The result is a formed component—not a solid block carved into shape. The Eames molded plywood chairs offer a well-documented example of how the process works and how its limits influenced a design.
How is molded plywood furniture made?
The basic idea is to bond veneer layers while they are held in a shaped form. Rather than bending a thick board or carving a solid piece, the maker builds a laminated panel whose layers follow the intended curve. With compound curves—curves running in more than one direction—the forming process has to shape the veneer across multiple axes.
Materials, adhesives, tooling and assembly vary by design. The Eames account below documents one specific approach; it is not a universal recipe for every molded plywood chair or furniture maker.
What is the Eames process?
The Eames Foundation describes the process as forming sheets of plywood while imposing compound curves. Charles Eames’s 1954 description, as reproduced by the Foundation, gives a more specific account: “The molded plywood chairs are molded from sheets of veneer between heated platens bonded with a thermosetting resin.”

In that account, the seat and back use five veneer sheets, while the legs and spine use nine. The Foundation also describes an impregnating resin finish cured against the platen. Those sheet counts and finish details refer to the Eames construction described in that source, not to molded plywood furniture generally.
From experimental molding to shaped veneer
The Foundation recounts that Charles and Ray Eames developed a homemade molding device called the Kazaam machine. Early trials reportedly used balloons filled with air from a bicycle pump. These details illustrate experimentation with ways to press veneer into shape; they are not a complete workshop procedure or a set of instructions for replicating the process.

Why does the Eames DCW have a separate seat and back?
DCW stands for Dining Chair Wood. The Eames Foundation says the chair was first made available to the public in 1946. The designers initially sought a single-piece shell with complex curves, but repeated splits were needed to make that form work. The final DCW uses separate seat and back components instead—a design choice shaped by the material’s behavior during forming.
The Eames group also shows how molded parts can be joined without relying on a rigid wood-to-wood connection. The Foundation describes rubber shock mounts between wooden sections; its historical technical account specifies mounts with metal inserts. These mounts reduce shock and provide strength, resilience and flexibility in the documented chair construction.

How do molded plywood chairs differ?
“Molded plywood chair” describes a construction approach, not one fixed shape or specification. For the Eames group, the DCW is a dining chair with separate seat and back pieces; the LCW is a representative lounge chair. The Foundation dates the LCW’s public introduction to 1946. The DCM (Dining Chair Metal) was developed concurrently with the LCW, according to the Foundation.
Manufacturer product sheets also document Eames dining-chair versions with wood bases and metal bases. A base option alone does not establish differences in comfort or performance; those require evidence about the specific chair and, for rankings, suitable testing.

What to check when choosing a molded plywood chair
Compare the construction and documentation of the particular chair rather than assuming all molded plywood furniture is made alike. Useful points to check include:
- Type and scale: distinguish dining chairs from lounge chairs, which serve different uses and have different proportions.
- Base: product documentation for Eames dining chairs shows both wood-base and metal-base versions.
- Formed components: check whether the seat, back and other shaped pieces are separate or made as a larger shell.
- Surface and upholstery: verify the veneer, finish and upholstery details for the exact model and configuration.
- Maker and provenance: the Eames Foundation identifies Herman Miller and Vitra as the only authorized manufacturers of Eames molded plywood chairs. That statement applies to Eames chairs, not the broader molded plywood category; a marketplace listing needs its own evidence before it can be described as authentic or authorized.
- Care and service information: consult the manufacturer’s documentation for the specific chair. The cited historical and product sources do not establish cleaning methods, refinishing advice, replacement shock mounts, repair products or parts availability.
Herman Miller’s product sheets document wood-base and metal-base dining-chair variants, but they do not establish current stock, pricing, warranties or regional purchase options. Check the relevant manufacturer’s current product information for those details.
