables you will actually use
Reusable kitchen items are a sensible choice when they are durable and you will use them repeatedly. EPA’s food-service guidance favors reusables where an effective reuse system is in place, but that does not mean one material is automatically the greener choice in every household. Consider how long an item will last, whether it will be used often, how it is cleaned, and what your local waste system accepts. EPA: Buying Green for Consumers and EPA: Identifying Sustainable Food Service and Food Service Ware
6. Treat “compostable” claims as conditional
A compostable label does not guarantee that an item belongs in your local compost stream. EPA advises using certified commercially compostable food-service ware only where a commercial composting program exists and accepts the specific product type. Ask your local hauler what it takes before putting labeled packaging in a collection bin; if it is not accepted, follow local disposal instructions. 8. Replace appliances when replacement is due
There is no need to discard a working appliance just because a newer one may be more efficient. When a dishwasher needs replacing, EPA advises choosing an ENERGY STAR certified model and comparing water use in gallons per cycle; all else being equal, fewer gallons per cycle means lower water use. Also check energy use, capacity, fit, and purchase price. EPA WaterSense: Home Maintenance
The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2021 Consumer Guide to Kitchen Appliances reported that ENERGY STAR certified dishwashers used 12% less energy than standard models and estimated about 3,870 gallons of water saved over the average 10-year lifetime of an ENERGY STAR certified dishwasher. These are the guide’s comparative and average-lifetime figures, not guaranteed savings for a particular current model or household. DOE Consumer Guide to Kitchen Appliances (2021)
9. Compare an appliance’s operating costs as well as its price
The purchase price is only part of an appliance’s cost. As the Department of Energy puts it, “Every appliance has two price tags: what you pay to purchase it, and what you pay for the energy and water it uses.” Compare the upfront cost with published energy and water use for the models you are considering; avoid assuming a particular payback period without household-specific usage and cost data. DOE Consumer Guide to Kitchen Appliances (2021)
The same 2021 DOE guide reported that ENERGY STAR certified refrigerators used 9% less energy than standard models. Treat that as the guide’s comparison, not a promise about every refrigerator currently for sale. DOE Consumer Guide to Kitchen Appliances (2021)

10. Repair, reuse, and check credible labels
Before buying something new, ask whether you can repair what you have, whether you need the item, and whether a used, rented, or reusable option would work. EPA cautions shoppers about vague product claims such as “environmentally friendly,” “eco safe,” and “green”; a label is more useful when it reflects defined criteria. EPA identifies programs including WaterSense for water efficiency and Safer Choice. Check that a certification is current and applies to the product category you are buying rather than relying on broad marketing language. EPA: Buying Green for Consumers
