A broken terracotta pot can become a tiered fairy garden, a mosaic feature, or part of a small container habitat. The best use depends on the shape of the pieces and whether the remaining pot can safely hold soil. Here are 10 ideas, including a step-by-step approach to the planted display.
What can I do with a broken terracotta pot?
Choose a use that suits what is still intact: a base that holds soil works for a miniature planting, while flatter shards can become mosaic material or accents in a habitat. These ideas range from documented garden uses to modest adaptations; they are creative options, not all proven horticultural techniques.
-
Make a tiered fairy garden
Set fragments inside the remaining pot to create ledges, then fill the levels with soil and small plants. The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources’ Broken Pot Fairy Garden example uses succulent cuttings, moss, rocks, pebbles, and a small fairy house.
-
Build a succulent cascade
Arrange shards as terraces and plant the levels with small succulents suited to the light and available soil depth. UCANR’s example uses succulent cuttings and layered pieces; the exact layout can be adapted to the fragments you have.

Make a miniature staircase
Use rectangular fragments as steps between planted tiers. This is a detail from the UCANR display, rather than a separate planting method.
-
Add a tiny focal point
Place a miniature house or another small garden detail among the plants. Keep it stable and leave enough room for the plants to grow.
-
Use the shards in a garden mosaic
Pottery pieces can be incorporated into mosaics on garden surfaces. Cornell Garden-Based Learning lists pottery among reusable mosaic materials and describes mosaics for garden containers and other features: Mosaic Making.

Mosaic a sound pot
Instead of planting in the broken vessel, use suitable shards to decorate an intact pot. The Royal Horticultural Society discusses decorating pots with mosaic tiles or pebbles and notes that terracotta’s absorbent surface affects how decoration is applied: Decorate a plant pot. Using broken terracotta as mosaic material is a practical adaptation of the RHS and Cornell guidance, not a recipe tested by either source. Check that any adhesive is suitable for terracotta and the intended indoor or outdoor location.

Add terracotta to a container habitat
The RHS recommends stones or broken terracotta on the surface of a sink habitat where butterflies can bask. Its Pots and container habitats guidance also describes other habitat features.
-
Try a miniature crevice-style display
The RHS describes miniature crevice gardens in troughs, with upright slate pieces and soil between them. Terracotta shards could be used as a visual adaptation, but the RHS guidance specifically describes slate; it does not establish terracotta as an equivalent growing method.

Use a large shard as a garden accent
Place a stable piece among stones and plants in a container habitat for a simple sculptural detail. This adapts the RHS habitat use of broken terracotta. Position it so sharp edges are not exposed where people or pets might touch them.
-
Save intact pieces for a later craft
Sort and keep shards with useful shapes for a future mosaic or garden feature rather than discarding every fragment. Cornell’s mosaic resource includes pottery among materials that can be reused.

How do I make a broken pot fairy garden?
A stable remaining vessel and fragments that can rest securely inside it are the essentials. A municipal fairy-garden activity sheet from Southwest Allen County Schools also suggests potting soil, small plants or succulents, and moss; UCANR’s example uses garden soil mixed with pumice and succulent cuttings. Select a planting mix and plants for your local conditions rather than assuming every plant suits every arrangement.

- All Purpose: Hand-mixable and fast-setting moldable adhesive for small emergency repairs that bonds to damp surfaces and can cure underwater
- Two-Part System: Consists of an epoxy resin putty and hardener putty to produce a hard, tough, permanent, and waterproof bond on a wide range of materials
- Fast Easy: Simply knead and apply putty to rebuild and bind and after 60 minutes can be sanded, drilled, and painted
- Resilient: Does not shrink and is resistant to water and most common solvents with high impact resistance that won’t crack when drilled
- Versatile: Molds into different shapes and bonds for sealing pipes, fixing leaks, repairing items and bonds to metal, masonry, brick, wood, glass, ceramic, rubber, fiberglass composite, and more
- Choose the base. Use a broken pot whose remaining base can hold soil, and place it on a stable surface.
- Arrange the tiers. Fit existing fragments inside the vessel to make ledges or levels. The Southwest Allen County Schools activity sheet describes arranging shards at different levels; UCANR’s example also uses arranged pieces with soil, rocks, and pebbles.
- Add soil and plants. Fill the levels with suitable potting mix and small plants chosen for the available light and soil depth.
- Finish the details. Add moss or pebbles to open spaces if you like, then place a miniature feature where it will stay secure.
- Check the finished display. Confirm that the arrangement is stable and that water can drain through the remaining vessel. Monitor moisture as you would for a small container planting.
What to know about drainage, watering, and winter
Do not put shards in a pot to improve drainage
Broken terracotta at the bottom of a container is not a drainage fix. The University of Maryland Extension’s container-growing guidance says shards, gravel, and rocks do not improve drainage. A drainage hole and suitable potting medium matter instead. As University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator Andrew Holsinger put it, “Proper drainage is just as important as the amount of water added to the container,” in 6 tips for watering container gardens.
Account for terracotta’s porosity
Clay is porous, so a terracotta planting can lose water more quickly than one in a less porous container. Illinois Extension also notes that water in pottery pores can expand when frozen and crack the pot. These properties can affect how often you check moisture and where you keep an outdoor display: Container Material Choices.
Handle broken pottery carefully
Use existing fragments where possible. If you choose to break a pot further, handle the pieces carefully and consider gloves and eye protection; Ideal Home recommends both for this task in 7 easy ways I’m reusing broken crockery and pots in my garden this summer. This is practical editorial advice, not a formal safety standard. Avoid leaving sharp edges exposed in places accessible to people or pets.
