Zaha Hadid Architects’ Jinghe New City Culture & Art Centre is a planned cultural complex in Jinghe New City, Shaanxi Province, China. Selected through an international architecture competition, its river-inspired form is also intended to work as public infrastructure: elevated paths, courtyards and ramps would connect city districts with parks and the river.
What is the Jinghe New City Culture & Art Centre?
The project is a cultural centre designed by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) for Jinghe New City. Its name and location distinguish it from the practice’s other cultural projects in China. ZHA’s proposal won an international architecture competition.
The design takes inspiration from the Jinghe River and the valleys and terrain shaped by it. Rather than treating the building as a single isolated object, ZHA describes flowing volumes, layers and surfaces that meet courtyards and landscape. The ambition is to make the centre part of the city’s public realm as well as a destination for arts and culture.
How is the design meant to connect the building, city and river?
The planned site sits between commercial and residential districts to the north and parks and the river to the south. The design’s gently sloping ramps, elevated public routes, gardens and courtyards are intended to create a walkable connection across that setting and draw residents into the building.
